Heather:
I had fainted quite a few times in my life, but I never woke up with such a nagging headache.
I felt the headache even before opening my eyes, my head pounding like I had slept on a pile of granites.
When I eventually opened my eyes, I was greeted by the very strange scene in front of me. The room was painted a beautiful pastel color, the small lines and touches of red sitting around the room bringing out the whole decor even more.
When the marvel wore off, it was replaced by fear. How did I get here? Where was I?
I got up, my legs shaky as I walked towards the mirror.
I was dressed in a baggy T-shirt, my hair pouring to my shoulder.
My senses were finally awakening. The manly smell of the perfume that hugged the T-shirt hit me, making me take a deep whiff involuntarily.
With precise and slow steps, legs hitting the floor slowly as though I was scared to walk loudly, I went into what seemed to be the living room.
A huge picture stood in front of the room, standing out in the sea of black and gold that adorned the space.
A man. His features were so sharp and so irresistibly stunning that I could not help but marvel at how handsome he was.
And also just how familiar. I rummaged through my brain, nitpicking at the people I had met in my life, trying to find the particular face I was looking for.
And then I finally remembered him. The sheer cruelty of Mother Nature brought me to the house of the older brother of the man who cheated on me yesterday.
I swallowed, still taking a few steps forward.
The whole house was beautiful and reeked of wealth and affluence. Every single spot had either an exotic painting or an ancient vase.
He was rich. That much was well known.
I was about to pass the wide-open doors when I heard his voice coming from inside the room
" Let them name their price. 15 million? 30 million? I just want a woman that can act as my wife for a few months" he said.
Every single pain I felt at that moment seemed to numb as I heard the amount he just mentioned as though it was a minor amount to him.
15 million was more than enough to take care of the loan shark. I could even use part of it to pay for my younger sister Amila's schooling.
I could get a small little house for my mother and then she could stay in the city with me.
I could even get my exhibition spot. I could finally do well in life.
Not thinking that I was still dressed in that flimsy short shirt and the fact that I was interrupting his conversation, I burst into the door, looking at him.
“I will marry you, Christian.” My voice was loud and not trembling, my demeanor palpable and my eyes not leaving him.
He looked at me the same way he’s always looked at me, impassively.
“What are you talking about, Heather?” He questioned.
“You need me and I need you. I can marry you.” I said to him,
Even though he tried to hide it, I could see the shock on his face before it became completely covered with a stoic expression.
" Evans, I would have to call you back." He said, dropping the phone and finally focusing all his attention on me.
" You were listening to my conversation," he said.
It was more of a statement than a question.
I lowered my eyes down, suddenly feeling embarrassed of myself.
" I'm sorry, I was passing by and I heard you talking. I just...I just wanted to ask if I could. It's fine if you don't want me to "I said to him, face-palming internally at how quickly I talked, stumbling over my words as I tried to get it all out.
" I never said you couldn't," he said. His voice was incredibly cool, his intense gaze making me bury my eyes on the floor.
" Okay....then how do I...." I was talking but he stopped me.
" Do you know what you are saying? Do you understand what you are trying to get into?" He asked me and I nodded again.
" You want a wife for a few months and you are willing to pay for it. I'm willing to be that wife to you" I said to him, my voice so strong that even I thought I had gone mad.
His eyes glazed as he thought for a while, his hands tapping his knees anxiously.
" I want a wife very soon. If you agree to it then we will have to go to court tomorrow." He said to me,
Now it was my turn to think. Was I sure I wanted to do this? He was the brother of the man who cheated on me. For all I knew he could be worse than his brother.
I sighed. The loan sharks, my art exhibition. I bit down on my tongue as I finally answered him.
" That is fine by me," I said to him, trying to hide the fact that my heart was already drumming in my chest.
" What about my brother?" He asked.
I knew what he wanted to find out. He knew I was still with that douchebag.
I remembered him on the bed, my best friend in his arms as he told me he never wanted me.
Pain coursed through my body as I tried to shake the thought out.
" We have been over for a long time," I said to him.
He looked surprised, almost as if he wanted to ask what happened.
But he didn't.
" That is fine then. You should go take a bath and get dressed. I will call my lawyer and he will be here in a few hours to meet you and talk about the terms with you" he said.
I nodded, turning on my heels and half-dashing out of there.
I could finally feel the air rush into my lungs as though I had been suffocated before and just finally had the luxury of breathing again.
I went back into the room I had come out from and a woman was there, the outfit I had on the day before now resting in her arms as she looked at me.
She was an older woman with a friendly eye and smiling lips.
" I came in to see you were gone. I nearly had a fright until I heard your voice coming from the room down the hallway.
How do you feel now?" She asked me.
I smiled shyly as I went to take the clothes out of her hands gratefully.
" I feel much better now thank you. How did I get here?" I asked her.
" Mr Lawson brought you last night. I changed you and put you here to rest" she said.
I nearly sighed in relief. Thank goodness she had been the one to change me.
" Thank you. Very much" I said to her.
" You are welcome. You should get dressed and come down for breakfast. I'm nearly done in the kitchen" she said.
I shook my head enthusiastically as I got into the shower to take a bath.
I had nothing to lose. Absolutely nothing. If everything goes well, I will be able to pay off the loan sharks before I know it and then I will have my art studio. I had nothing to lose.
