The forest was eerily quiet after Dain’s fall. The remaining hunters had scattered, their confidence shattered by the loss of their Alpha. Elara stood at the edge of the ravine, her breath still ragged from the fight. The adrenaline that had kept her moving was fading, leaving her limbs heavy and her mind racing. She could feel the weight of Kael’s gaze on her back, his presence like a physical force.
She turned to face him, her chin lifted despite the exhaustion pulling at her. Kael was a sight to behold—bloodied, battered, but alive. His crimson eyes burned with an intensity she hadn’t seen in months. Not since before the rejection.
He stepped closer, his voice low and rough. "You’re hurt."
Elara glanced down at the shallow gash on her arm, the blood already clotting. "It’s nothing."
Kael’s jaw tightened. "It’s not nothing. You could have been killed."
Elara met his gaze, her voice steady. "But I wasn’t."
Kael’s hands clenched at his sides, as if he were fighting the urge to reach for her. "Elara, we need to talk."
She crossed her arms, her dagger still clutched in one hand. "About what, Kael? The fact that you rejected me? The fact that you hunted me down like prey? Or the fact that you only seem to care now that Dain wants what’s yours?"
Kael flinched, as if her words had struck him physically. "It’s not like that."
"Then what is it like?" Elara demanded, her voice rising. "Because from where I’m standing, it looks like you only want me back because I’m carrying your heir. Not because you actually want me."
Kael’s expression darkened, his voice a growl. "You think I don’t want you? After everything?"
Elara’s heart pounded, but she didn’t back down. "I think you made your choice, Kael. And I made mine."
Kael stepped even closer, his voice dropping to a whisper. "And what choice is that, Elara? To run forever? To hide in the Free Lands with rogues who don’t know the first thing about protecting you?"
Elara’s grip tightened on her dagger. "I’ve done just fine on my own."
Kael’s eyes flicked to her stomach, then back to her face. "And what about our child? Do you really think you can keep them safe on your own?"
Elara’s breath hitched. She had known this moment would come. Had known that Kael would eventually find out about the pregnancy. But hearing him say it aloud, seeing the raw emotion in his eyes, made it feel real in a way it hadn’t before.
She swallowed hard, her voice quieter now. "I’ll do whatever it takes to keep them safe. Even if that means keeping them away from you."
Kael’s expression was a mix of pain and determination. "Elara, please. Let me help you. Let me protect you."
Elara wanted to believe him. Wanted to trust that he had changed, that he truly cared. But the memory of his rejection was still too fresh, the pain too raw.
Before she could respond, a rustling in the underbrush made them both tense. Lena emerged from the trees, her expression grim. "We’ve got a problem."
Elara turned to her, her heart sinking. "What now?"
Lena’s gaze flicked to Kael, then back to Elara. "Dain’s hunters are regrouping. And they’ve got a new leader."
Kael’s eyes narrowed. "Who?"
Lena’s voice was low. "Someone you know, Kael. Your brother."
Elara’s breath caught. Kael had a brother? And he was working with Dain?
Kael’s expression was a mask of shock and betrayal. "That’s impossible. Elias would never..."
Lena shook her head. "He’s here. And he’s not alone. He’s got a dozen hunters with him, and they’re heading this way."
Kael’s jaw clenched, his voice a growl. "Then we prepare for another fight."
Elara looked between Kael and Lena, her mind racing. This changed everything. If Kael’s own brother was working with Dain, then the threat was even greater than they had realized.
She turned to Kael, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside her. "We need a plan. And we need it fast."
Kael nodded, his eyes locked onto hers. For the first time since she had seen him, she saw something in his gaze that gave her hope. Determination. Loyalty. Love.
But there was no time to dwell on it. The hunters were coming. And they were ready for a fight.
