A New Life

The kitten slowly climbed up her arm. Kate followed her father from the meeting room. Her thoughts were everywhere. She could feel Danika walking behind her. She was also confused. Danika wasn’t sure where she fit in. Her father’s mind was unusually calm. He had a way of stilling his mind and thinking deep inside his mind. Any time he was really considering something, surface thoughts didn’t arise. This had always aggravated her. What good was reading minds if the person that controlled your life was a closed book when it mattered? She needed to break the silence. “Did you know the Grand Duke is a magua? He uses Psyche. He isn’t particularly skilled, but that is to be expected.” Her father literally stumbled over his feet. He turned his head to study her. Is she joking? He asked himself. “No, I have no reason to lie to you. They are also harboring a priestess. I didn’t get much from them, but if I am right, they will want to recruit me.” She added. “It makes sense. The king always keeps his brother near, and he always seems to be a step ahead of everyone. He also has a way of convincing people to follow his lead.” Danika stated. “As for the priestess, Major Jron would know about her. He warned me away from certain research. I don’t think he knew that my line of questioning was about you.” Kate sighed. Part of her was glad that other people with abilities would be around, but it would complicate an already complex situation. They reached the port. Her father’s flier opened its doors as they approached. She stepped into the exquisite flier and chose a leather seat in the second of three rows of seats. She assumed that her father would take the pilot’s seat and Danika would be next to them. “Father, I don’t wish to go home. I want to go to the cabin.” She said as the doors to the flier rotated down. Her father’s chair rotated around to face her. “How do…never-mind. It has been years since I’ve gone there. It will be a mess.” She shook her head. “I’ve kept it for mother’s sake. I also had fresh supplies sent to it.” She looked down at the kitten and a small case formed for it complete with a drinking bottle. “The seclusion of the lake and cabin will make it safer for me to demonstrate what I am. Besides, it all started there.” For a moment, her father said nothing, then he nodded. “Zara, take us to the cabin.” The flier rose from the port floor and flew towards the exit.
