Chapter 9

I stood next to Blade as I looked around. There are quite a few people outside and everything is quiet, which is strange because normally the place always has something going on. "Come on, Kiddo. I need you to stay with me." His eyes bore into mine as I nodded my head. He leads me to the door and before we even get to it, it opens and Michael is standing there. Blade continues to hold my hand as he enters. The place is dark and smells of smoke. There are wh*res everywhere and some of the guys keep their heads down. I'm led down a dark hallway to a door that says, Spyder. He stops and looks at me. I'm so lost right now I don't know what to do. "Melanie, what you're about to see is going to be hard to deal with. We have tried to do everything we could for him." Blade looks at Michael and they share a look, before he switches places with his dad. I feel his arms wrap around me as my legs feel like they want to give out. My whole body is shaking as a strangled cry leaves me. "Mel, baby. I have you, you won't be alone in there." Michael kisses my head before he slowly pulls away. He reaches for the door handle, but I stop him. "I don't know if I can do this, Michael. I can't do this alone." My voice cracks as he cups my face with his left hand. "Baby, I'm not going anywhere and you won't be alone," Michael said. As he turns back to the door, I see a flash of blonde hair rounding the corner. I ignore it as the door is pushed open. I stood there as I got a look into his room. I feel as if I have cement blocks attached to my feet. I take one breath and then another, as I can feel panic begin to rise inside me. I see Mac hovering over the bed, he turns to me and he seems defeated. He reaches his hand out toward me and I still can't move. Mac is the pack doctor, not to mention the sergeant at arms. He learned everything he knows from his time in the military. Although he doesn't work in our local hospital, he still gets doctor privileges there anyway. Mac looks between me and Michael before he comes over to me. "Melanie, I truly am sorry, I tried everything I could for him." My voice eludes me as I stare at the bed. My dad looks so small and weak just lying there. He used to be larger than life when I was a kid, but lately I just wanted to run as fast and as far away from him as possible. In this instance, though, there isn't anywhere to go but forward. "Michael stay with me." My voice is barely above a whisper. "Always." I hear him say. I reached out to Mac while Michael continued to hold me up. Mac takes my hand and moves to the side, giving me a clear view of my father. He looks ashen, almost a pasty white. His eyes are closed and I see his chest rising and falling, his breathing is so shallow like he can't get enough air in. There's a heart monitor attached to his chest and fluids hang from a pole next to the bed. I tentatively stepped into the room. "What happened?" I asked as I stepped closer to the bed. "He took two bullets to the chest. I've done everything I could for him. There isn't anymore I can do. I'm so sorry, I couldn't protect him." Mac looks down and I know he must be blaming himself for not being able to fix the damage that was done. "I know you did your best, Mac. You always have, thank you." A tear slipped down my cheek as his eyes met mine. Michael still hasn't let me go, and I'm thankful for that. I sat gingerly on the bed and took his left hand in mine. Not sure what to do now. The beeping starts to slow and the machine begin to flash with a yellow light. "Daddy, I need you to wake up. You promised me I wouldn't be alone. You can't leave me here alone. I can't lose you too. You're all I have, I can't do this without you." The dam breaks and my eyes flood with tears. I can't control it, not now at any rate. I placed my head on his chest and cried. Michael and Mac never left my side, as I lost the only family member I had left. I'm alone now, I don't know what I'm going to do, but I know I can't stay here. My knees give out and Mac catches me before I hit the floor. "He promised he would never leave me, Mac. What am I supposed to do now?" I cry into his chest. "He didn't want to leave you. He told us to look out for you, and that you were the only good thing left in his life." Mac said, as my body shook. "I know we had our issues, but I never imagined this would happen." My tears began to subside. "The only thing I can tell you is, to make the best out of your life. Make him proud, and know that no matter where you go or what you do, he will always be with you. And to remember this is and always will be your home." Mac tells me. "Thank you, Mac. You were always a good friend and brother to my dad, and you were always a good big brother to me." Mac gives me a big hug, as Blade, Lip, Slick, and Mo come in to move the body of their fallen brother and President.
