The next morning began like any other day for Emma.
Sunlight filtered softly through the curtains of their small apartment. The smell of freshly brewed coffee filled the kitchen while Emma prepared Lucas’s breakfast.
“Mommy, I don’t want cereal again,” Lucas complained, pushing the bowl away dramatically.
Emma sighed.
“You said that yesterday too.”
Lucas leaned back in his chair with a serious expression.
“Because it’s still cereal.”
Emma tried not to laugh.
“Eat first. Complaints later.”
Lucas finally took a reluctant bite.
Despite the playful moment, Emma’s thoughts were far away.
She hadn’t been able to sleep properly the night before.
Seeing Alexander again had reopened wounds she believed had healed long ago.
She kept replaying the moment in her mind.
The way he had looked at Lucas.
Had he suspected something?
Emma shook the thought away.
No. That was impossible.
Lucas suddenly spoke again.
“Mommy, are you going to work today?”
Emma nodded.
“Yes. We have an important meeting.”
Lucas brightened.
“Does that mean we can get pizza tonight?”
Emma raised an eyebrow.
“Your entire life seems to revolve around food.”
Lucas grinned proudly.
“Because food is important.”
Emma laughed softly and kissed his forehead.
“Finish your breakfast.”
••
Later that morning, Emma arrived at the Carson Atelier studio.
The small office was buzzing with energy. Employees moved between sewing tables, sketch boards, and fabric samples.
Her assistant, Mia, rushed toward her the moment she walked in.
“Emma, there’s something you need to see.”
Emma frowned slightly.
“What happened?”
Mia handed her a tablet.
“It’s an email from a corporate investor.”
Emma looked down at the screen.
The sender's name made her heart skip.
Hale Group.
Her fingers suddenly felt cold.
“Is this… real?” Mia asked excitedly. “Hale Group is one of the biggest international companies. If they invest in us, the brand could explode.”
Emma barely heard the rest of her words.
Hale Group.
There was only one man behind that empire.
Alexander Hale.
Emma slowly opened the email.
The message was short and formal.
Hale Group expressed interest in evaluating Carson Atelier as a potential investment partner. They requested a meeting within the next forty-eight hours.
Emma stared at the screen.
So this was not a coincidence.
Alexander had recognized her.
And now he was coming.
Mia was still talking enthusiastically.
“This is huge for us, Emma. We can’t miss this opportunity.”
Emma forced herself to breathe calmly.
“Yes,” she said quietly.
“You’re going to accept, right?” Mia asked.
Emma looked around the studio.
The employees who trusted her.
The company she had built with years of hard work.
This opportunity could change everything.
But it also meant facing the one man she had tried to avoid for five years.
Emma finally nodded.
“Schedule the meeting.”
Mia nearly jumped with excitement.
“I’ll reply to them immediately!”
Emma watched as she hurried away.
Her hands slowly tightened into fists.
Alexander Hale wanted a meeting.
Fine.
She would give him one.
But this time, things would be different.
She was no longer the woman he had once abandoned.
••
Meanwhile, on the top floor of the Grand Regent Hotel, Alexander sat by the window overlooking the city skyline.
Daniel stood beside the table with his tablet.
“The meeting request has been sent to Carson Atelier,” he reported.
Alexander nodded slightly.
“Good.”
Daniel hesitated before continuing.
“There’s something else you should know.”
Alexander looked up.
“What is it?”
Daniel turned the tablet so Alexander could see the screen.
It displayed surveillance photos from the previous evening.
Emma leaves the ice cream shop.
Lucas walked beside her.
Alexander studied the image again.
That same boy.
Daniel spoke carefully.
“Our investigators say Emma Carson lives alone with the child.”
Alexander’s expression remained calm.
“But?”
Daniel hesitated.
“No record of the child’s father.”
Silence filled the room.
Alexander leaned back slowly.
His mind replayed Lucas’s face again.
Five years old.
Bright eyes.
Sharp expression.
Something deep in his instincts refused to let the thought go.
Alexander closed the tablet.
“Prepare for the meeting tomorrow.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes, sir.”
But as he walked away, Alexander remained staring at the city.
Somewhere out there, Emma Carson was preparing to meet him again.
Neither of them knew it yet —
but the truth standing between them was far bigger than either of them imagined.
And the moment that truth surfaced…
everything would change.
