“Ari…” Mason said over the speaker to us. “Your mission has… changed…”
“To?”
“Well… I was informed that Alpha Valerian is no longer in power due to his health… but your role is to take out the current standing Alpha of Full Moon, which would be Valerian's son, Gabriel…”
“Why him?”
“He’s the only Son of the family.” Mason responded, “The Goal of the client is to push the Belford Family from power… as long as there's no surviving male descendants then there is room for another family to step in…”
“Who wants this done? That seems like overkill…” Carter stepped in.
“You know I can’t tell you who our Clients are…” Mason said with a sigh.
“Yeah I know…” Carter responded, rolling his eyes.
“If Alpha Valerian is sick then he won’t be difficult to take out… and if the new Alpha is young and inexperienced he should be unsuspecting…”
Carter nodded in agreement “I can change our choice of weapons if you’d like…”
There was a pause as I mulled over the options.
“Well you guys decide. You’ll be extended on your assignment to accommodate two targets… Carter let me know if there’s a change to the plan and I’ll have supplies ready for you.”
“Yes sir.” There was another pause then I heard Mason sigh.
“Stay safe kids.”
“We will.” We said in unison before the phone hung up.
“A maid? Seriously?”
“House keeper.” Carter corrected dabbing his finger onto my nose with a smug look.
“I’m not cleaning his house.” I growled.
“It's a good in.” He shrugged, “They said they would accept non-pack members. Some EEO s**t…”
I rolled my eyes. “I’m not cleaning Valerains house.” I said more firmly than before.
“I already sent your resume so…”
“f***s sake Carter… I coulda just broke in.”
He shook his head then flipped me a copy of a resume.
Ella Marie Constance… head housekeeper at the private home of Gregory Mason 5 years…
I looked at him and scowled.
“If I can get you in here then it’ll get an easy in with little fight...”
Just then the phone in my bag began to ring. It was an unknown number, anyone important was saved under names I could recognize.
“Hello.”
“Hi, may I speak with Ella Constance?”
I rolled my eyes to Carter as I responded “This is Ella.”
“Hi Ella, my name is Beth, I’m calling about the resume you submitted to the housekeeping position at Belford Manor.”
“Oh yes, good morning ma’am.”
She let out a small laugh, “Good morning. I’d like to meet you for an interview.”
“Okay, I am free at any time.”
“Would you want to come in about 2 hours?”
“Oh sure!”
“I know it’s last minute but we are trying to find candidates soon.”
“That’s perfectly fine! I can be there in two hours.”
“Perfect! See you then!”
“I f*****g hate you.” I gritted my teeth at Carter, but he grinned a bright while smile at me as I turned to dress in whatever I had that was presentable.
“Got you in, didn’t it?”
“You’re right…” I said handing him the paper with the offer. Decent pay, boarding, basic meals paid for…
Beth had invited me back to the pack house and ushered me to a private sitting room to conduct the interview. For being dressed in simple black pants and a blank long sleeve slim shirt I was over dressed.
Her hair was pulled back in a tight ponytail that looked like it pulled the edges of her eyes by the black strands. She had on colourful tennis shoes with black workout pants and a stained band t-shirt. For being so relaxed in her clothing she still somehow radiated an amazing sense of professionalism and knowledge about her position.
She laughed and giggled with me through the interview. The answers to the questions she asked had been previously rehearsed with Carter as best as possible with a few adlib answers like
“I applied because I loved keeping things clean and tidy but needed to move for my family so I couldn’t stay.”
She offered me the job by the end of the interview and told me I’d start in a week. Which means again, my birthday back home with my makeshift family would be delayed once again as my 20th birthday came and went on April 16th. By the time I had left the office after my unplanned rendezvous with a mystery man who called himself an Alpha, it was 30 minutes past midnight. And I spent my 20th birthday begging to see whoever that man was again and aching to have him inside me once more.
