The storm refused to die.
Rain crashed against the walls of Greymark Keep throughout the night while thunder rolled endlessly across the mountains. Torches flickered along the fortress halls, throwing restless shadows against the ancient stone. Soldiers hurried through the corridors carrying weapons, armor, and messages. The entire keep felt tense, as if everyone sensed something terrible approaching.
Kael stood alone inside his chamber, staring at the crystal pendant resting in his palm.
The pendant glowed softly.
Blue.
Dark.
Blue again.
Every pulse sent warmth through his fingers.
He had tried sleeping, but each time he closed his eyes, strange visions appeared.
A silver city.
Burning towers.
A throne surrounded by darkness.
And always the same whisper calling his name.
"Kael..."
He clenched the pendant tightly.
The whisper faded.
A knock sounded at the door.
Before Kael answered, Lyra stepped inside carrying a lantern.
Her dark cloak was soaked from the rain, and strands of wet black hair clung to her face.
"You look awful," she said.
Kael leaned against the wall. "I could say the same thing to you."
"You were shouting in your sleep again."
Kael frowned. "What was I saying?"
"Mostly things that didn't make sense. But you kept repeating one word."
"What word?"
Lyra hesitated.
"Avinmor."
The room became silent except for the storm outside.
Kael slipped the pendant beneath his shirt.
"You've heard that name before," he said carefully.
Lyra walked closer.
"My father spent half his life searching for it."
Kael looked surprised.
"I thought your father died years ago."
"He did. But before he died, he left behind journals. Maps. Stories." She lowered her voice. "He believed Avinmor wasn't just a legend."
Kael sat on the edge of the bed.
"The old kingdom that disappeared?"
Lyra nodded.
"According to the stories, Avinmor was once the greatest city in the world. The Starborn Kings ruled there using powers no kingdom possesses today."
"Magic?"
"Maybe. Or something even older."
She reached into her cloak and removed a folded parchment.
"Look at this."
Kael unfolded the parchment carefully.
A drawing of a crystal pendant covered the page.
His pendant.
Exactly the same.
Below the drawing were faded words written in a strange language.
"Where did this come from?" Kael asked.
"One of my father's journals. He found it near the eastern mountains years ago."
Kael stared at the image.
"So this pendant belonged to Avinmor?"
"I think it leads there."
Before Kael could respond, heavy footsteps echoed through the corridor.
The chamber door burst open.
Captain Dren entered quickly.
Rain dripped from his armor.
His expression was grim.
"Both of you," he said. "Come with me. Now."
Minutes later, Kael and Lyra followed Dren through Greymark Keep.
The fortress no longer felt like home.
Archers lined the walls.
Blacksmiths hammered weapons deep into the night.
Messengers sprinted between towers while guards tightened defenses around the gates.
Something serious had happened.
When they entered the war chamber, King Aldric stood beside a massive map table surrounded by generals.
The old king looked exhausted.
Yet his sharp gray eyes immediately focused on Kael.
"Close the doors," Aldric ordered.
The heavy doors slammed shut behind them.
A tense silence followed.
Finally, the king spoke.
"Scouts returned an hour ago."
One of the generals pointed toward the southern border marked on the map.
"The Ashen Guard crossed the border before dawn."
Kael felt cold.
The Ashen Guard.
The emperor's elite soldiers.
Feared across every kingdom.
Wherever they marched, entire cities disappeared.
"How far away are they?" Lyra asked.
"Less than a day's ride," Dren answered.
Kael exchanged a glance with Lyra.
They both understood immediately.
The Ashen Guard was searching for the pendant.
King Aldric stepped forward slowly.
"There is no more time for secrets," he said.
He motioned toward an elderly scholar standing near the shadows.
Kael recognized him.
Eldrin.
The royal historian.
The old man carried a thick leather book beneath one arm.
"Long before our kingdoms existed," Eldrin began, "the world was ruled by the realm of Avinmor."
He opened the book.
Ancient drawings filled the pages.
Silver towers.
Massive armies.
Glowing crystals.
