26 Nothing, and Everything They rode for about an hour in silence, which suited Thomas fine. It gave him a chance to pull himself together. He hardly knew what to say to his father anymore. He had questions, but he was afraid to ask. Afraid of what more he might discover about his father. About himself. He already felt undone by everything he had learned. They came to a part of the path where high hills loomed closely on either side, throwing them into shadow. As they rounded one of the hills, Matthew suddenly drew his horse to a halt. He glanced at Thomas. “Now we walk. Follow me.” They left the horses hobbled at the base of the hill, and he followed his father as Matthew began to walk towards the summit, following a faint narrow path.
