A call from the past

The annoying clock woke me, my head blasting. “Fuckity f**k, what have I done to myself?” I silenced the beeping taking a peep at the time. “s**t !! s**t!!,. I'm going to be late.” I stood up from the bed, ran to the bathroom, took a quick shower, a certain blue eyes haunting my every thought as I got dressed. I blocked the thought. “Reyna, you don't need this now” I scolded myself. Taking the Tylenol in my cabinet and swallowing it with a cup of coffee. I ran out of my house and hailed a cab. Dras Oasis Corp was 20 minutes away from my apartment, I worked as a junior data analyst. I hated my department boss. He is a bully and takes credit for jobs he didn't do. Rushing into the tall skyscraper, greeting the security, “Good morning Orlando” he waved “ morning Miss Sartori” I rushed to the elevator, pressing the button for the 23rd floor, where my department was located. As the doors opened, I saw my boss, Mr. Johnson, standing by the water cooler, sipping his coffee and chatting with my coworker, Karen. "Good morning, Reyna," he said, his voice dripping with venom. "Nice of you to join us. I see you're running a bit behind schedule." I forced a smile, trying to hide my hangover. "Good morning, Mr. Johnson. Sorry about that, traffic was a nightmare." He raised an eyebrow. "Traffic? You live 20 minutes away from here. You should have left earlier." I bit my tongue, not wanting to get into an argument with him. "Yes, sir. It won't happen again." As I walked to my desk, Karen gave me a sympathetic look. "Rough night?" she whispered. I nodded, taking a seat and booting up my computer. "You have no idea." The day dragged on, with Mr. Johnson breathing down my neck, making snide comments about my work. I tried to focus, but my head was still pounding, and all I could think about was Draven and our conversation the night before. Everytime I thought of him, I had to squeeze my legs to contain how wet I was getting. It was a disaster. At lunchtime, I met up with Enzo, who was waiting for me outside the building. "Girl, how are you feeling?" he asked, eyeing my pale complexion. "I'm dying," I replied, taking a sip of my coffee. "But I need to know, what happened after you left me at the bar?" Enzo grinned mischievously. "Let's just say I had a very good night. But I want to know about you and Mr. Blue Eyes. What happened?" I blushed, feeling a flutter in my chest. "We talked, had some drinks. He's really nice, Enzo." Enzo's eyes widened. "Nice? That's it? Girl, you need to spill the tea." I laughed, feeling a little better. "Maybe later, okay?” Enzo pouted, but let it go. "Fine, but you owe me a detailed gist later. Now, let's get some food, I'm starving!" We grabbed lunch at a nearby café, and I managed to forget about my hangover and Mr. Johnson's annoying comments for a while. We were almost done eating when Enzo asked, "So, are you going to see Mr. Blue Eyes again?" I shrugged, "Nah, I doubt that. We didn't get each other's number besides I'm not ready.” Enzo raised an eyebrow. "Not ready? Girl, you need to get back out there. And besides, he's hot. I could tap that if he lets me. You should totally go for it if you meet him again” I shrugged again, sighing deeply “that's if we meet again.” He was a gentle man. And I'm not ready to give my girl candy.” After lunch, I headed back to the office, feeling a little more energised. The rest of the day flew by, and before I knew it, it was time to head home. As I was packing up my things, Karen came over and whispered, "Hey, Reyna, I heard Mr. Johnson is planning to give you a hard time tomorrow. Something about your report not being up to par." I rolled my eyes. "Great, just what I need." “…and”, she continued, "I heard the boss asin the owner will be resuming work here tomorrow.” “What!??How is that possible? I thought he is based in Italy, what changed?” I was beyond shocked. “I heard the man is a walking wet dream, no girlfriend just flings” Karen said. I looked at Karen, “you’ve got no filter going lady. Let's just go home and get ready for tomorrow” As I left the office, I felt so uneasy. Mr. Johnson was already a nightmare, and now the owner, the infamous Dras Oasis, was returning? Sure I've heard rumours about him, how he was ruthless in business and had a reputation for being a ladies' man. I hailed a cab and headed home, my mind occupied with thoughts of the next day. As I walked into my apartment, I saw my