Mackenzi POV
(5 years later)
As I roll over in my bed, I remember today is the big day. I officially take over as Alpha of our pack. My father decided to step down and allow me this opportunity on my eighteenth birthday. We will do the ceremony tonight under the full moon.
‘Good morning sleepy head! I am so excited about tonight.’ Storm announces in my mind. ‘Do you think that we will finally find our mate tonight?’
‘Oh Storm, don’t start with the whole mate thing again. It is too early in the morning for this. We compromised that when I turn twenty-five, we will focus on finding our mate. We need to focus on making our pack stronger.’ I remind her.
‘I know, I know, but every wolf needs love and you are denying me of my mate, my second half. You wait when I see our mate, I am going to jump his bones.’
‘You little b***h! You better not even think about it.’ I hiss at her.
‘Well, I guess we will see.’ She says as she closed the wall to me.
Sometimes I really wonder how far my wolf will challenge me. She constantly reminds me that our strength is way stronger than I can imagine.
I get out of bed and go to the bathroom and start to prepare for my morning workout. Jaxon, who will be sworn in as my Beta, is probably waiting for me for our morning run.
Kenz, let’s go! Today is a busy day and we do not have time to waste. —Jax pops into my mind link.
I know, I know! I am coming! —I reply.
I do my business quickly in the bathroom, then pull on the pair of my high waist black legging and black and grey marble print sports bra and black running shoes.
Rushing down the stairs, I meet Jaxon in the kitchen.
“ Happy Birthday, sexy.” Jaxon greets me.
“Awe, thanks, babe!” I swoop him up into a big hug.
Jaxon and I have been friends since forever. Our parents have been friends since childhood, so it only made sense that we are also. They thought we would end up mates, but we are strictly friends. As a matter of fact, Jaxon being a year older than me, came out to his parents last year as being bisexual.
Of course, because he is my best friend, I have known him since we were pups. Even though he is very masculine, standing at 6’3 with a smooth sandy skin tone with blue eyes and brown hair, he has never been one to swoon over the girls. There have been both girls and guys here and there; still no mate. He says he is bisexual because he does not know who the moon goddess will pair him with. I guess we will all see.
“Mackenzi, please make sure you are back early because we have to do your hair and makeup.” My mom fusses over me while feeding my twin siblings. Yep, you read correctly. I am no longer an only child.
About 3 years ago, my mother became fed up with my father’s unfaithfulness. She decided she had had enough. One night when she was in deep pain from his betrayal, she mustered all of her strength and walked into his office while he was doing the do. She shocked my father by rejecting him right then and there. She told him then and there she was willing to die from rejection, then to live another day in pain from his betrayal.
My father broke. My mother walked out and moved into a cottage on the pack grounds. The pack was in shock and torn. Half of them supported my mom for standing up to my father and the other half felt she was wrong for not thinking about the needs of the pack. I was very proud of her actions.
“Mackenzi, I have loved your father since I knew what love was. We grew up together and when we found out we were mates, it all seemed perfect. We have been through ups and downs, but we supported each other. When I was attacked and the doctors said that it was little to no chance, I would have children again, I saw a change in your father. I dealt with it because I thought it was me, but I cannot do it anymore. No one deserves to be “loved” this way. When you find your mate, never allow him to make you feel less than you are worth, and you are worth more than everything.”
My dad was a mess. He begged, pleaded, and did everything in his power to win her back. It took over six months, but he courted her all over again. They dated like teenagers. I still remember how nervous both of them were when mom finally said yes to dinner with him after three months of telling him “no”.
Well, needless to say, the date was a success because I will never be able to get that s****l scene of them out of my head after having walked in on them that night in the greenhouse. I am sure that is the night my little brothers were created.
“Yes, mom I know. I will be back!” I say kissing her cheek.
“Good Kenzi, because I am ready to retire so to say.” My dad chuckles as he nuzzles my mother’s neck.
“Get a room you two,” I shout, running out the door. “Let’s go Jaxon.”
