When I woke the next morning, I stretched and felt the other side of the bed, it was cold. I lifted my head and looked over and saw a piece of paper lying on the pillow. I reached over and picked it up, "Forever and For Always" was written on the paper. Tears gathered in my eyes as I looked at the paper. I hold it close as I sit up and get out of bed. I get my clothes and head to the bathroom to get ready to leave.
I place his note in the pocket of my purse, grab my bag and head down the stairs. I find Anna and Pepper in the kitchen.
"Pepper has eaten, and I made breakfast sandwiches, easy and filling", she said with a smile. She hands me one and I return the smile before I take a bite.
" Mmm.. This is good and thank you for everything you do for me." I said.
"Girl, I love you and I'll always be here. Now, let's hit the road." She said as Pepper ran off as we locked up and headed toward the car. It's a beautiful morning with the sun shining and birds chirping. Pepper comes back as we reach the car, she gets in the back and lays on the seat. Anna gets in and I hop in and start the car. I take one final look at my home before heading down the road to start the next chapter of my life.
After a ten-hour drive, we have reached our destination, which will be our home for the next four years. Since my dad died, I have been left with everything. So I was able to purchase a furnished condo within walking distance of the University. It's a nice building in a quiet area. There's a few people besides me who have pets, but everyone stays to themselves. Which is fine with us, since we have to get settled in and also when we start our classes.
"I can't believe we are going to be living here." Anna says as we get the last of the boxes through the door.
We have to go up one flight of stairs to reach our condo. When you open the door, you're greeted by an open floor plan. The living room goes straight into the dining room. There's a spacious kitchen with an island. Two bedrooms have a connecting bathroom. Everything is modern and trendy, which is just fine for the two of us. My room is the farthest from the door, but it seemed slightly bigger. I have a massive bed in the middle of the room and tall windows that let in plenty of natural light, plus the walking closet doesn't hurt. Anna's room is basically the same except for color choices. Mine's different shades of blue, while Anna's is different shades of purple.
Pepper sat by the door and whined, so Anna and I grabbed her leash and went to see the neighborhood. There were a few people outside as we walked. Everyone we saw seemed friendly, which felt nice. I didn't think about where we were walking with Pepper, but within minutes we were on campus.
I can't believe I'm here. To actually be able to do this is a dream that had to come with the price of heartbreak.
"Hey, how about we stop at that little shop we passed on the way here and get something to eat, then go home and crash," she says as we turn around and head home.
"I like the way you think, and then we have orientation in the morning. I hope Pepper does okay while we're gone," I said as we crossed the road. "I think she'll do just fine, but we will be able to check on her throughout the day. Since we live so close to campus," Anna says with a smile.
"That's true," I said with a laugh. As we headed toward the little shop. Pepper stops and begins to growl while looking into a dark alley. My skin crawls as I feel goosebumps spread across my body. I wasn't sure I actually heard it, but her ears weren't perked up anymore, they were down and her fur was standing up along her back.
"Come on Pepper, let's go, there's nothing there." I told her as I kept an eye on the alley, but I didn't see anything. I was overcome with fear, even though Anna and Pepper were with me, but I couldn't help the sense of dread that washed over me. I forced my eyes away from the darkened alley and pulled on her leash a little to get her to follow me. Anna didn't need to be encouraged, she was just as unsettled as we were.
"I don't know what that was about back there, but I didn't like it." I told her as we made it to the next corner. "Same here, it was creepy and a little nerve wracking. I didn't see anything, but something made Pepper stop and do what she did." She said as we stopped outside the little shop.
"Yeah, I dont know what made her do that. I've never seen her do anything like that before. But now it's time for food. Ham and cheese with a side salad, please. I'll wait here with Pepper." I said. "Okay, I'll get dinner, be right back." She wiggled her fingers at me as she headed inside. I couldn't help but laugh at her antics.