phone flashing with a text from Sebastian. “Hi baby, I'm so sorry for what I did to you. Can we meet and talk at our favourite restaurant” My heartbeat sped up in anger as I read the message. “Sebastian has the guts to text me, the nerve of that bastard” I fumed. I typed out a response, my fingers trembling with anger "You backstabbing two-timing wanker, don't text me, don't call me EVER!!" With that, I sent the message and texted Enzo, “would you be a dear and come over to my place now, before I really commit murder. Sebastian texted me.” Enzo arrived at my apartment 20 minutes later, looking like a concerned mother hen. "Girl, what's going on? You sounded like you were about to kill someone over the phone." I handed him my phone, showing him the text from Sebastian. Enzo's eyes widened in shock. "That bastard! I'll kill him for you, Rey." I laughed, feeling a bit better with Enzo by my side. "No need, Enzo. I just need your company and a drink... or three." Enzo nodded and headed to my kitchen to pour us some wine. As we sat on the couch, sipping our drinks and venting about our exes. Just as we were getting comfortable, my phone buzzed again. This time, it was my mom. I hadn't seen the woman in five years since I left Italy. I read the message. “ When am I going to see my only child?” I groaned, looking at Enzo, “it's my mother.” He scoffed, “What does she want this time?” Last I checked she didn't give two-shits about you.” I stayed quiet for a while, going down memory lane. “You will never be able to replace your father. If you hadn't been born, he wouldn't have left me. Cagna!!. I regret giving birth to you. I should have just gotten rid of you.” The memories of my childhood, of my mother's neglect and indifference came back. I left Italy to escape her toxic attitude, to start a new life where I could be free from her constant criticisms and insults. Enzo noticed my silence and put a hand on my shoulder. "Hey, Rey, you okay? Don't let her get to you." I took a deep breath and shook my head. "I'm fine, Enzo. It's just...she only reaches out to me when she needs something. And I'm not even sure what she wants this time." Enzo snorted. "Probably money or a place to stay. She's always been a user, Rey. Don't let her suck you back in." I nodded, knowing Enzo was right. But a part of me still longed for my mother's love and approval, no matter how much I tried to convince myself otherwise. I typed out a response, trying to keep my emotions in check. "Hey, Mom. I'm busy with work right now. How much do you need this time?” I sent the message and turned to Enzo. "Let's not talk about her anymore. I need a distraction." Enzo grinned mischievously. "Well, I have just the thing. Let's go out and have some fun. We can hit that new club that just opened up downtown. Who knows, you might meet Mr blue eyes again or maybe someone hotter” he winked. I laughed “common Enzo, I'm not clubbing on a weekday. Besides I heard the CEO of Dras Oasis will be at work tomorrow. I need to be sober to see him.” “Jesus!! Rey, that's what you've been keeping from me since. I heard the man is s*x on the legs. That's what the tabloids say, no one has really seen him up close.” I rolled my eyes, laughing. "Enzo, focus! I need to be professional tomorrow. Enzo chuckled. "Fine, fine. “ Want me to help with your outfit? You need to look professionally sexy.” I raised an eyebrow, laughing hysterically, “Oh God, Enzo, what do you mean by professionally sexy?” I asked, still heaving with laughter. “Forget young lady, let's rewatch that novela Pasion Morena. I can't wait to have my own Leo” he said. “Ehn! Speaking of your own Leo, what happened to Jonathan, the bar guy?” I asked. He scoffed, “he ain't straightforward, and you know I hate complicated s**t!, so I dropped his ass. I deal with enough complicated cases in the hospital. I can't deal with another one.” Enzo was a doctor, a talented one at that. It's more like he has split personality, he acts so cold and stern at the hospital that one wouldn't ever believe he was this way. “Anyway, back to the movie,” Enzo chided. We were halfway through with the first episode when my mind drifted off to Draven. I remembered his words, the way he looked at me, like I was his prey but he never acted on it. I started to imagine what it would feel like to kiss those lips, or to be held with those hands. My legs tightened, I started feeling hot and I knew I was in trouble.