"The Starborn Kings controlled powerful relics created from celestial crystals hidden beneath the earth," Eldrin continued. "Those relics brought prosperity and knowledge to Avinmor. But eventually they also brought war."
Kael listened carefully.
"A terrible conflict destroyed the kingdom centuries ago," Eldrin said. "The city vanished, and the surviving relics were scattered across the world."
The old man looked directly at Kael.
"Your pendant is one of those relics."
The chamber fell silent.
Kael touched the crystal beneath his shirt.
"What does it do?" he asked.
No one answered immediately.
Finally, Eldrin spoke again.
"Legends claim the pendant reveals the path to the Heart of Avinmor."
One of the generals frowned.
"What exactly is the Heart?"
Eldrin closed the book slowly.
"A weapon powerful enough to destroy kingdoms."
Uneasy murmurs spread through the chamber.
King Aldric rested both hands on the table.
"If the emperor reaches it first, every kingdom in the north will fall under his rule."
Kael swallowed hard.
"So what happens now?"
The king pointed toward the eastern mountains.
"You leave before sunrise."
Lyra blinked.
"You want us to search for Avinmor?"
"You are the only ones who can find it before the Ashen Guard seals the mountain passes."
Captain Dren crossed his arms.
"I'll lead soldiers with them."
"No," the king said immediately. "A large force would attract attention. Kael and Lyra travel alone. Faster. Quieter."
Kael stepped forward.
"Your Majesty, I don't even know how to use this pendant."
Aldric's expression softened.
"Perhaps the pendant will teach you."
The storm finally weakened shortly before dawn.
Gray light spread across the mountains while stable hands prepared horses in the courtyard below.
Cold wind swept through Greymark Keep.
Kael tightened the straps on his travel pack while Lyra checked her daggers.
Captain Dren approached carrying a wrapped bundle.
"Take this," he said.
Kael unwrapped the cloth.
Inside rested a sword.
The silver blade was old but beautifully crafted.
Strange symbols were engraved along the steel.
"Whose sword is this?" Kael asked.
Dren hesitated.
"Your father's."
Kael stared at him.
"My father was a blacksmith."
"Not only a blacksmith," Dren replied quietly.
Questions filled Kael's mind, but Dren offered no further explanation.
The fortress gates slowly opened.
Beyond them stretched a narrow mountain road disappearing into thick mist.
Kael mounted his horse.
Lyra rode beside him.
Without another word, they left Greymark Keep behind.
The journey east grew colder with every mile.
Tall mountains surrounded the road while dark forests blocked most of the sunlight.
The deeper they traveled, the quieter the world became.
No birds sang.
No animals moved.
Only the wind whispered through the trees.
As evening approached, Kael noticed the pendant growing warmer.
The blue glow beneath his shirt brightened.
Then he heard it.
A faint voice carried through the forest.
"Kael..."
He immediately pulled his horse to a stop.
Lyra turned toward him.
"What is it?"
"Did you hear that?"
"Hear what?"
Kael listened carefully.
Silence.
Then the whisper returned.
"This way..."
The pendant pulsed rapidly.
Kael slowly looked toward a narrow canyon hidden between the cliffs.
"The voice is coming from there," he said.
Lyra studied the canyon uneasily.
"That wasn't on the map."
Kael dismounted.
The moment his boots touched the ground, the pendant flared with brilliant blue light.
A deep rumbling shook the canyon.
Dust fell from the cliffs.
Then enormous stone doors hidden within the mountain slowly began to open.
Kael stepped backward in shock.
Cold air poured from the darkness beyond the doors.
Lyra stared at the entrance.
"We found it," she whispered.
The Whispering Ruins.
Together, they entered the mountain.
The doors groaned shut behind them.
Darkness swallowed the outside world.
Lyra lit a torch.
Orange firelight revealed massive stone pillars stretching high into the darkness above.
Ancient statues lined the corridor.
Each statue depicted armored kings wearing crowns shaped like stars.
Kael felt uneasy beneath their frozen gaze.
