Arc tried to move on from the day he collapsed. He told himself it was just another episode, nothing worth remembering. She was just a stranger who happened to help, he thought. I shouldnโt hold on to that moment.
But Darcyโs face lingered in his memory.
A few days later, Arc spotted her walking across the campus courtyard. She carried her books close to her chest, her steps quick, her gaze fixed straight ahead. He hesitated, then called out, โDarcy, tama ba?โ
She stopped, startled, then gave a small nod. โYes. Youโreโฆ Arc, right?โ
Arc smiled faintly. โOo. Salamat ulit sa ginawa mo. Iโve been trying to forget that day, butโฆ itโs hard.โ
Darcy shifted, adjusting the books in her arms. โForget it. It was nothing. I just happened to be there.โ
Arc tilted his head, studying her expression. โStill, you helped me. Hindi ko makakalimutan.โ
Darcy gave a quick, awkward smile. โWellโฆ youโre fine now. Thatโs what matters.โ
There was a pause, the kind that stretched too long. Arc tried to fill it. โDo you usually study at the library? Nakita na kita doon minsan.โ
Darcy nodded briefly. โYes. I spend most of my time there.โ
Arc chuckled softly. โFigures. You look serious all the time.โ
Darcy looked down, her voice quiet. โMaybe.โ
Arc wanted to ask more, but Darcyโs body language was clear โ she was already inching away, her grip on her books tightening.
โAnyway,โ she said quickly, โI should go. I haveโฆ things to finish.โ
Arc gave a small smile, hiding his disappointment. โAlright. Ingat ka.โ
Darcy nodded again, almost too fast, before walking off. Her steps were brisk, her shoulders tense, as if she couldnโt leave the moment quickly enough.
Arc watched her disappear into the crowd, sighing. โShe saved me, but she doesnโt even want to talk. Awkward, butโฆ maybe thatโs just who she is.โ
Darcy, meanwhile, whispered to herself as she walked. โKeep your distance, Darcy. Just keep your distance.โ She didnโt want to think about Arcโs smile, or the way his voice carried gratitude. She wanted to believe it was nothing just a passing encounter.
Yet the awkwardness of their exchange lingered in her chest, like a tide she couldnโt quite push away.
