Chapter Twelve: The Battle Begins

912 Words
The first of Dain’s hunters emerged from the forest like shadows given form. Their crimson armor glinted under the midday sun as they fanned out, surrounding the camp. Kael stood at the front, his claws already unsheathed, his crimson eyes locked onto the approaching warriors. The air smelled of blood and pine, the tension thick enough to choke on. Riven moved to Kael’s side, his voice low. "We’re outnumbered three to one." Kael didn’t flinch. "Then we make every strike count." The first hunter lunged. Kael met him midair, their bodies crashing to the ground in a tangle of limbs and steel. Kael’s claws tore through the hunter’s armor, the warrior’s scream cutting short as Kael drove his fist into his throat. He rolled to his feet, blood dripping from his knuckles, just as the next hunter charged. Elara watched from the edge of the camp, her dagger clutched tightly in her hand. She could feel the weight of the rogues’ eyes on her, their fear and determination mingling in the air. Lena stood beside her, her knife gleaming in the sunlight. "Stay behind me," Lena said, her voice steady. "And don’t die." Elara nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. She had never been in a battle like this before, but she couldn’t afford to falter. Not when her child’s life was at stake. A hunter broke through the line, his blade aimed straight for Lena. Elara didn’t think. She stepped in front of Lena, her dagger clashing against the hunter’s sword. The force of the blow sent a jolt up her arm, but she held her ground, driving her dagger into the hunter’s side. He staggered back, his eyes wide with shock, before collapsing to the ground. Lena shot her a grateful look, then turned back to the battle. "Not bad for a Luna." Elara didn’t have time to respond. Another hunter was already coming for her, his blade raised high. She ducked, the blade whistling over her head, and drove her dagger into his thigh. He howled in pain, but she didn’t stop. She couldn’t. Not when the camp was depending on her. Kael fought like a storm through the hunters, his movements a blur of speed and precision. Riven was at his side, their backs to each other as they took down hunter after hunter. But for every one that fell, two more seemed to take their place. The camp was holding, but barely. Elara could feel the battle turning against them. The hunters were too many, too relentless. And then she saw it—the moment the tide shifted. A hunter broke through the line, his blade aimed straight for Kael’s back. "Kael!" she screamed. Kael turned just in time, his claws tearing through the hunter’s chest. But the distraction had cost him. Another hunter lunged, his blade grazing Kael’s side. Kael snarled, driving his fist into the hunter’s face, but the damage was done. Blood seeped through his shirt, staining the fabric crimson. Elara’s heart lurched. She couldn’t lose him. Not now. Not when they were so close to ending this. She pushed forward, her dagger flashing as she cut down another hunter. The camp was a chaos of snarls and steel, the ground slick with blood. But she could see the end in sight. The hunters were falling back, retreating into the forest. For a moment, she thought they had won. But then a voice cut through the silence, smooth and mocking. "Impressive. But this is only the beginning." Elara’s blood ran cold. Dain. He stepped out from the trees, his crimson armor gleaming, his yellow gold eyes locked onto Elara. Behind him, a dozen more hunters emerged, their weapons drawn, their eyes gleaming with bloodlust. Dain smiled, a slow, cruel thing. "Did you really think it would be that easy, Kael? You’ve always been too sentimental for your own good." Kael stepped forward, his voice a growl. "This doesn’t concern you, Dain. Walk away." Dain laughed, the sound echoing through the forest. "Oh, but it does. You see, Elara is carrying something very precious. Something I want. And I always get what I want." Elara’s hand went to her stomach, her heart pounding. She had known this moment would come. Had known that Dain wouldn’t stop until he had her. Until he had her child. Kael’s eyes flicked to Elara, then back to Dain. His voice was low, deadly. "She’s not yours to take." Dain’s smile widened. "We’ll see about that." The hunters charged again, and the battle erupted anew. But this time, Elara knew it wouldn’t be so easy. This time, Dain was here. And he wasn’t leaving without a fight. Lena moved to Elara’s side, her voice urgent. "We need to fall back. Regroup." Elara shook her head. "We can’t. Not with Dain here." Lena’s grip tightened on her knife. "Then we fight. But we fight smart." Elara nodded, her eyes scanning the battlefield. Kael and Riven were holding their own, but they were tiring. The rogues were battered but determined. And Dain was watching, waiting for his moment to strike. She took a deep breath, her mind racing. They needed a plan. Needed a way to turn the tide. And then it came to her. She turned to Lena, her voice steady. "Distract Dain. Keep him focused on you." Lena raised an eyebrow. "And what are you going to do?" Elara’s lips curled into a smile, fierce and determined. "End this."