The deeper they walked, the stranger the ruins became.
Blue crystals glowed faintly inside the walls.
Broken machines covered in dust filled abandoned chambers.
Ancient carvings spread across the stone floors.
Kael paused beside one wall.
The carvings showed a story.
He saw the Starborn Kings raising glowing crystals toward the sky.
Then armies marching.
Cities burning.
Darkness spreading across the world.
"Whatever destroyed this place," Kael whispered, "it wasn't natural."
A sudden metallic sound echoed through the corridor.
Clang.
Kael and Lyra froze.
Someone else was inside the ruins.
They moved carefully through the shadows.
Moments later, a figure suddenly burst around the corner.
A boy.
Young.
Dirty.
Terrified.
He nearly crashed into them before stopping abruptly.
"Wait!" the stranger gasped. "Don't kill me!"
Lyra immediately raised one of her daggers.
"Who are you?"
"Finn," the boy answered quickly. "And if you want to stay alive, you need to leave right now."
A deep roar thundered through the ruins.
The sound shook the floor beneath them.
Finn's face turned pale.
"Too late," he whispered.
Something moved inside the darkness beyond the corridor.
Massive claws scraped against stone.
Then glowing blue eyes appeared.
The creature slowly stepped into the torchlight.
It resembled a wolf, but far larger.
Black scales covered its body instead of fur.
Ancient symbols glowed along its skull.
The beast snarled.
Rows of razor-sharp teeth gleamed in the darkness.
"Run!" Finn shouted.
The creature lunged.
Kael barely raised his sword in time.
The impact hurled him across the corridor.
Pain exploded through his shoulder.
Lyra threw a dagger.
The blade struck the creature's neck.
It roared angrily but kept advancing.
Kael scrambled to his feet.
The pendant suddenly burned against his chest.
Blue light erupted from the crystal.
The beast froze.
Its glowing eyes locked onto the pendant.
For one strange moment, the creature looked frightened.
Then it retreated into the shadows with a furious growl.
Silence returned.
Kael breathed heavily.
Finn stared at the pendant.
"You carry a Starborn relic," he whispered.
Lyra lowered her dagger slightly.
"How do you know about these creatures?"
Finn swallowed nervously.
"Because I've been trapped down here for three days."
They followed Finn into a small chamber deeper inside the ruins.
A weak fire burned near the wall.
Broken crates and old blankets were scattered across the floor.
Finn devoured bread from Lyra's pack while Kael studied him carefully.
"So why were you really here?" Lyra asked.
Finn looked embarrassed.
"Treasure hunting."
Lyra rolled her eyes.
"Of course."
Finn reached into his satchel and removed a silver object.
A key.
Strange glowing symbols covered its surface.
The moment Kael's pendant came near it, both relics began glowing.
Finn noticed immediately.
"I found the key near a lower chamber," he explained. "There's a massive door down there. I think it hides something important."
"The Heart of Avinmor," Kael said quietly.
Finn looked surprised.
"You've heard of it?"
"Enough to know we don't want the emperor finding it first."
Another distant roar echoed through the ruins.
The guardian was still hunting them.
Lyra stood quickly.
"Then we move now."
Together, the three of them descended deeper into the ancient city.
The lower ruins were enormous.
Massive bridges crossed endless chasms glowing with blue mist.
Ancient towers stretched high above them beneath the mountain.
Everywhere Kael looked, crystals pulsed within the walls like veins of living light.
The pendant grew brighter with every step.
Finally, they reached an enormous chamber.
Two gigantic silver doors stood at the far end.
At the center of the doors rested a circular lock.
Exactly the size of Finn's key.
The air hummed with strange energy.
Kael stepped closer.
Then the whispers returned.
Louder than before.
"The heir returns..."
"The light awakens..."
"Avinmor remembers..."
Kael froze.
"Do you hear that?"
Lyra frowned.
"Hear what?"
The whispers vanished.
Before Kael could answer, heavy footsteps echoed through the chamber.
Metal boots.
Dozens of them.
Torches suddenly flared across the upper bridges.
