CHAPTER 12 — The Moment He Couldn’t Walk Away The cabin felt different after he stepped back from her… Not colder. Not safer. Just unbearably alive. Maya stood by the door, her hand on the wooden frame, her breath still tangled with the warmth of Adrian’s — even though he was now several steps away, staring at the floor like it held all the answers he was afraid to face. “Adrian,” she said softly. He didn’t look up at first. When he finally did, the storm in his eyes had changed — darker, deeper, rawer. Like something inside him had snapped loose and refused to go back in its cage. “I shouldn’t stay,” he said quietly. “Then why are you still here?” she whispered. That stopped him. He inhaled sharply — a slow, painful breath that trembled slightly on the exhale. “Maya…” Her name came out low, strained, reverberating with a hunger he couldn’t hide anymore. “You think I don’t feel this? You think I don’t want you? I’m dying trying not to touch you.” Her fingers curled against the doorframe. “Then don’t fight it.” He shook his head, jaw tight. “You don’t understand what happens when I stop fighting.” “Then explain it to me.” He stepped closer — one step, then another — not fast, not reckless, but deliberate, like every movement was a surrender he had avoided for too long. When he reached her, he placed one hand on the door beside her head, caging her without touching her. His voice dropped. “When I want someone… when I really want them… I don’t take small pieces, Maya.” Her breath caught. “I take all of them.” The words hit her like heat rolling down her spine. Her voice trembled but didn’t break. “What if I want you to?” He closed his eyes, pained and hungry all at once. “You don’t know what you’re saying.” “Yes, I do,” she breathed. “And I’m done pretending I don’t feel this.” He opened his eyes again — and for the first time, he didn’t hide. Not the desire. Not the fear. Not the pull toward her that was stronger than every rule he had set. His hand moved — slow, intentional — and he touched her waist with the gentlest pressure, like he was testing reality. Her whole body responded instantly. “Maya…” he whispered, voice rough now, “I can’t… not halfway. Not with you.” “Then don’t be halfway.” His forehead dropped to hers again — the third time, but different now. No restraint. Just yearning. He let out a broken breath. “You’re going to ruin me.” “Maybe,” she whispered, “or maybe I’m going to save you.” He pulled back just enough to look into her eyes — the closeness dizzying, intoxicating. Then, slowly… His hand slid from her waist to the small of her back. Not pulling her in — but claiming the space only he was allowed to touch. She inhaled sharply. Her knees weakened. “Adrian…” Her voice alone nearly undid him. Every part of him leaned toward her, like gravity itself had chosen sides. But instead of kissing her — instead of losing control — he whispered against her lips, barely a breath apart: “Say it.” Her chest rose violently. “Say what?” she said softly. “That you want this,” he murmured, “not because you’re lonely, not because it’s winter, not because I’m here… but because it’s me.” Her pulse thundered. She lifted her hand and placed it on his chest, right where his heart was beating too fast. “I want this,” she whispered, “because it’s you.” The sound he made — quiet, deep, almost a groan — was the sound of a man finally breaking. His hand at her back tightened. He leaned in— Not kissing. Not yet. But his lips brushed the corner of her mouth, slow, warm, devastating. “I won’t survive this,” he whispered. She turned her face toward his by a fraction. “You don’t have to survive it,” she breathed. “Just feel it.” He trembled — actually trembled — and for the first time since they met, he allowed himself to touch her fully. His other hand slid to her hip. Her body pressed lightly into his. Their breaths tangled, uneven, wanting. And this time… He didn’t step away. He didn’t hide. He didn’t fight. He let himself fall into the fire he’d been running from. The darkness hummed around them, warm and alive, as if the night itself leaned closer to listen. And Maya knew one thing with absolute certainty: There was no going back now. CHAPTER 13 — The First Touch He Couldn’t Take Back The air between them shifted— not subtly, not quietly, but like the world itself tilted to make room for the moment finally arriving. Adrian’s hands were still on her—one at her lower back, the other gripping her hip with a careful strength that made Maya’s breath stutter. He wasn’t kissing her. Not yet. But the way his body leaned into hers, the way his heartbeat pressed through his chest into her palm—it felt like the universe held its breath around them. “Adrian…” she whispered. He shook his head slightly, his forehead brushing hers. “No,” he murmured. “Don’t say my name like that.” “Like what?” “Like you’re asking me to lose control.” Her eyes softened, her lips parted. “I’m not asking.” He closed his eyes—and she felt it, that small surrender, that dangerous exhale that meant he wasn’t winning the battle anymore. His thumb traced a slow line along her hip. A movement so gentle it contradicted the storm behind his eyes. “Maya…” The way he said her name now—hoarse, low, hungry—made her knees weaken. She grabbed onto his jacket, steadying herself, but the moment she touched him, something inside him snapped. His hand slid upward, along her waist, fingers spreading across her ribs, exploring slowly—asking without words. She didn’t push him away. She didn’t hesitate. She stepped closer, letting her body meet his, soft curves against hard muscle, letting him feel everything she wasn’t saying. His breath caught—sharp and quiet—like her closeness hit him too hard. “I can’t let you do this,” he whispered. “Then stop me.” He didn’t. Not even for a heartbeat. Instead, his hand moved—slow, reverent—up her spine until his palm settled between her shoulder blades, holding her gently but firmly, like he was afraid she would disappear if he loosened even a little. “You don’t understand what I feel for you,” he said, voice breaking with honesty. “Then show me.” He exhaled a sound so quiet, so raw, she felt it between her ribs. “Maya…” He dipped his head, letting his lips brush the side of her neck—not a kiss, barely a touch, but enough to make her gasp. His hand tightened on her back. Her fingers curled in his jacket. Their breaths tangled. Their bodies aligned. Their restraint thinned to thread. “You’re killing me,” he whispered against her skin. “So stop fighting.” He lifted his head slowly, his nose brushing hers, their lips a breath apart—his control shaking, breaking, falling away piece by piece. “I’ve wanted to taste you,” he whispered, “since the first night you said my name.” Her lips trembled. “Then taste me.” His jaw clenched—hard—because those three words nearly undid him. He leaned in slowly… painfully slow… until his lips grazed hers. Not a kiss. Not yet. Just promise. A promise he couldn’t keep holding back. “Maya…” Her name left his lips like a confession. She slid her hand up his chest to the back of his neck, pulling him the last inch. And then— Finally— His mouth met hers. Not soft. Not hesitant. But deep, warm, claiming— a kiss that felt like a man losing a war he was never meant to win. Her breath hitched. His hand gripped her waist, pulling her closer. Their bodies pressed together, heat rising like flames licking through the cold winter air. He kissed her again—slower, deeper—like he’d been starving for this, for her, for the truth that neither of them could hide anymore. When he finally pulled back, his forehead stayed against hers, his breath ragged and warm. “This,” he whispered, “is the point of no return.” She smiled softly, fingertips brushing his cheek. “Good.” He let out a quiet, helpless laugh—broken and beautiful—before pulling her into another kiss, softer this time, but more dangerous than any fire. And with each breath, each touch, each trembling kiss… Adrian Hale stopped running. And Maya knew— This man wasn’t falling. He was already hers.
