Episode 2: Fate

The city felt different in the morning. Not quieter—never quieter—but sharper. Like everything had been washed clean overnight and left behind something colder. I stared at my reflection in the mirror for a few seconds longer than necessary. Same face. Same eyes. But something about me felt… slightly out of place. Maybe it was the memory of last night. Or maybe it was him. I shook the thought away, grabbed my bag, and stepped out of my apartment. Today wasn’t about distractions. Today was about my future. The job interview—no, the final onboarding—was the only thing standing between me and a life I had been trying too hard to rebuild. I wasn’t going to mess it up. Not for anyone. Not even a stranger from a club. 1. The Morning After Feeling The ride to the company building was too long. Or maybe I just couldn’t stop thinking. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw him again. That voice. That look. That ridiculous calm like nothing in the world could shake him. “You might not like what you decide.” I exhaled sharply. “Forget it,” I whispered to myself. “It was just a night.” Just a night. That’s what it was supposed to be. Nothing more. Nothing less. I repeated it like a spell until the car finally stopped. 2. The Building That Changed Everything The company tower rose in front of me like it owned the entire street. Glass. Steel. Power. People in suits moved in and out like they all knew exactly where they belonged. I didn’t. Not yet. I adjusted my blouse, took a breath, and walked in. The lobby was too quiet. Too polished. Even the air felt expensive. A receptionist smiled politely. “Name?” I gave it. She checked something on her screen. Then paused. That pause made my stomach tighten. “Please wait a moment,” she said. I nodded slowly, pretending I didn’t notice the way she looked at me again before picking up her phone. Something felt off. But I ignored it. Until I heard it. 3. The Voice From Last Night “Let her in.” The voice cut through the room instantly. Low. Controlled. Unmistakable. My heart stopped before my brain caught up. No. That couldn’t be— I turned slowly. And there he was. Walking through the glass doors behind the reception desk like the entire building had been built around him. Same man. Same eyes. But now— He wasn’t just a stranger in a club. He was power. Real power. The kind people instinctively stepped aside for. The receptionist lowered her head immediately. “Sir.” Sir. The word didn’t make sense in my mind. Until he looked at me. And everything clicked into place. 4. The Realization My throat went dry. “You…” I started. But the words didn’t come out properly. He stopped a few steps away from me. Hands in his pocket. Calm. Too calm. Like nothing about this moment was unusual. Like he hadn’t just turned my entire world upside down with one look. “You’re early,” he said simply. My mind struggled to keep up. “Early?” I repeated. “What… what is this?” A faint pause. Then— “You applied for the position,” he said. My breath caught. Position. Yes. The job. That’s why I was here. But something about the way he said it made my skin tighten. “I didn’t expect you to accept,” I said carefully. His gaze didn’t move from mine. “I didn’t expect you to show up.” That hit harder than it should have. I swallowed. “You work here?” I asked, though I already knew the answer. A faint smile touched his lips. “I own it.” Silence. Heavy. Unavoidable. Everything inside me froze. Own it. No. That wasn’t possible. It couldn’t be. My voice came out weaker than I wanted. “You’re the CEO.” It wasn’t a question. He nodded once. Simple. Final. And that was the moment everything shifted. 5. The Rules Change I stepped back without realizing it. “You’re the man from last night,” I said quietly. “Yes.” My mind raced. No surname. No introduction. No warning. Just him. The man I had laughed with. The man I had almost— I stopped that thought immediately. He studied me for a moment. Then said something that made my stomach drop. “I didn’t expect you to be here either.” “What does that mean?” I asked quickly. He tilted his head slightly. “It means I didn’t know you were the candidate I approved.” Approved. The word hit differently now. “You approved my application?” I asked. “Yes.” My pulse quickened. “So you knew… before last night?” His eyes darkened slightly. “No.” A pause. Then— “I didn’t connect the names.” My chest tightened. “So last night was… coincidence?” For the first time, something unreadable crossed his expression. “Nothing about last night was coincidence.” 6. The First Command A silence stretched between us. People moved around us in the lobby, but it felt like they were far away. Like we were in a space no one else could enter. Then he spoke again. “Come with me.” It wasn’t an invitation. It was a directive. I hesitated. “I just came for onboarding,” I said. “You’re not onboarding in a lobby,” he replied calmly. Something about the way he said it made it impossible to argue. Still— I hesitated one more time. Then followed him. 7. The Elevator Moment The elevator doors closed with a soft sound that felt too final. We were alone. The silence here was worse. Tighter. He didn’t look at me immediately. Just pressed a button. The elevator began moving. I should have said something. Anything. But my thoughts were tangled. Finally— “You didn’t tell me who you were,” I said. “I didn’t ask who you were either,” he replied. Fair. Uncomfortable. True. I swallowed. “Last night shouldn’t have happened,” I said quietly. That made him look at me. Properly. Like he was studying a problem he already understood better than I did. “Then why didn’t you leave?” The question caught me off guard. I hesitated. “I don’t know,” I admitted. That small honesty changed something in the air. Not softer. Stranger. He looked away again before I could read him. “You will need discipline here,” he said. “Excuse me?” He turned slightly. “This company doesn’t tolerate distractions.” My chest tightened. Was he talking about work? Or me? The elevator slowed. And then— Ding. The doors opened. 8. The Floor That Felt Like a Warning This wasn’t an office floor. This was his floor. The design changed instantly—quieter, more private, almost intimidating. No noise. No chaos. Just control. He stepped out first. Then paused. Looking back at me. “You start today,” he said. I nodded slowly. “Yes.” A beat. Then his voice dropped slightly. “And Miss…” I looked up. “…try not to remember last night while you’re working for me.” My heart stopped. He turned and walked away before I could respond. And I stood there— realizing something terrifying. This wasn’t going to be a normal job. Not even close. Because the man I met at midnight… was now the one deciding my future. And I had no idea whether that was the beginning of my success. Or the beginning of my downfall.
