NATALIA The sound of glass shattering jolted me awake. My heart pounded as I sat up. It took me a moment to register where I was, still disoriented from surprise. I’m in our bedroom, and I didn’t need to see the time to know that I shouldn’t be up yet. The moonlight still seeping from the closed curtains was enough. My eyes instinctively landed beside me, expecting to see my sleeping husband or him about to check on me, but he was nowhere to be found. Was that shattering earlier…? I might have been traumatized by all the mess we’ve been through, as the first thing that came to mind was danger. I threw off the covers and got to my feet. My body moved before my mind could even catch up. I found myself rushing down the hall and headed straight to the kitchen. And that’s where I found him