A week came too soon…
I nervously stared up to the house. It looked over me like a predator over prey. It reminded me of the feeling I had a week ago. Being turned to prey after training to be a predator was demeaning yet exciting. I silently begged to come across that man again at some point or to at least find out who he was…
“Ella!” A high voice called my assumed name from the doorway as she skipped down. She seemed similar to when I had seen her a week ago. Save for her beautiful black hair which was laid perfectly in a straight line down her back and shoulders. Her grey eyes shimmered as she rushed to me, extending her hand to shake. “Come on in, the other new hire Just got here!”
She took the other housekeeper and I through the house to our rooms. Two small rooms at the end of the hall which Beth said were mostly staff. The room was smaller than mine back home, and I’d be stuck without my electronics and comforts for the duration of my stay. I was met with a twin sized bed with a thin white comforter, and while quite light in weight, it was soft and seemed cozy. A small writing desk and chair and a wardrobe for clothing which already had a bundle of place aprons.
“We do aprons cause the pockets are a lot better than pants but you don’t have to wear them if you don’t want to. Whatever is comfortable just as long as it’s closed-toed shoes and nothing you mind getting dirty.” She smiled at me brightly. “Bathrooms are shared between two rooms like a dormitory, so you and Taylor will share this one…” she said, opening the door of my room to a small bathroom with a sink and standing shower. “Decorate how you want. Make it yours!”
Taylor smiled and thanked her as she walked through the door and to her room, setting her stuff on the bed in her room. I looked out of the window which was a corner window on the very end of the hallway, looking out into the beautiful garden which sat behind the house. It looked like some royal palace court…
“Ella…” Beth's voice caught me as I looked and I turned to her with a forced smile.
“It’s wonderful Beth. Thank you so much for this opportunity…”
“We are happy to have you!” She said smiling then she looked down at her phone which dinged. “Ah well, duty calls. Dinner for staff starts at 7. I can come get you guys if you want to settle in for a bit.”
Taylor stood back in the doorway leading to my room. Her blond curls bounced when she nodded “Sounds good.”
“Yeah.” I agreed. Then Beth bid us both a temporary goodbye before turning and leaving us. Taylor smiled with a curt nod and closed the door as she made her way back to her room.
I pulled my phone from my bag and sighed. Only two numbers were saved. Carter and Mason, under names that weren’t theirs. Mason would be in the middle of training right now, and Carter was driving back home to pick up supplies for us as our stay would be longer than necessary.
I wasn’t allowed to make phone calls in the house. Just in case anywhere had listening devices.
I fell back into the bed and sighed, looking up to the ceiling for a bit before setting an alarm on my phone and curling up. The bed was pretty comfortable albeit smaller than I’m used to.
Beth knocked gently on my door, my alarm had been going off quietly beneath my pillow but hadn’t woken me.
I rushed to the door and greeted her, apologizing for sleeping in longer than I expected to. But she just smiled and shrugged.
“Sometimes ya need to sleep.”
“Give me one second to get a ponytail and stuff.” She nodded.
“I’ll grab Taylor.” She said and I nodded.
I turned and pulled my hair into a long ponytail on my head before I popped a small capsule into my mouth from a bottle in my bag. The suppressants I would have to take every few hours to keep my heat in check. It didn’t stop the ache deep in my belly for satisfaction but it helped keep my pheromones at a level that people wouldn’t notice.
I followed Beth from the room and down a few halls.
“This is the supply closet… this is the laundry room… this is one of our bathrooms. She listed as we walked. “And don’t worry about remembering everything immediately, I’ll give you a formal tour when we start work tomorrow. We have a track outside past the garden. Workout equipment in the basement...”
“What’s that one?” Taylor asked.
“Oh, conference hall!” Beth said, reaching for the door handle. But it was locked. “Oh, actually They are probably having a meeting right now.” She added before shrugging, “Still handling Alliance stuff.”
“What about that one?”
