Goodbye England, Hello California

1593 Words
I ran toward the nearest door and found it to be locked. I checked the door next to it to see if that door would open. I yanked and yanked, but the door wouldn't budge. I turned around to see his red eyes looking down at me with anger. All I could do was scream.......... One year earlier- While driving to my crazy of a mother's "hometown", I looked out the window and thought, how the heck did I end up here. Days before the terrible accident happened, I was in my room in England listening to my favorite music artist and doing my homework, until I got a terrible phone call from my dad's work. My father died at his work on the construction sight. When my father died I didn't eat for days. I rarely smiled and when I did it was a half hearten one. I didn't even leave my room. I didn't leave for food or to take a shower. But after the funeral, it was even worse. I couldn't live alone, so now I have to go live with my mother. My mother is the kind of person you would call insane. I think of her as the crazy lady on the street, that says crazy things, and confuses everyone. But that's probably just me. She's the total opposite of me. While I'm more of a shy and kind of quiet girl, she's the loud and outgoing type of person. Lucky me. Ever since my mother and father got a divorce, I haven't really seen her since then. Father was always worried about my well being, that he would forget to do his daily things, like eat lunch, or go to work. Father always was sick. So sick, that I was afraid to leave him alone. But when he was feeling better he would go to work so he could earn more money, and those days were rare. But now, he's gone. And he was getting so much better. A few hours before the incident, he was smiling and healthy, and now... he's gone. So now I have to live with my mother. Yay.... I sigh, and look at my phone. No messages. Surprisingly. Note the sarcasm. You see I didn't exactly have the capacity to talk to other human beings to well. Altogether, I'm a really shy person. I got that trait from my dad. I don't talk a lot, and when I do, most of the time you probably wouldn't even hear me. But that's okay. I actually like being alone. It's peaceful, and quiet. It also gives me the opportunity to enjoy reading all of my books. Just as I turn off my phone, the cab stops. The cab driver gets out, and takes out my two luggage's from the trunk and puts them on the curb. "This is it kid, that'll be 34 dollars." The cab driver guy tells me. I grab my bag and look for my wallet. I take it out, and give him two twenties. "Keep the change." I tell him, as I step out of the cab. I close the door, and he drives off. I sigh. I put my bag on, and grab both of my luggage's. I turn around, and to my surprise find myself in front of a coffee shop. Starbucks to be exact. I walk up to the doors, and let go of one of my luggage's to open the door. When I do, I grab the luggage, and walk inside. I let out a sigh of relief. I walk to a table that's next to the windows, and has a comfy looking seat at it. I place my bag on the seat that's next to the one I'm going to sit at, and place my luggage's next to the table. I walk over to the cashier, and order a frozen caramel macchiato with whip cream on top. I pay the amount I owe, and walk back to my table, and take a seat. I get my phone out of my back pocket, and turn it on. No new messages. It's already 12:35, she should be here already. As I wait for my mother, my drink is ready, and my name is called. I quickly sit up, and walk over to the counter to get my drink. Just as I grab it, my mother walks through the door. I quickly turn around, and speed walk over to my table before she see's me. Just as I put my drink down, I hear a happy screech. "Oh my god! Natalie! Is that you? Oh my gosh, you got so big!" Before I could reply back to my mother, she quickly runs up to me, and gives me a huge bear hug. Did I ever tell you I hate hugging? Well I do. When she notices that I'm not hugging back, she lets me go. "So, how was your flight? It must have been tiring having to go through all of those flights. Luckily I made your favorite. Brownies." She gives me a happy smile, as she drives away from Starbucks. I give her a smile in return. I can't believe she remembered. Maybe it won't be as bad living here, as I thought. We drive for another 10 minutes, and begin to head into the woods. It takes another 10 minutes to finally arrive to the house. I get out, after she parked the car, and turned the engine off. I get one of my luggage's, while she grabs the other. "Here follow me. I'll show you your room, and you can set it up, and unpack all of your things. The rest of your stuff should be coming in from the mail, in a few days." She walks up to the front of the house, grabs her keys, and opens the door. I walk in first, and gasp. It's so pretty. There are rows and rows of books everywhere. Along with beautiful furniture, and gorgeous artwork hanging up on the walls. My mom smiles, and begins to walk towards the stairs. I follow her all the way up to the second floor, and follow her all the way to the second door to the right. "This is your room, and two doors down on the left is mine. You have your own walk in closet, and bathroom. Dinner should be ready by 5:30." She gives me a big smile, and walks downstairs. I walk into the room, and sigh. It reminds me of home. My bed is a queen size bed, with purple sheeting, and grey pillows. My curtains match the bed, as well as my fluffy rug. I have a desk that has all of my school supplies that mom got for me ahead of time, and a computer with a key board. I walk over to the closet with my luggage's, and begin to empty them out, and put the clothes where I want them. Just as I finish organizing my clothes, I hear a buzz. I must have gotten a message. I get up, and check my phone. Mom- Hey I need to get some more ingredients for dinner, about to head out to the grocery store. Are you going to be okay? Me- Yeah I'll be fine. Mom- Okay. I should be back in an hour. I put my phone down, and grab all of my bathroom items. I put them all away, and head back out to my bedroom. I run onto my bed, and grab my bag. I pull out my book, and begin to read. By the time I finish the book, I hear a buzz again. I put the book down, and grab my phone. Mom- Dinner. I get up off of my bed, and put my phone in my back pocket. I walk downstairs, and look for the dining room. I turn towards the kitchen, and walk into the room next to it. Bingo. "Hey mom. What are we having for Dinner?" I ask her as I sit down in the chair across from her. "Oh I just made spaghetti with meatballs, along with some garlic bread. I remember you loved it, so as a welcome to California gift, I made them. Oh and for dessert I have those brownies I told you about earlier, as well as some vanilla ice cream, we could put on top of the brownies." She gives me a big smile and starts to dig in to her food. I give her a small smile back, and begin to eat. By the time we're done, it's already 6 o'clock, and mom gets the dessert. She gives me a huge amount, and I smile. When everything was finished, I try helping with cleaning up but mom stops me. "I've got it. Why don't you go and take your shower, and head to bed. We're going to wake up early so I can show you around town a little bit." She turns around and begins to finish the dishes. I give a small groan, not wanting to wake up early. I walk up to my room and take my shower. By the time I'm done with picking out my pajamas, and the clothes I'm going to be wearing, as well as blow-drying my hair, it's already 8 o'clock. I put my phone on the nightstand, and put my glasses in their case. I lay down on my bed, and turn off my lamp. Maybe living in California won't be as bad as I thought.
