I climbed into my beautiful car. It's a 1968 Chevy Impala. I rebuilt it with the help of my friends. It belonged to my grandfather. He passed away three years ago, and he left it to me. I just finished the restoration.
I know my grandpa would love to see it. It's the color of the ocean, a deep blue with a metallic finish to make it sparkle. I hopped in and started the engine. It always gives me the chills, and I'm amazed at the purr of the engine. I rev it once, and smile to myself as I put it in gear. Man, I do love this car.
I'm on the road within seconds, we live a few miles from town in a quaint little farmhouse, my mom used to say. Though, I wouldn't call it that now, things have changed and not for the better.
I turned on the gravel road and came to a stop at a dead end. I parked my car and hopped out. As I walk through the trees, I'm hoping that it'll just be Anna. Of course, when I get to Clear Creek, Anna is there with Michael.
"Hey, you two." She turned around at the sound of my voice.
I smile as I walked to where Anna is sitting with her feet in the water.
"Hey Mel, what do you want to do today?"
I know she is probably having the same issue Michael is having. I want to make it better, but their father and my dad are like two peas in a pod. When they make a decision, its final, there's no, if, and, or buts about it. Michael is definitely not alright. He hasn't looked at me or said anything since I sat down.
I can't believe our dad's. Anna, gets to go while Michael and I are stuck here. I know my dad and their dad wanted Michael to join the club, but I know he doesn't want to. Our plan was to get out of here and away from this, but I guess that won't be happening.
"Hey Michael, I'm really sorry about everything. Our dads really know how to ruin something good. I don't know what I want to do. Actually, I do know, and that's not going home."
He doesn't say anything, he just keeps staring into the water.
"Well, why dont we go for a drive, or maybe a hike? I know mom would love to see you. It's been a bit since you came over." Anna gave me a smile.
"Yeah, I was so busy trying to get the applications done and studying for the SAT's took a lot of time. I'd like to see Ma. Why, not."
As Anna and I stand up to leave, I notice Michael hasn't moved.
"Hey, Michael, aren't you coming with us?"
"No, I think I'm going to stay here for a bit. You two go ahead, I'll be home soon." He still hasn't taken his eyes off the water.
"OK, I guess we'll see you later."
As I left him there, I couldn't help but look back. He doesn't deserve his future being ripped away just like I didn't deserve it either. Anna and I made it back to my car in no time. We hopped in and we drove a few minutes to the Walker's home. We got out and we headed for the door. Once inside, Anna makes her presence known.
"Mama, I have a surprise for you!" Anna yells once the door closes.
"Well, I'm in the kitchen." Anna and I giggle as we walked through the living room to the kitchen.
Now its my turn. "Hey Ma, how are you?"
I smile as she looks up from making dinner. She stops what she's doing and comes around the island giving me the warmest hug. I can't help but hug her back. Moisture collects in my eyes but I don't let them fall. She smells how my mother used to, like sugar and bread. Not to mention the hint of roses from her perfume.
"I have always loved your hugs. What are you doing?"
She cups my cheek as she speaks. "I have missed you, Mel. I'm making a roast and potatoes with veggies. So, where have you been hiding?"
My mom, Becky, and Mary used to be friends since they were little. When my mom and my brother Alex died, she assumed the role. She's been someone I could always turn to, even when my mom was alive. She's never tried to take the role of my mother, but she's always been supportive and always there for me when I needed someone.
"I've just been finishing up stuff for school, it smells great in here though. Do you need any help?"
She gives me a smile as she shews us away. "No, I have it under control. I'm glad you are doing okay, now both of you run along. Just make sure you're here in time for dinner."
"Okay, Ma. I'll make sure we call later to know what time to be back here for dinner." I smiled at her as Anna took my hand.
"Oh, mom. I just wanted to let you know Michael would be home later, not sure what time though."
Ma, nods her head as she turns back to the counter.
We raced outside and hit the road not sure where to, though. But that's the fun part, isn't it?
