Chapter 11

1066 Words
I wake up to the sound of Michael yelling and Pepper yipping. I got up and slowly stood up from my bed. I look down and see myself in an over-sized t-shirt that went to mid thigh. Grasping the collar, I brought it to my nose and sniffed it. It smells like Michael, which makes me smile. The yipping from Pepper has me heading toward my window. I watch as she runs away as he chases after her. He doesn't know that chase is her favorite game. I turn away from the window and head into my bathroom. I do my business and take a shower before rummaging through my clothes and grabbing the first comfortable things I see. Once I have my loose shirt and a pair of leggings, I head downstairs. There's movement in the kitchen but I ignore it and head outside. Once Michael sees me, he comes straight towards me, though Pepper beats him. I give her some love before standing up and coming face to face with him. He cups my cheek as his eyes searched mine. I saw an emotion flash across his face and then it was gone before I could tell what it was. He takes my hand and leads me to the porch swing and sits down. I sat next to him but he left plenty of space between us. I feel the pit in my stomach even more now, at the distance between us. "Do you want to talk? I don't even know if I should ask how you're doing after yesterday?" He focused his attention on Pepper. "I don't feel a thing, is there something wrong with me?" His eyes met mine for a second before he shook his head. "Mel, you're still in shock, though I'm glad you're moving around on your own and talking. Emotionally, you've been through a lot in the last 24 hours." He gives me a poker face as he looks back at me. I wish I knew why there's a distance between us. For some reason, it's there and I don't like it. "Mom made breakfast, I know you didn't have anything to eat last night." Michael stood and took my hand before pulling me up and heading for the door. We find Mary in the kitchen and she comes straight to me and wraps me in a tight embrace. "I'm so sorry, honey. But don't you worry, I have everything under control. Okay?" She leans back and looks me in the eye searching for something. "Thank you, Ma." I tell her as she releases me. "Go sit down, I'll be right there with the food." Michael steers me to the table and pulls out my chair. I couldn't help looking toward the head of the table and we found that spot empty. My heart squeezes in my chest as I hear a truck pull up outside and two doors opening and closing. I was shocked to see Anna walking through the door followed by Blade. I got up and went straight to Anna. She wraps me in her arms as I cry on her shoulder. I didn't notice Blade and Michael leaving through the back door. "What are you doing here? I thought you wouldn't be home until the end of summer." She needed my hair out of my face as she gave me a serious look. "Did you really think I wouldn't come home to be with my best friend during her time of need? Michael called me last night and I got on the first plane back." Mary gets up and hugs us both before herding us to the table for breakfast. To be honest, I don't even want to eat, but I know if I don't they won't leave me alone. So I might as well force myself to make everyone else happy. Michael's POV I had woken up to scratching at the door. I didn't want to wake Melanie, so I got up and took Pepper outside as my mom got breakfast going. Of course, Pepper wouldn't come when I called and when I went after her she thought I was playing a game. She didn't stop running away from me, until Melanie showed up on the front porch. I kept Anna coming as a surprise because I knew she would be able to help her more than any of us. When my dad came in, he nodded his head toward the back door and I followed him outside. "How is she doing?" "Well, she's up and moving around, she is talking too. So that's a good sign." "Well, now is the time to rally around her, we're all she has left." He grasped my shoulder as I nodded. That's when I heard the rumble of bikes coming down the road and turning in the driveway. This is the one thing I love about the club; when someone is in need or there's a situation, we all rally. The other old ladies get out of their vehicles as their husbands get off their bikes. The family aspect of the club is what I love, everything else about the club I hate. My mom, Anna, and Melanie come out on the porch as everyone carries all sorts of dishes and bags with them. They all head to Mel and hug her and give her their condolences as they head inside. I went to her as I saw her wipe the tears from her face. She was willing to come to me as I folded my arms around her in a tight embrace. "Thank you." I heard her whisper into my ear. "Baby, this is what we do. We are family, so when one is hurting, we are all hurting. Come on, let's go inside." She shakes her head before locking her eyes with mine. "No, I want to sit out here for a bit if that's okay? It's a little crowded in there at the moment." "Whatever you want to do I'll do." I took her hand and led her to the porch swing. Pepper sits at our feet, as we sit together. By lunch time, we were about to go in when Pepper looked toward the road and more rumbling could be heard. My dad comes out and stands in front of Melanie as I do the same, while we watch the newcomers arrive.
