CHAPTER 14 — The Night He Finally Let Her In
The kiss still lingered on her lips when Adrian pulled back—
not because he wanted to,
but because he needed air to steady himself.
Maya’s breath was warm and uneven against his cheek.
Her hands remained on the back of his neck, fingers tangled in his hair, like she wasn’t ready to let go.
And truthfully…
He didn’t want her to.
“Maya…” he said softly, voice rough from the kiss he’d tried so long to avoid.
She opened her eyes slowly, pupils blown wide, cheeks flushed, lips slightly swollen from him.
“Yes?”
He swallowed hard, thumb brushing her waist like he was memorizing the feel of her.
“I shouldn’t have kissed you.”
She stiffened.
But before she could pull away, he cupped her jaw gently, holding her still.
“But I’m not sorry,” he breathed.
“Not even a little.”
Her heart thudded, her breath catching in her throat.
“Then why—”
“Because,” he whispered, “I know exactly where this leads.”
She met his eyes—dark, intense, unguarded.
“And where does it lead?” she asked.
His voice dropped, low and honest:
“To me wanting you in ways I don’t know how to control.”
Heat rolled through her in a slow wave.
He stepped closer again, chest brushing hers, hands sliding to her hips with a firmness that made her knees threaten to give out.
“And I’ll warn you now,” he murmured, “I don’t do casual. Not with you. Not with what I feel.”
She placed her palms flat against his chest—feeling every heavy, uneven beat under her touch.
“Then stop pretending you don’t feel it,” she whispered.
Something in his face softened… broke… surrendered.
He leaned in to kiss her again—
a slow, breathtaking press of lips that felt like truth spilling into the air between them.
Maya melted into him, her hands gliding from his chest to his shoulders, pulling him closer.
His arms wrapped around her waist, holding her like she was the only steady thing in his world.
This kiss wasn’t rushed.
It wasn’t hungry.
It wasn’t desperate.
It was… intimate.
Too intimate.
When he finally pulled away, he pressed his forehead to hers again, breathing her in.
“You’re going to undo me,” he whispered.
“You’re already undone,” she breathed back.
He let out a soft, helpless laugh—the sound of a man who had stopped fighting himself and didn’t know what to do with the freedom.
“Come here,” he murmured gently, tugging her closer.
She slid into his arms effortlessly, her cheek against his chest, listening to his heartbeat—uneven, fast, real.
Adrian rested his chin on her hair, inhaling deeply.
They stood like that for a long moment—
two hearts learning the rhythm they had been afraid to feel.
When he finally spoke again, his voice was quieter, but somehow deeper.
“I’m not good at this,” he admitted.
“Letting someone close. Letting myself want something… someone.”
She tilted her head up.
“And yet… here you are.”
He brushed a strand of hair from her face.
“I don’t want to hurt you,” he said.
“You won’t.”
“You don’t know that.”
She touched his cheek softly—warm, reassuring, grounding.
“I know you,” she whispered.
His eyes softened in a way she had never seen before—like her words reached a place he kept hidden from everyone else.
He leaned in again, kissing her forehead, slower and more tender than any kiss he’d ever given her.
“Maya…”
“Hmm?”
“If you let me fall for you…”
He swallowed hard.
“I won’t know how to stop.”
She smiled—a slow, warm smile that melted him entirely.
“Good.”
He stared at her for a long heartbeat, chest rising and falling with something heavier than desire.
Then he took her hand—delicately, as if he didn’t trust his strength—and led her toward the couch near the fire.
“Come sit with me,” he said quietly.
“No running. No pretending. Just… us.”
She followed without hesitation, settling beside him.
He pulled her against his side, his arm around her shoulders.
She rested her head on him, feeling his heartbeat calm under her cheek.
For the first time…
Adrian let himself breathe.
Let himself want.
Let himself be hers.
And Maya knew—
This wasn’t just a spark anymore.
This wasn’t just temptation.
This was the beginning of something real.
Something deep.
Something he couldn’t take back.
Something she didn’t want him to.
The fire crackled softly beside them, but the heat between their bodies was warmer.
And as the night wrapped around them like a blanket, Maya whispered the truth neither of them wanted to hide anymore:
“You can fall, Adrian…
I’ll catch you.”
