Alex woke up the next morning with a smile tugging at her lips. Last night’s kiss still lingered in her thoughts, replaying in slow motion. Her fingers brushed her lips as if trying to relive the moment. It was official — something real was unfolding between her and Max.
She glanced at her phone. *Good morning, sunshine ☀️. Hope you slept well. I miss you already.*
Max.
Her heart fluttered. It felt so easy with him — almost too easy. And that scared her a little.
At lunch, Stacy noticed her dreamy expression. “You look like someone who’s been kissed into another dimension.”
Alex chuckled. “Maybe I have.”
“I’m happy for you,” Stacy said, pausing. “Just… don’t lose yourself, okay?”
Alex frowned. “What do you mean?”
“I just mean, don’t let the sparkle blind you. Max is great, but remember who you are.”
Alex nodded, but Stacy’s words stayed with her.
Later that evening, Max invited her to dinner at a rooftop restaurant in the city. The view was breathtaking — the skyline painted in gold and amber as the sun dipped below the horizon. A violinist played softly in the background.
“You planned all this?” she asked, genuinely touched.
“I wanted to give you something special,” he said. “You deserve it.”
As they ate, Alex noticed subtle things she hadn’t before — Max’s phone vibrating constantly, the way his smile flickered when he thought she wasn’t looking, the sharp look he gave a man at a nearby table who nodded at him briefly.
“Is everything okay?” she asked softly.
Max met her gaze, hesitating. “Yeah. Just… work things. Nothing to worry about.”
But Alex couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to Max than he let on — a part of his world she hadn’t seen yet.
When they said goodnight, Max kissed her forehead and held her a second longer. “Just promise me something,” he said.
“What?”
“Whatever happens… don’t stop trusting me.”
Alex smiled, but inside, something unsettled stirred in her chest.
She didn’t know what Max meant.
But she had a feeling that the sparkle she loved so much… might have a shadow behind it.