Black-armored soldiers emerged from the shadows.
Ashen Guard.
At their center stood a tall man wearing dark silver armor and a crimson cloak.
A scar crossed his pale face from eye to jaw.
His cold gray eyes focused directly on Kael.
"Well," the man said calmly, "that saved us quite a bit of searching."
Lyra instantly drew both daggers.
Finn cursed under his breath.
The scarred man slowly descended the stone steps.
"I am Commander Varos," he announced. "By order of the emperor, surrender the pendant."
Kael tightened his grip on the sword.
"No."
Varos sighed.
"I hoped you would choose the easier path."
He raised one hand.
The Ashen Guard soldiers lifted crossbows.
Dozens of arrows aimed directly at them.
Finn whispered nervously, "Please tell me one of you has a plan."
Lyra glanced toward the silver doors.
"Maybe."
Without warning, she grabbed Finn's key and sprinted toward the lock.
"Stop her!" Varos shouted.
Arrows flew.
Kael charged forward.
The first soldier swung a sword toward him.
Kael blocked awkwardly.
The impact nearly knocked the blade from his hands.
Another soldier attacked immediately.
Kael stumbled backward.
He wasn't trained for battles like this.
Then the pendant flared brightly.
Suddenly Kael moved faster.
His reflexes sharpened.
Blue energy shimmered along the sword.
He deflected another strike and pushed the soldier backward.
Even the Ashen Guard looked surprised.
Meanwhile, Lyra reached the silver doors.
She slammed the key into the lock.
Nothing happened.
"Come on," she muttered.
Varos smiled coldly.
"The door requires both relics."
Kael realized instantly what he meant.
The pendant.
Commander Varos stepped toward him slowly.
Unlike the other soldiers, he carried only a long black blade.
"You don't understand what you've found," Varos said.
"Then explain it," Kael snapped.
"The Heart of Avinmor can reshape the world," Varos replied. "The emperor intends to unite the kingdoms forever."
"By conquering them," Lyra shouted.
Varos ignored her.
"Hand over the pendant, and you live."
Kael looked around.
Ashen Guard soldiers surrounded them completely.
No escape remained.
Then a monstrous roar exploded through the chamber.
The guardian had returned.
But this time it wasn't alone.
More glowing eyes appeared inside the darkness.
Five.
Ten.
An entire pack.
The creatures charged from the tunnels.
Chaos erupted instantly.
Guardians slammed into soldiers with terrifying speed.
Crossbows fired wildly.
Screams echoed through the ruins.
Commander Varos shouted orders, but panic spread among his men.
Lyra seized the opportunity.
"Kael! The pendant!"
Kael sprinted toward the doors.
A guardian leaped directly at him.
He raised the pendant instinctively.
A burst of blue light exploded outward.
The creature crashed backward violently.
The entire chamber shook.
Kael reached the silver doors beside Lyra.
"What do I do?"
"Press the pendant against the lock!"
Kael slammed the glowing crystal into the center of the doors.
For one heartbeat, nothing happened.
Then brilliant blue light erupted across the silver surface.
Ancient symbols ignited.
Massive gears rumbled deep beneath the floor.
The gigantic doors slowly began opening.
A blinding white light poured from the chamber beyond.
Every guardian suddenly stopped fighting.
Every soldier froze.
Even the whispers vanished.
The ruins seemed to hold their breath.
Commander Varos stared at the opening in horror.
"No..."
The doors opened wider.
Another powerful shockwave burst from the chamber.
Kael crashed against the floor.
The pendant burned like fire against his chest.
Through the blinding light, Kael saw a figure standing inside the chamber.
Tall.
Wrapped in silver armor covered with glowing symbols.
Its face hidden behind a white stone mask.
The figure slowly lifted its head.
And looked directly at Kael.
"At last," a voice echoed through the ruins.
The words were not spoken aloud.
Kael felt them inside his mind.
Ancient.
Powerful.
"The heir of Avinmor has returned."
The light swallowed the chamber.
And darkness consumed everything.
