Michael takes my hand and leads me down the hall, and I don't even pay attention to where we are going. He opens a door and pulls me in after him. I look around and see a couch along one wall, a dresser under the window and a bed against the other wall, with two doors. One is open which leads into the bathroom, the other must be a closet. I stand there not sure what to do, Michael takes my hand and leads me to the couch. He sits and pulls me down with him, my mind is blank, and my emotions are gone. It's almost as if I were numb. I lay my head against his chest as he holds me and runs his hand through my hair.
The door opens not long after, and Blade comes in, followed by Mac. They take one look at me and their eyes fall to the floor. It's not their fault he died. They shouldn't blame themselves. They did everything they could for him.
"Michael, will you take Melanie home, please? Stay with her, I'll be there tomorrow once we get everything figured out here." Blade doesn't take his eyes off me as he speaks.
Michael tightened his hold on me, " No problem, dad. Come on, Mel. Lets get you home, you've had a long night and I'm sure you could use the rest." He kisses my head before he relinquishes his hold on me before standing.
Mac stepped forward and crouched down in front of me, because really I'd checked out. I barely even saw him.
Michael's POV
Melanie hasn't said anything since we were in her dad's room. I wanted to tell her what happened. I felt so guilty. Those bullets Spyder took were meant for me. He shielded me and now he's dead. If she knew she'd hate me, I know she would. I know none of the others will tell her what happened, but that doesn't mean it won't haunt me for the rest of my life. I held onto her the whole time.
When I stood up, I expected her to follow. I turned back to see her staring straight ahead with her hands next to her legs. She didn't even attempt to move. I looked at my dad and then Mac. I'm guessing he knew what was going on, because I watched as he crouched in front of her. He took her hands in his, trying to get her to react to him.
"Melanie, honey we are going to get you home, okay." Mac turns toward us, but never lets go of her hands. "She's in shock, she may come out of this in a few hours or a few days. Its really up to her." Mac stood and he tried to pull her up but she didn't do anything.
"I got her Mac." I said, as I stooped down and picked her up bridal style. It's then I finally realized she had barely anything on, so I set her back down on the couch before heading to my dresser. I pulled out a t-shirt and went back to her. My heart breaks for her as I have to put the shirt on her and she still doesn't react. I picked her up once more and kissed her head as I left my room.
Mac and my dad don't say anything as they lead the way back into the main room. No one says a thing, they just put their heads down as we pass. Lip opens the door as I carry her outside.
"How is she doing?" Lip asks, his face shows nothing but concern. "She's in shock, at least that's what Mac said I'm taking her home." I tell him as I reach her car.
He opens the door and that's when I see Pepper jump into the car and she gets in the back. I had completely forgotten about her. "I can't believe I forgot about her." I say as I placed Melanie in the passenger seat.
"Don't worry man, I took care of her. What's her name?" "Pepper, Mel found her when she and Anna were coming back from the falls. She found her tied in a bag and she was all alone." "Wish I could get my hands on whoever did that, but at least she's in a safe place now. Melanie wouldn't let anything happen to her." I nod my head as he grasps my shoulder. "What about you? Do you need anything?" He asks as I look at Melanie through the window.
"Yeah, to rewind time, so I could have taken his place. Those bullets were meant for me, not him." I said, still looking at her.
"Dude, you can't think like that. Anyone of us could be where he is now." He said before he gave me a hug. "I'll remember that, thanks." I walked around the car and got in. Pepper whines and I turned around to look at her on the back seat. She's lying down with her head on her paws, with her puppy eyes staring up at Mel.
"I know, Pep. We're going to get her home." I grasped her left hand after I started the car and headed toward her house. It wasn't long before we pulled up outside and I saw my mom's car parked out front. I get out after parking the car and Pepper follows me. My mom comes out on the porch as I open the passenger side door. She rushes to me once she sees me lift Melanie into my arms. I kicked the door shut as I headed toward her.
"What's happened?" Tears swam in my mom's eyes as she gazed at a catatonic Melanie.
"Mac says she's in shock, and that she needs rest. She hasn't said anything or even reacted to anything after we left Spyder's room." My mom opens the door for me as I head straight for the stairs.
I got her up the stairs and into her room, without so much as a movement from her. She just stares into space as I sit on her bed and hold her as if she were a child.
I held onto her until her eyes closed and her breathing evens out. I lay her down and covered her with a blanket. Then, I pull her desk chair up next to the bed and just watch over her as she sleeps. It isn't long after that, that sleep takes me as well.
