*Ariella*
I finally got a few hours of sleep while curled up in Gabriel’s arms… I knew it wouldn’t be the best for weakening our bond, but the lack of decent sleep was driving me crazy… I needed something to help me sleep, or I’d just end up getting weaker and weaker and I knew that wasn’t good for me or the baby.
Miss Anna picked me up at 6am sharp before the pack house woke up. She dropped me off with a big Tupperware bowl of sausage gumbo and for once in a few days I was actually excited to eat. I scarfed down a big bowl, took a shower and managed to doze off to the morning news for a few hours.
I woke up at about 10 and pulled a chocolate bar from the little stockpile Melany had gotten for me. I sat on the bed and flipped through channels, landing on cartoons. I flipped open my drawing pad I had stuffed into my bag when we headed back to get Melany and began blankly sketching with a soft pencil as I listened to the cartoons play.
My phone rang after about half an hour of giggling at a silly cartoon.
“Morning Kiddo.”
“Morning!
“How did you sleep?” He asked.
“Actually…” I paused, a small grin on my face. “I slept okay.”
“Good I’m glad.”
“How are things there?” I asked.
“Good, things are holding up, Carter left a few hours ago. Louis is watching over the training today for me while I finish up some paperwork.”
“Sorry I can’t be there to help…”
“It’s not your fault Kiddo.”
“But still…”
I heard him sigh after a moment of silence. “I… was gonna have Carter tell you when he got there but…” he paused.
“Tell me what?” I asked.
“I got the mission completely canceled…” he said softly. “It was a tough fight… and our Client is Livid… but I explained there was a conflict of interest that would not allow us to continue. I didn't specify why…”
“Thank you Mason…” I breathed a sigh of relief. Knowing Gabriel would be safe made my heart flutter. My eyes fell on the little bracelet I still wore.
“Carter… said you really like this guy… he’s your fated mate… is… is that true?”
“It… is…” I whispered.
“I… don’t want to think that you’ll leave us… but… if… if you decide to… I will stand by you 100%…”
“No, Mason, I could never leave The Farm…”
“And, I wouldn’t normally allow this… but… your circumstances are different… if you decide to, I won't stop you…”
“Mason I…”
“You don’t need to decide now.” He interrupted. “You have 5 months before your pup is born… you have a lot of time to decide what you want to do… and like I said, I will stand by you with whatever decision… we all will.”
I sobbed at his words. “Thank you Mason, thank you so much…”
“You know I love you Kiddo… I’ll do whatever is best for you and your child… even if it’s not what I want for the Farm.”
“I love you too Mason… thank you…”
Carter was delayed coming back… a city halfway between here and The Farm was under intense flooding, blocking off the roads out. I’d be stuck another couple days without him still.
My chest itched with the want to contact Gabriel… I had the pack house number, I could easily call and talk to him, make sure he was okay… but at the same time how could I explain any of this to him…? Would he even believe me if I said I renounced the mission, even got it called off for him? How could I explain that his family killed my pack and another family secretly wanted him and his father killed as the only Alpha males fit for the pack… how would I explain that I wanted that mission to avenge the family I could hardly remember to begin with past the age of 9…
I sighed and my notebook fell onto the bed. I finally looked at it where my hand had sketched an almost perfect rendition of his smiling face. The itch in my chest turned to a burn, the mild relief of Mason telling me the mission was canceled only made way for the absolute terror I’d face by making the decision.
Either I let the bond break, and go back to the farm to raise my baby alone, a constant reminder of that man whose family had destroyed mine and then claimed my heart. Or I came clean about everything and risked being tried for treason, be executed by the Belford Family, have an all out war start between his pack and the Farm… Mason would fulfill the mission himself had anything happened to me… but did I want to risk his or any of the others' safety to clear my own conscience of the horrible plans I had in my head?
I dropped my head down and pushed the sketching away from me as a sob escaped my throat. I had no idea what I would do. I was terrified to face either direction and my heart started to palpate rapidly, an anxious feeling washing over me.
I clutched my hand at my chest as more tears spilled from my eyes. Sobbing and sniffling until my head hurt and my cheeks were flushed red and stained with salt. Snot ran down my cupids now and I wiped it with my hand before wiping it onto my leg. It dried in flakes and I shook my head, disgusted with myself before I stood and stripped his sweater off of myself and ran the shower.
I sat on the stone floor letting the rain of water soak my messy hair. Finally combing through it gently with my fingers to keep my mind occupied.
I must have sat for at least an hour before that feeling fully calmed in my chest and I was able to stop my desperate crying. All I wanted was to bury myself back into his sweater and sink into the oblivion that his presence gave me. It wasn’t the same as being right beside him, or being held by him. But it helped ease my heart just enough to fall back asleep for another few hours before I woke up to stare numbly at the ceiling. Then I returned to my unfinished sketch of Gabriel and began drawing again as his smile flashed through my head…
