*Gabriel*
“Gabe? Gabe!?” The voice seemed far off, distant. I was delirious, nauseous, disoriented. I could feel the carpet beneath my face rub into my back as I was shaken. “Gabe!”
My eyes fluttered open. Esen looked between my eyes, tapping my cheek with his hand as I came to.
“He’s awake…” Beth seemed to say. “Yes please send EMS…”
“No.” I wheezed “No EMS…”
“Gabe, you fainted… you have to go to the hospital.” Esen started.
“NO!” I Roared. I clutched my head as it pounded at my own voice. “Call them off, Beth.” I ordered. And she nodded, unable to deny the order of her Alpha.
“Dude… you have to go-…”
“Find her…” I hissed, clutching onto Esens shirt collar and bunching it in my hand as I pulled him close to me, “Now…”
“I’ll update the guard…” he said, backing away from me. He pushed Beth from the room and the door closed, I heard them murmur outside the door as if I couldn’t hear them.
The word “rejected” whisking into my ears like a taunt…
She’d rejected me… as soon as she felt the mate bond snap into place… but something wasn’t right… she was hiding something, I felt it in the way she spoke…
I had to find out what it was before our connection was completely severed.
2 days passed, and I was miserable. My chest had ached for the last 48 hours, a desperate feeling overtook my mind, while nausea and muscle pains encompassed my body. My head throbbed, my heart ached… It caused my own body to be practically useless, it kept me from shifting, I couldn’t join the guard, my strength depleting so quickly with her rejection I felt like a newborn
Something was wrong… I could feel her… her desperation, her loneliness… it wasn’t right…
A growl ripped through my chest at a thought. Loneliness… wherever she was, she was alone… begging for contact with someone… and I couldn’t be the one to comfort her. I just prayed, wherever she was, that Carter had been taking care of her… keeping her safe until I could find her…
“Gabe…” the door to the office opened and Esen sighed. He peered at the half empty whisky bottle beside me… the second of its kind today. My glass was filled with the brown liquid… it was the only way to keep the ache at bay. Being sober felt almost debilitating… there were bags under my eyes, I had on pajama pants and a shirt with drips of whisky on the chest, my hair was unkempt. I was a complete and utter mess.
My hand hadn’t healed yet, that’s why Esen came… he brought our physician in who followed behind him with a small medical bag at his side.
“Alpha…” he began, I put a hand up to stop his voice, the sound making me want to cringe. He cleared his throat as I dropped my hand over the desk expectantly. Dr Richards was a stout, jolly looking man in his 60s, he’d been the physician for the pack house since before I was born.
“It’s been 48 hours Doc… why isn’t his hand healing?” Esen asked quietly as the doctor unwrapped gauze and medical tape from my right palm where it had been sliced open by the shattered vase Melody had knocked over.
“Well… that is perplexing isn’t it…”
I couldn’t help a frustrated growl escaping from my throat. The doctor swallowed nervously.
“You said your mate rejected you recently…?” He asked, opening his bag.
“What’s that got to do with it?” I snapped.
“Well…” he began, as he set my hand on a small plastic drop sheet and carefully began cleaning it with a burning alcohol rub. “The bonding of mates can become stronger with time… bond connections can strengthen even before realizing someone is your mate, or with a chosen mate… Take Esen and Miss Bethany for example…” he motioned to Esen who nodded. “They’ve been bonded for 5 years…”
“What does that have to do with my hand not healing…”
“Well, if memory serves… Your mate was in heat when she came to the packhouse, you two… connected quite quickly… and spent quite a bit of time together while she was here…” he paused as he put a yellow paste over my hand. I grimaced.
“On with it Richards.” I growled.
“Well… you’ve already secured a bond with her, well before she realized… now that she’s rejected you and left the area… your wolf has weakened, it’s why you can’t shift, it’s likely why you can’t sleep, it’s why you have been healing at a slow rate…”
“What is that…” Esen asked over his shoulder.
“Goldenrod…” he responded Intuitively as he looked over the brim of his glasses. “It should increase your healing, soothe the ache…” he wrapped a piece of tape around the gauze.
“Does it work on the heart…?” I sneered, a pathetic chuckle escaping me.
“Unfortunately Not, sir.” He responded, but as he said so he straightened his back and pulled his stethoscope over his ears. “Does your heart ache?” He asked.
I nodded with a roll of my eyes as I flexed my fingers. The ache did soothe a bit as the goldenrod paste soaked in. “Everything aches…”
“Breath in…” a pause as he listened to my chest, “Again…” as he moved to my back. “Once more…”
He let out a confused “hm” as he pulled the stethoscope down and pulled a small pen light from the breast pocket of his jacket. “Open…” I opened my mouth, he peered for a moment into my mouth, then brought the light to my eyes, flashing it quickly between each then holding the light in front of my face. “Follow…” he ordered. “Now focus on my finger…”
“Dr Richards…” I warned, becoming impatient.
“Well Sir…” he began as he tucked the pen light back into his pocket. I c****d an eyebrow at him as he pulled his notepad from his bag. “I believe you may be experiencing stress induced cardiomyopathy…”
“English, Doc…” I ordered.
“Well… in a nutshell, you have broken heart syndrome…” he started, “but I fear you may also be experiencing a lycan condition known as Emotional Bond Dependency…”
“What is that…”
“Well, it means you’ve bonded so deeply with this person, that you feel their emotions and the pain they experience and vice Versa, the further you are from each other the worse the pain will be…”
“How do I make it stop?”
“Well there’s a few options…” he speculated, “One would be to repair the connection… as long as it’s broken and she’s not here you will hurt…”
“I don’t know where she is… other options doc…”
“Second would be to accept her rejection and allow the bond to sever…”
“Not happening… what else…”
“The last option is to wait it out…”
“You mean just suffer through?”
He nodded. “A bond will die over time… it can take weeks, months… until the bond is severed or atleast weakened the symptoms will persist, the further you are from her the worse they will get… if she gets too far before the bond is weak enough it could kill one or the both of you…”
“How do I make the pain stop now…?”
“I can prescribe you pain meds… but it’s likely to cause some intense side effects on her as well…”
I shook my head “I can’t do that to her… if I feel this awful… there’s no telling how she is feeling… but I can’t drug myself now knowing she may feel it…”
“As if the alcohol was much different…” Esen snickered.
“I didn’t know!” I barked
“Hm, yes… a mild sedative may help you both sleep… if you’re up, likely so is she… you look like you could both use some sleep…”
I shook my head.
“Gabe… maybe you should at least tonight… you haven’t slept in almost a week… I think it would probably do both of you some good…” Esen offered.
“I can’t do that to her without her consent…”
“Alpha, I’d advise at least one night… as stated she likely can’t sleep either…”
I sighed as they pushed, chewing on my lower lip for a moment before leaning my head back and relenting. “Okay… just… for tonight…”
