A Secret Goodbye

757 Words
Emma barely slept that night. The rain had stopped sometime before dawn, but the silence that followed felt heavier than the storm itself. The once warm bedroom now felt cold and unfamiliar. She sat at the edge of the bed, the medical report still resting in her hands. Pregnant. The word felt both miraculous and terrifying. Emma placed her palm gently over her stomach again, as if trying to protect the tiny life growing inside her. “I’ll be strong for you,” she whispered softly. Downstairs, she could hear faint sounds. Servants moving quietly. The distant hum of cars passing outside the mansion gates. Alexander had already left. That realization made something twist painfully inside her chest. Not even a goodbye. Emma closed her eyes briefly, forcing herself to stay calm. Crying wouldn’t change anything now. Their marriage was over. Slowly, she stood up and began packing her suitcase. She didn’t take much. A few clothes. Some personal belongings. The photograph from their wedding day. For a moment she stared at it. Alexander was smiling in that picture. Genuinely smiling. It felt like a memory from another lifetime. Emma carefully placed the photo into her bag. When she finally walked downstairs, the mansion felt strangely empty. The housekeeper looked surprised to see her with luggage. “Madam… are you going somewhere?” Emma forced a polite smile. “Yes. I’m leaving for a while.” The older woman looked concerned but didn’t ask more questions. Emma stepped outside. The early morning air was cool and fresh after the rain. A taxi waited at the gate, its engine quietly running. Before getting inside, Emma turned to look at the mansion one last time. She had entered this house as Alexander’s wife. She was leaving it alone. Emma took a deep breath and climbed into the taxi. “Airport, please,” she told the driver. The car slowly pulled away from the gates of Hale Mansion. Emma didn’t look back again. •• Across the city, inside the towering Hale Group headquarters, Alexander Hale stood by the floor-to-ceiling window of his office. From the fifty-second floor, the city stretched endlessly below him. His assistant, Daniel Brooks, entered quietly. “The divorce documents have been finalized, Mr. Hale.” Alexander nodded once. “Good.” Daniel hesitated before continuing. “Mrs. Hale left the mansion this morning.” Alexander’s eyes flickered slightly. “Where did she go?” “We’re not sure yet.” For a moment, Alexander said nothing. Then he turned back toward the window. “It doesn’t matter.” Daniel studied his boss carefully. “Should we stop tracking her financial accounts?” Alexander’s voice was calm. “Yes.” Another pause followed. Then Daniel asked cautiously, “Do you want me to arrange a statement for the media?” “No.” Alexander walked toward his desk and opened a file, clearly ending the conversation. “Just say it was a mutual decision.” Daniel nodded. “Understood.” But as he turned to leave, he couldn’t help noticing something unusual. Alexander hadn’t looked at the divorce documents even once since signing them. •• Meanwhile, the taxi carrying Emma drove steadily toward the airport. She leaned her head against the window, watching the city blur past. Every corner held memories. The café where Alexander had first taken her on a date. The park where he had proposed. The restaurant where they had celebrated their first anniversary. All of it felt distant now. Emma tightened her grip on her bag. Inside it was the medical report. And the tiny ultrasound photo the doctor had given her. She took it out carefully. A small, blurry shape appeared on the image. But to Emma, it meant everything. “You’re not alone,” she whispered. A tear slipped down her cheek. “But your father… will never know.” The taxi finally reached the airport terminal. Emma paid the driver and stepped out. The morning sun had begun to rise, casting golden light across the runway. It felt like the start of a new life. A difficult one. But hers. Emma walked toward the departure gates without hesitation. Behind her, the city she once called home slowly disappeared into the distance. She didn’t know when – or if – she would ever return. What Emma didn’t realize was that the man she had just left behind would spend the next five years trying to forget her. And failing. Because of some mistakes… refused to stay buried forever. ●