But I knew what that room was. That room was the Alphas office. Where I had found myself a week earlier trying to escape the heat erupting through my body. Where a mystery man had confronted me and where I let him have his way with me against the Alphas desk.
Beth opened the door and flicked on a light. “This is the Alphas Main office.” She said.
My eyes landed on a dark stain just in front of the desk and I felt my cheeks blush. Anyone with a nose would know this room smelled like s*x after I had left it… I wondered if anyone knew it was me…
His dark wooden desk loomed like a dirty secret being aired out. The door to the right was open and I could see the outline of a toilet lit up by the light from the office.
“Wow.” Taylor cooed into the room, looking around like a star struck child. “Cool!”
“Now Alpha Gabriel has a completely open door policy. If he is in his office and it’s open, he welcomes any and all guests, visitors, questions, concerns… etc.” she said as she flicked the light off and turned back to us.
“I’ll introduce you guys to him when he isn’t in meetings but yeah. If there’s something happening don’t feel like you can’t approach him for help.”
We nodded in agreement again before Beth ushered us off to the dining room where other staff were laughing and joking around big plates of food covering the long dining table. My phone began to ring quietly in my pocket and I looked away from Taylor long enough to see a name flash on my screen.
“Excuse me…” I said to her before slipping out of the dining room and around the corner to the main hall of the house where I stepped outside into the brisk night air of spring before calling the number back.
“Hey Kiddo, doing okay?”
“Yeah, I’m okay.”
Mason sighed over the phone and I heard it rustle and click before another voice hit the speaker.
“Seen the alpha yet?” Carter asked softly.
“Not yet. Just making myself at home…” I said softly as I sat on a stone bench that faced the garden.
“I’ll be back in two days…” Carter sighed.
“I just… wasn’t expecting to stay so long…” I admitted to them, they both paused, seeming to mull over the words to give the most gentle response.
I had to admit. I may have had the same training that everyone else at the Farm had, but Mason favored and coddled me when I was younger, and I was, unfortunately, far more emotionally attached to him and the Farm than I should have been. It went past the normal Brotherhood of a band of people sharing the same bond of appreciation to one another… Mason was practically my father, and Carter may as well have been my brother, and I missed them terribly.
“Don’t worry Ari…” Mason cooed gently into the phone, he truly sounded like the lost father desperately trying to keep his emotions together for his daughter.
A tear threatened my eye as I waited for anyone to say anything else that would keep me from crying. But when neither of them said anything my voice cracked as I sighed.
“I’m just home sick…” I admitted quietly.
There was a pause on the other end, as if they were contemplating the softest way to come back at the notion.
“I understand Ari…” Mason eventually said, his voice heavy with concern. He wouldn’t admit it to anyone, but he was way softer on me than anyone else at the Farm as well.
“I’ll see you soon Ar…” Carter said into the phone.
“Okay…”
“Don’t worry Kiddo, You’ll be back with your family before you know it.”
“Talk soon guys…” I responded to them.
“Bye…” They said together.
As the phone flashed the “Call ended” prompt on the screen I sighed, tears slipping down my chilled cheeks as I breathed in a shaking sigh that hurt my chest.
Maybe Mason was right in having concerns of me going so young… Maybe I wasn’t ready for this… I was still practically a child in the terms of the Farm. Now I was sitting in the garden of the man I had been assigned to kill, crying because I was homesick for my makeshift family…
I stared out into the woody garden and wiped tears from my cheeks on the sleeve of my shirt. I sniffled miserably.
As I took in another cool breath of air I was suddenly hit with a familiar scent. Cologne… Sandalwood with that tiny hint of lavender. I froze. Looking around the nearby area, trying to discern where it was coming from. When I was met with only darkness with the occasional beam of moonlight I stood and shoved the phone into my pocket, took one more look around, suspicious of the smell before retreating back to the dining hall where Taylor and Beth greeted me.
