The next morning, the weight of everything that had unfolded the day before hung heavily on Alex’s shoulders. The drive back to her hometown was long and silent. Max insisted on accompanying her despite the ongoing investigation. He wasn’t officially detained yet, and he wanted to support her through her father’s illness.
As they pulled up to the hospital, Alex’s hands trembled. The sterile scent, the muted beeps of monitors, and the hushed conversations all became a blur. Her mother rushed to embrace her, eyes swollen from crying.
“He’s stable now,” she whispered. “But they need to run more tests.”
Alex nodded, tears threatening to fall. She peeked into the ward and saw her father lying pale and motionless. The strong, unshakable man who’d always seemed invincible now looked fragile.
Max waited respectfully outside the room, giving her space.
Later, as the sun began to set, Alex found herself sitting beside Max in the hospital courtyard, her head on his shoulder.
“I feel like I’m being pulled in every direction,” she murmured. “School, my dad, you… I don’t even know how to be there for myself anymore.”
Max was quiet for a moment before replying. “You don’t have to carry it all alone, Alex. I know we’ve only just started… whatever this is… but I’m here. For as long as you want me.”
His words, simple yet sincere, brought unexpected comfort.
Back at the university, rumors about Max’s alleged involvement were spiraling out of control. Students whispered in the halls, avoiding eye contact. A few even unfollowed Alex on social media.
Stacy called one night, her voice low and serious. “Alex, I believe Max is innocent, but people are starting to talk. You might want to distance yourself… just for now.”
Alex’s throat tightened. “I can’t do that, Stacy. He’s being framed, and if I abandon him, I’m no better than the people who don’t care about the truth.”
“You’re right,” Stacy said after a pause. “I just don’t want you dragged down with him.”
Alex lay awake that night in her childhood bedroom, staring at the ceiling. Her world was no longer simple. Her choices weren’t just hers anymore — they rippled through everyone she cared about.
As she drifted to sleep, she made a silent promise:
She would fight for her father’s recovery.
She would help prove Max’s innocence.
And most importantly, she would stay true to herself — no matter the cost.
