The First Day

*Ariella* The next morning I woke up sluggishly, my eyes were swollen and my head pounded as the new day sun glinted into my face. The Alarm clock flashed 6:15 and I wouldn't need to be up for another 45 minutes. But given my sleeping habits I knew I wouldn’t be able to fall back asleep. I slipped on a pair of thin workout pants and tied my hair into a high ponytail. I sucked down yet another suppressant before I tied my tennis shoes tightly around my ankles and stepped out of my room. The house was quiet, not a soul seemed to move around in the early morning wake of spring here. The Farm would be bustling by now, Breakfast was at 5, Training started by 6 for most, and those on cleaning duty would be moving through the houses in waves until 7 or 7:30 when they would move to their own training. Most everyone had duties that rotated. Mason was strict on making sure everyone knew the value of a day's hard work. Cleaning, cooking, laundry, yard duties. If you wanted to stay with the Farm, you chipped in your fair share to the Farm. By now, Mason would be coaching the younger kids in the yard, he would start off with running drills, move into boxing, taekwondo, more running drills… Those on duties would break off to complete their tasks then come back for more after meals before being allowed to break off for personal time before dinners and more duties… I missed my routine desperately. By now I should be wrestling with Carter in the yard, showing him that small doesn’t mean weak. I should be home, teasing him about his flirty antics and gossiping about girls he comes across on his own missions. I came to the stairs and was hit with a familiar scent and a deep voice speaking down the hall. I could discern Beth's voice and another male, all conversing and waited for a moment to see if I could pick up anything other than the sound of their voices. But when the voices started moving closer I fled down the stairs and out into the garden, where in the daylight, I could see the beginning of the track that Beth had mentioned the day before. I ran on the track for the next thirty minutes. Passing the quarter mile marker 12 times before trotting to a stop at the sign and leaning over my knees to catch my breath. Sweat dripped down my forehead and my chest, soaking the top of the navy tank top I wore. Making it stick to me like a second skin. I could feel the sweat soaking my entire body down to my socks which felt damp. “f**k this humidity.” I breathed out to myself angrily as I sucked in air. I couldn’t fathom how it could be 60 degrees yet feel like 100 with the humidity. “Sucks, don’t it?” A deep voice caught me off guard and I turned, thankful to not catch the cologne smell, meaning this hadn’t been my late night casanova from the gala. I nodded, “How do you survive in such a humid climate?” I asked, breathing in as I straightened my back and placed my hands on my waist. I gave another exhaustive sigh, still feeling like my lungs had been trapped in a wet fog. The man laughed, his bright Green eyes glimmering in the bright sun. He had rosy cheeks which raised with his smile and an overall jovial appearance. His shirt was bright Orange over black workout pants, somehow the bright colour was very complimentary of his tawny brown hair and olive skin. “You get used to it after living here for 25 years.” “Props to you, I couldn’t.” I met his widening smile with an equally friendly laugh as he shook his head. Leaning back and squeezing my own hands around my hips as I took in yet another deep, wet breath. “You must be the new Housekeeper?” He said putting his hand out to me. “Ella.” I said quickly. “I’d shake your hand but I’m really sweaty…” He shrugged. “I’m not worried about it.” He said, insisting on his hand. I laughed and nodded, finally extending my hand to shake with him. I could feel the sweat on my palm squish over his. “My name is Esen.” He said as we shook. “I am the Beta of Full Moon.” I tensed uncomfortably at the words. I was staring into the eyes of the packs Beta. “I’m surprised you’re out without any detail or girls swarming you.” I laughed and he smiled with a humoured chuckle, folding his arms over his chest as he shifted on his feet. “You’d be surprised…” He said with a grin, “Its pretty safe around the pack house, and everyone knows I have a partner, we just haven’t marked one another yet.” “Oh that makes sense!” “What about you though?” He asked, “I hardly ever see housekeepers out alone, everyone has their little cliques.” I shook my head with a smile, “I guess I haven’t found my way into one yet. I kinda stick to myself.” He nodded, “Makes sense.” He looked over at me and an eyebrow raised, “So where ya from if you aren’t used to this climate?” “I’m from a little town up North…” I said. “Why’d you come all the way here?” he shifted onto his other foot as he stood, c*****g his head to the side with a curious glance over me. “My… Cousin had some personal issues so I moved closer to be with him if he needed me… I needed a good job to support us a little better while he deals with his health issues so, here I am.” He nodded “Gotcha… Well, welcome to Full Moon…” He raised a hand slightly, gesturing in a friendly manner. “If you need anything, or your cousin needs anything, please don’t be afraid to ask…” he offered, “I mean, me or Alpha Gabriel.” He added on. “We have a lot of means to help if needed.” “I appreciate that Esen.” I responded with a relieved smile. “No problem, Ella. We are here to help!” He grinned happily before he clapped his hands together and shifted once again on his feet, almost in an antsy manner. “Well… I will let you get to your work out.” “It was nice talking to you!” He said giving a small wave. “You too!” I turned and left the track as he took off in a slow run around the track. He had a regal and strong gait which carried his long legs easily. I made my way back to my room and showered before dressing in tight black pants and a long sleeved black shirt. My usual attire when I would perform my duties back home. I let my long hair dry in the air while I sat and played a boring game on my phone for the last few minutes I had before Beth would meet Taylor and I to begin learning our duties.