And he whispered back, voice trembling with surrender:
~“I already am.” CHAPTER 16 — The Night He Let His Guard Fall
The storm outside had softened into a whisper,
but inside the cabin…
everything between them was louder than thunder.
Maya was still on his lap, her breath warm against his collarbone, her fingers curled lightly around the fabric of his sweater as if anchoring herself to the moment.
Adrian hadn’t moved either.
His arms were wrapped around her, steady and protective — the kind of embrace that didn’t ask questions or demand clarity.
It just was.
Deep.
Real.
Unavoidable.
He exhaled slowly, brushing his nose against her temple, his voice vibrating into her skin.
“Maya… you don’t know what you’re doing to me.”
She smiled softly against his neck.
“What if I do?”
He froze for half a heartbeat — not out of fear, but because her words hit the exact place he’d been trying to guard.
“Maya,” he whispered again, voice low, almost pleading, “I don’t want to hurt you. And wanting you this much… it scares me.”
She pulled back just enough to see his face.
The firelight carved shadows over his features — making his eyes darker, his jaw sharper, his vulnerability startlingly visible.
“Then don’t hurt me,” she said gently.
“Just be honest with me.”
He swallowed.
For a man who lived by control, this moment was a c***k in his armor.
“Maya… I’ve spent years keeping people at a distance. All my life. And with you—”
He looked away briefly, jaw tightening.
“With you, everything feels too close. Too intense.”
Her hand rested over his heart.
“And yet you’re still holding me.”
His grip tightened — unconsciously, instinctively.
“I can’t let go,” he admitted, his voice barely a breath.
A warmth spread through her chest, slow and deep.
She leaned in, her forehead brushing his.
“You don’t have to,” she whispered.
He kissed her again — not with hunger this time, but with something quieter, deeper.
A confession.
A surrender.
A form of truth even he didn’t have the words for.
Her fingers slid into his hair, and he let out a soft groan — the kind that slipped out only when someone touched a part of him he never showed the world.
“Maya…” he murmured against her lips, “I’m trying so hard not to fall.”
She smiled softly.
“Maybe you already have.”
He didn’t deny it.
He couldn’t.
He just pressed his forehead to hers, eyes closed, breathing her in like she was the only thing keeping him grounded.
She shifted slightly on his lap, and he inhaled sharply — the tension between them sparking again, that unmistakable pull tightening low and warm in both their bodies.
“Careful,” he whispered, voice hoarse.
She looked at him through her lashes.
“Why?”
His hand slid to her thigh — slow, deliberate, warning and wanting all at once.
“Because I don’t trust myself when you move like that.”
Heat curled in her stomach.
“Maybe I don’t want you to trust yourself.”
He laughed quietly — breathless this time.
“You really want to test me tonight.”
“Maybe.”
He held her hips gently, grounding her.
But his eyes…
his eyes were all fire.
“Maya,” he whispered, “I want you so much it feels like my body is fighting me.”
She brushed her lips across his jaw, the barest touch.
“Then why are you still fighting?”
His control slipped — visibly.
His hand slid up her thigh a little higher, his breath unsteady, his posture tense.
“I’m trying to be good,” he whispered.
She kissed the edge of his mouth — a soft, slow invitation.
“Then be good to me.”
He groaned — a low, deep sound she felt everywhere.
His restraint shattered.
He grabbed her face gently, his thumb brushing her lower lip, and kissed her with a hunger that made her gasp.
This wasn’t the controlled Adrian…
or the careful one…
or the cautious one.
This was the version of him he tried to keep buried —
the one who wanted
and felt
and needed.
He kissed her deeper, pulling her impossibly closer, his hands exploring with slow, reverent intensity.
“Maya…”
Her name came out like an exhale of desire he’d held back for too long.
“I don’t want this night to end.”
She pressed her forehead to his, breathing hard.
“Then make it last.”
And he did.
He held her closer, kissed her slower, touched her like she was something he’d been searching for without knowing it.
The snow outside kept falling.
The fire kept burning.
And for the first time in years…
Adrian wasn’t running from anything.
He was falling.
Deep.
Dangerous.
Deliciously uncontrollable.
