I hesitated.
Her voice was so small. So raw.
“Don’t go,” she’d whispered, fingers clinging to mine like I was the only steady thing in her world.
I shouldn’t have stayed. I knew better. Everything in me screamed to walk away. To be the man with discipline, with control.
But her words wrapped around my resolve like a vine, slowly squeezing the logic from my brain.
“I can’t stay,” I murmured, the words hollow. Even I didn’t believe them.
Her grip tightened.
“I really didn’t do it,” she continued, slurring slightly. Her words hitched, thick with something too close to grief. “I swear. Kai… Kai is responsible. Why doesn’t anyone believe me?”
