Arc tried to move on from the day he collapsed. He told himself it was just another episode, nothing worth remembering. She was just a stranger who happened to help, he thought. I shouldnโ€™t hold on to that moment. But Darcyโ€™s face lingered in his memory. A few days later, Arc spotted her walking across the campus courtyard. She carried her books close to her chest, her steps quick, her gaze fixed straight ahead. He hesitated, then called out, โ€œDarcy, tama ba?โ€ She stopped, startled, then gave a small nod. โ€œYes. Youโ€™reโ€ฆ Arc, right?โ€ Arc smiled faintly. โ€œOo. Salamat ulit sa ginawa mo. Iโ€™ve been trying to forget that day, butโ€ฆ itโ€™s hard.โ€ Darcy shifted, adjusting the books in her arms. โ€œForget it. It was nothing. I just happened to be there.โ€ Arc tilted his head, studying her expression. โ€œStill, you helped me. Hindi ko makakalimutan.โ€ Darcy gave a quick, awkward smile. โ€œWellโ€ฆ youโ€™re fine now. Thatโ€™s what matters.โ€ There was a pause, the kind that stretched too long. Arc tried to fill it. โ€œDo you usually study at the library? Nakita na kita doon minsan.โ€ Darcy nodded briefly. โ€œYes. I spend most of my time there.โ€ Arc chuckled softly. โ€œFigures. You look serious all the time.โ€ Darcy looked down, her voice quiet. โ€œMaybe.โ€ Arc wanted to ask more, but Darcyโ€™s body language was clear โ€” she was already inching away, her grip on her books tightening. โ€œAnyway,โ€ she said quickly, โ€œI should go. I haveโ€ฆ things to finish.โ€ Arc gave a small smile, hiding his disappointment. โ€œAlright. Ingat ka.โ€ Darcy nodded again, almost too fast, before walking off. Her steps were brisk, her shoulders tense, as if she couldnโ€™t leave the moment quickly enough. Arc watched her disappear into the crowd, sighing. โ€œShe saved me, but she doesnโ€™t even want to talk. Awkward, butโ€ฆ maybe thatโ€™s just who she is.โ€ Darcy, meanwhile, whispered to herself as she walked. โ€œKeep your distance, Darcy. Just keep your distance.โ€ She didnโ€™t want to think about Arcโ€™s smile, or the way his voice carried gratitude. She wanted to believe it was nothing just a passing encounter. Yet the awkwardness of their exchange lingered in her chest, like a tide she couldnโ€™t quite push away.
