Because I fell in Love...

*Ariella* “Drive faster…” I begged. “Really? The other day you said it made you sick?” “Well, apparently it wasn’t the driving…” I scoffed. I leaned back in my seat and felt my eyes roll. The scent of Gabriel wafted up to me. We had left so quick I just grabbed my same clothes that had still been crumpled in a pile on my floor. Including the grey sweater that I kept telling myself I’d burn when I got the chance… “There’s still time you know… we can pretend it didn’t even happen…” “No…” I responded quickly “I can’t…” “Just know… I won’t judge you for taking that route if you need…” I snorted in a sarcastic manner, “Full Moon will probably try me first treason if any of this gets out… I won’t even tell him…” “You can’t not tell him Ari… he can’t kill a pregnant woman…” Carter gave me an uncomfortable side glance and I shrugged. “If I just don’t tell him… we don’t worry about it…” “Ari…” Carter’s tone dropped into a scolding tempo. “You won’t abort it… but you’d let its father sentence you to death…” “Carter… I don’t believe in abortion… you know that… but if Gabriel finds out I was sent to murder him and his father he’s going to have me hung… and… I don’t want to risk Melany getting in trouble if anyone finds out.” “This… is so complicated Ari…” “I’d rather stop her now and have him kill me… then she doesn’t have to worry about the repercussions…” Carter sighed and shook his head, “I won’t let him kill you Ari… we will figure something out…” I didn’t respond. I just leaned my head into the window and let its coolness relax my queasy body. Mason has a set of incredibly important rules we all agreed to before we were allowed to join the Farm… amongst comradery and confidentiality… it was against the rules to commit any crime against a related person of any member of the farm, regardless of the reason, that included in-laws, siblings… the father of a member's child… Mason did extensive research before each job was accepted to assure no lines crossed… only once in my 10 years had I witnessed someone go against Masons fundemental rules… Carter and I watched that man be slaughtered… he made a lesson of him, and that was the one time I had ever seen Mason's eyes blacken, the first time Mason had ever terrified me and showed the true nature of an alpha of a mercenary group… “Ari…” Carter whispered, I had dozed off and was leaning on the window still. We were halfway there based on the town he had stopped in. It was a small town with a truck stop located on the very edge. “What…?” “Your stomachs growling… let’s get food…” “No, we have to get to Full Moon…” “Ari… you can’t skip meals now…” he urged. I glance down at my stomach before I wrapped my arm around myself. “You may not care if you die at this point, but I do… that pup is going to take a lot out of you…” “Like I said… I’ll be tried for treason before this pup can do anything to me.” He rolled his eyes. “Get out of the car Ari…” I rolled my eyes back, a low rumbling growl escaped my chest as I unlatched my seatbelt and dragged myself from the car, following Carter into the truck stop diner. My mouth watered at the idea of a Caramel roll. I never even liked sweets that much, but passing the little bakery window I practically slammed my face against the glass, drooling over the big tray of rolls, each about as big as my head it seemed. Orange juice and a caramel roll was the only thing I even wanted to eat. I shoveled forkfuls into my mouth, savoring the sweet, gooey, cinnamon pastry. Carter had a giant truckers breakfast, laid out in front of him. I snatched a piece of bacon from his plate as he put jelly on a piece of toast. He gave me a grin and shrugged slightly. “Ar…” he started. “Yeah?” I asked with a mouth full of caramel topping. “Why are you so worried about Melany completing the job…” I c****d my head to the side as I swallowed. “I just… don’t want her getting in trouble…” “You told me once you could care less about her…” he reminded me. I shrugged and took another bite, trying to ignore the question. “I just… don’t want anyone else getting hurt that doesn’t need to…” “This isn’t about Melany is it…?” “What? No…” “It’s not… you don’t care about Melany… you’re worried about him… aren’t you? you’re still wearing his sweater…” “N-no…” I stuttered. My face heating with embarrassment as I looked down at my abdomen. He sighed and dropped his eyes down to his plate, his fork pausing his quick shoveling. “I met Louis on a job… his cousin was my target… I tapped out of the mission and someone else completed it… after extraction I couldn’t stay away and I tracked him down…” “What? You told me you guys met in a coffee shop…” “I had to… or Mason would have my head…” he responded, “We’ve kept that secret to ourselves for 3 years now…” “So… you tapped out… because you fell in love…” He nodded, “it’s different for me… ya know, what with being guys and all… but… what I’m trying to tell you is… we’ve all done things against the rules… Mason doesn’t need to know it’s The Alphas… we could go to a clinic and it could be done with… there’s a lot of choices we have… but I won’t let you run in there and be murdered by him if he finds out who you really are… you’re too young to throw yourself away for some crush you have on this guy…” I smiled, “Mason always told me… that if I wanted to be in this group… then the potential of being killed was always a looming threat… I’ve always known it was a possibility once I got to the field…” “It’s not your time Ari… I’m not letting that f**k kill you off…” “I appreciate you Carter… but let me be chivalrous and save Melany without being big brother Carter.” “I can’t help it.” He shrugged, “I’ll always be your Big Brother Carter.” He stuck his tongue out at me before scoping eggs into his mouth. “And I’ll be Uncle Carter here soon!” He teased with a wink.
