Chapter Five: The Hunt Begins

1300 Words
The cave was damp and cold, the air thick with the scent of earth and stone. Elara sat with her back against the rough wall, her knees drawn up to her chest. The darkness was both a comfort and a torment, hiding her from Kael’s warriors but also trapping her with her thoughts. She could still hear the echoes of their voices outside, the sharp commands and the crunch of boots on the forest floor. They were close. Too close. Mara crouched near the cave’s entrance, her ears pricked for any sound of danger. She had been a lifeline to Elara these past few days, a steady presence in the chaos of her new life. But even Mara’s calm couldn’t ease the knot of fear in Elara’s stomach. "You think they’ll find us?" Elara asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Mara didn’t look back. "Not if we stay quiet. They’re not trackers. Just warriors looking for a trail." Elara nodded, though the reassurance did little to calm her racing heart. She thought of Kael, of the way he had looked at her when he rejected her. There had been something in his eyes, something beyond the cold dismissal. Regret, maybe. Or guilt. But it didn’t matter. He had made his choice, and now he was hunting her like prey. A rustling outside the cave made her tense. Mara went still, her hand reaching for the dagger at her belt. The sound came again, closer this time. Elara’s breath hitched, her fingers digging into her knees. Then, a voice cut through the silence. "She’s here. I can smell her." Elara’s blood ran cold. That voice. She knew it. Riven, Kael’s beta. The one who had stood beside him when he cast her out. Mara turned to her, her eyes wide with urgency. "We need to move. Now." Elara didn’t argue. She stood, her movements silent, and followed Mara deeper into the cave. The tunnel narrowed, the darkness pressing in around them. Elara’s wolf stirred inside her, her instincts screaming at her to run, to fight. But she couldn’t. Not yet. Not when she was carrying Kael’s heir. They moved quickly, the cave twisting and turning until the voices of the warriors faded into the distance. Mara finally stopped, pressing a hand to her chest as she caught her breath. "They’re gone," she said, her voice low. "For now." Elara exhaled, her body trembling with adrenaline. She couldn’t keep running like this. She needed a plan, a way to disappear for good. Mara turned to her, her expression serious. "We need to get you out of here. Somewhere Kael won’t think to look." Elara nodded. "Where?" Mara hesitated, then met her gaze. "There’s a village to the east. Human. They don’t ask questions, and they don’t care about pack politics. You can hide there until this blows over." Elara’s stomach twisted. A human village? It was risky. Humans were unpredictable, and if they found out what she was... "It’s our best option," Mara said, as if reading her thoughts. "You won’t be safe here. Not with Kael’s warriors searching for you." Elara closed her eyes, her mind racing. She didn’t have a choice. She couldn’t stay here, and she couldn’t go back to Blackthorn. The village was her only option. "Fine," she said, opening her eyes. "We leave at first light." Mara nodded, then turned and began moving deeper into the cave. Elara followed, her steps careful and quiet. The darkness pressed in around her, but she pushed through it, her determination hardening with every step. She would survive this. She would protect her child. And if Kael tried to stop her, she would fight back. Because she wasn’t just a rogue anymore. She was a mother. And that changed everything. The next morning, Elara and Mara slipped out of the cave under the cover of dawn. The forest was quiet, the only sounds the rustling of leaves and the distant call of birds. Elara moved carefully, her senses sharp for any sign of danger. Kael’s warriors could still be out there, and she couldn’t afford to be caught. Mara led the way, her steps sure and silent. She had been to the human village before, she said, and knew the safest route. Elara followed, her hand resting on the dagger at her belt. She had never been to a human settlement, had never needed to. But now, it was her only hope. They walked for hours, the forest thinning as they neared the village. The scent of smoke and cooking food filled the air, and Elara’s stomach twisted with nerves. Humans were dangerous. They feared what they didn’t understand, and if they found out what she was... Mara turned to her, her expression serious. "Remember, no shifting. No using your wolf. Humans don’t take kindly to our kind." Elara nodded. "I know." Mara studied her for a moment, then reached into her satchel and pulled out a small vial. "Drink this. It’ll mask your scent." Elara took the vial, her fingers brushing against the cool glass. "What is it?" "Herbs," Mara said. "It won’t last long, but it’ll be enough to get you into the village." Elara didn’t hesitate. She uncorked the vial and drank the bitter liquid, her throat burning as it went down. The effect was immediate, her scent dulling to something more human, less wolf. "Good," Mara said, nodding. "Now, follow my lead. And don’t speak unless you have to." Elara nodded again, her heart pounding in her chest. She could do this. She had to. They stepped out of the forest and into the village, the change in scenery jarring. The buildings were small and close together, the streets bustling with activity. Humans moved about their business, their voices a constant hum in the air. Elara kept her head down, her cloak pulled tight around her. Mara led her to a small inn at the edge of the village, its sign swinging gently in the breeze. Inside, the air was warm and thick with the scent of food and ale. Mara spoke to the innkeeper, a burly man with a thick beard, and he nodded, his gaze flicking to Elara before moving away. They were given a small room at the back of the inn, its walls thin and its floor creaking underfoot. Elara sat on the bed, her hands clenched in her lap. She could hear the sounds of the village outside, the laughter and the clatter of dishes. It was strange, being surrounded by humans. Unsettling. Mara sat across from her, her expression serious. "You’ll be safe here for a while. But you can’t stay forever. Kael will keep looking for you." Elara nodded. "I know." Mara studied her for a moment, then reached into her satchel again. This time, she pulled out a small pouch, its contents clinking softly. "Coins. Enough to get you by for a few weeks." Elara took the pouch, her fingers brushing against the cool metal. "Thank you." Mara smiled, though it didn’t reach her eyes. "You’re welcome. But remember, you’re not safe yet. Kael won’t stop until he finds you. And if he does..." Elara’s jaw tightened. "He won’t." Mara nodded, then stood. "I’ll be back in a few days. Stay hidden. Stay safe." Elara watched as Mara left the room, the door clicking shut behind her. She was alone now, in a place she didn’t know, surrounded by people who didn’t know what she was. It was dangerous. But it was also her only hope. She would stay here, stay hidden, until she could find a way to disappear for good. Because if Kael found her, she wouldn’t just lose her freedom. She would lose her child. And that was a risk she couldn’t afford to take.
