A man in his mid-fifties and dressed in slacks and a jacket walked past the woman. She stepped away from the wall, appearing to confront him. From his vantage point, Craig could see that the woman’s body language was aggressive, intimidating. Their voices were rising now, though Craig couldn’t make out any words. Their back-and-forth continued. Then the woman’s arm darted out and she pushed the man in the chest. He pointed at her, a gesture that seemed to say, “Don’t try that again.” She grabbed his outstretched wrist, twisted upward with both hands, and forced him to the sidewalk on his knees. The man bellowed in pain. Seeing the older man being decked by a martial arts move he knew well, Craig instinctively launched himself across the street to help—and into the path of an oncoming car
