Chapter 4

345 Words
Chapter 4 When my brother, Marcos Lane, saw me for the first time, he treated me with cold disdain. When he was in a bad mood, he would even speak harshly to me. But my parents acted as though they didn't notice, never offering any advice or comfort. On ordinary days, when they saw me at home, they were polite, but there wasn't a trace of emotion in their eyes. I felt like a guest in their house, or even worse, like a stranger. They didn't limit my spending, nor did they restrict my activities, but there was no communication between us. I knew, deep down, that they didn't love me. Although I had once been an orphan, I had long since understood what love truly was. For my family, it seemed that simply finding me was enough to fulfill their duty. I had thought they had found me for the sake of the Lane family's reputation, until a month ago when I discovered I had a younger sister, Grace Lane. Grace's health was poor, and she had been receiving treatment abroad for years, so I hadn't met her during my first year back with the Lane family. A month ago, my parents handed me a file. "Grace needs a bone marrow transplant, and none of us are a match. We hope you can go to the hospital for a check-up. If you're a match, please help save your sister." Along with the file, they handed me a document about Mr. Miles Harrison, the young master of the Harrison family. "If you agree to this, he'll be your fiancé, no matter how the match turns out. The Harrison family is one of the most powerful in Ardenia. Marrying Miles means your future is secure." That day, I realized two things. First, I was brought back to the Lane family to serve as a bone marrow donor for a sister I had never met. Second, they were using my marriage as a reward to get me to agree, seeing it as a deal I couldn't refuse.
