The Replacement’s Shadow.

Three days after Marcus’s death, the first poisoned supply crate was found. A young kitchen worker collapsed after tasting the evening stew. She survived, but only because one of the pack healers recognized the bitter scent of moonshade root in time. The crate had come from a trusted outer farm. Someone had switched the contents on the road. Kael stood over the half-empty crate in the storage hall, face like stone. “This is not Thorne’s style. He prefers open blood.” Ronan crushed a piece of the root under his boot. “Then someone else is playing.” Darius’s golden eyes narrowed. “The little replacement.” Selene felt the name like a cold finger down her spine. Lila. The younger female Thorne had chosen in front of the entire Moonridge Pack. The girl who had smiled when Selene’s rejection mark first burned. That night the three Alphas did not let Selene out of their sight. Even during the emergency council meeting, one of them always stayed within arm’s reach. When the meeting ended, they took her straight back to their chamber. The door locked. The competition for her attention began before she could speak. Ronan pulled her into his lap on the edge of the bed and kissed her slowly, deeply, as if the poison threat had only made him need her taste more. Kael stood behind her, hands sliding under her shirt to cup her breasts, thumbs brushing her n*****s with deliberate patience. Darius knelt between her knees and pressed his mouth to the inside of her thigh, biting gently. They took their time. Ronan lifted her just enough to free himself and lower her onto his c**k. The slow stretch dragged a soft moan from her throat. Kael kept her back against his chest, one hand around her throat in light possession, the other still tormenting her breasts. Darius stayed low, tongue working her c**t in perfect rhythm with every rise and fall of her body on Ronan. They watched each other. They adjusted. They competed in silence for every tremor that ran through her. When she came, it was with all three of them touching her at once. Ronan followed soon after, gripping her hips hard. They shifted without words. Kael took her next, deeper and colder, while Darius and Ronan kept her mouth and breasts occupied. Darius finished the round by bending her over the bed and thrusting into her with long, steady strokes while the other two held her open and kissed every sound from her lips. Afterward she lay between them, thoroughly claimed, the threat of poison still hanging over the pack but unable to touch the heat inside the room. Just before midnight a scout’s urgent knock broke the quiet. “Alphas. We caught someone at the eastern border. A female. Young. She asked for Selene by name.” The three Alphas exchanged one look. They dressed Selene themselves again—hands lingering, straps tightened with possessive care—and took her down to the lower holding cells. Lila stood behind the iron bars. She looked thinner than Selene remembered, but her eyes still held the same sharp calculation. When she saw Selene walking between three powerful Alphas, something ugly flashed across her face. “I came to warn you,” Lila said, voice soft and poisonous. “Thorne is planning something worse than open war. He has a new ally. Someone who knows how to kill a shared bond.” Kael’s voice was pure ice. “Talk.” Lila’s eyes stayed on Selene. “Not for free. I want protection. And I want her to hear every word.” Ronan growled. “You’re in no position to bargain.” Darius only smiled, but the smile was lethal. “Or we can make you talk the hard way.” Lila’s gaze never left Selene. “He’s going to use an old ritual. Something that burns multiple claims out of a female’s body at once. He doesn’t want you dead, Selene. He wants you empty again. Ready for him.” The temperature in the cell dropped. Kael stepped closer to the bars. “Where?” Lila smiled, small and bitter. “That information costs extra. And I want a guarantee she will never be the only Luna in this story.” Selene felt the three Alphas around her go completely still. The replacement had not come to help. She had come to carve out a place of her own—in blood if necessary. The silence in the holding cell stretched until it felt sharp enough to cut. Kael stood closest to the bars, frost-pale eyes locked on Lila. Ronan’s hands were already half-shifted into claws. Darius leaned against the back wall, golden gaze moving slowly between Lila and Selene, as if measuring exactly how much pain the younger female was worth. Selene stepped forward before any of them could speak. “What ritual?” Lila’s smile was thin. “An old one. Pre-pack. It needs the blood of a rejected mate and the presence of every male who has claimed her. Once it’s completed, every bond burns out of the female’s body at the same time. She becomes empty again. Claimable by whoever is left standing.” Ronan’s growl vibrated through the stone. “Thorne wants to wipe us out of her.” “Yes,” Lila said simply. “And he needs her alive to do it.” Kael’s voice was quiet and lethal. “Where is he preparing this ritual?” Lila tilted her head. “I want guarantees first. Protection inside Nightfall. A place in the pack. And a promise that she—” her eyes flicked to Selene “—will never be the only female the three of you protect.” Darius laughed once, low and cold. “You’re bargaining with the wrong wolves.” Selene felt the three Alphas shift around her, a living wall of heat and violence. Even now, with a direct threat to their bond hanging in the air, their bodies angled toward her first. Ronan’s shoulder brushed hers. Kael’s fingers found the small of her back. Darius moved until he stood just behind her right side. The message was wordless and absolute: Lila was temporary. Selene was not. Kael spoke again. “You will tell us everything you know. In return, you live. That is the only guarantee you will receive.” Lila studied their faces and seemed to realize the limit of her leverage. Her shoulders dropped a fraction. “There’s an abandoned temple complex two days north of the Ironfang border. Old stone. Pre-dates most of the current packs. Thorne and Vex have been moving supplies there for a week. The ritual needs a full moon. The next one is in five nights.” Ronan’s eyes narrowed. “How many fighters?” “More than you faced last time. They’ve called in a third pack—smaller, but vicious. The Redclaw. They specialize in ambush and poison.” Kael’s expression did not change, but Selene felt the temperature around him drop. “Is that all?” Lila hesitated, then added, “Thorne still thinks he can walk away with her when it’s over. He talks about putting his mark back on her once the three of yours are burned out. He says the rejection was a moment of weakness. He’s been saying it every night.” The words should have hurt. Instead they only made the three Alphas press closer to Selene. Darius’s voice was soft and dangerous. “We’re done with her.” They left Lila in the cell under triple guard and returned to their chamber in silence. The moment the door locked, the tension between the three males snapped into something hotter and more focused. Ronan reached Selene first. He cupped her face with both hands and kissed her like he needed to prove the bonds were still there. Kael moved behind her, already pulling her shirt upward. Darius dropped to his knees and pressed his mouth to the soft skin just above her waistband, biting gently. They stripped her with urgent care. Ronan sat on the edge of the bed and pulled her down onto him. She sank onto his c**k in one slow slide, the fullness dragging a shared groan from both of them. Kael stayed behind her, chest to her back, one hand around her throat in light possession, the other reaching down to stroke her c**t in tight circles. Darius stood to the side, guiding her mouth to him so she could take him while she rode. The threat of the ritual made every touch sharper. They competed harder than usual—each one determined to leave the strongest impression, the deepest memory, the clearest claim. When Ronan made her gasp, Kael stroked faster. When Kael whispered something cold and filthy in her ear, Darius pushed deeper into her mouth. They kept her balanced on the edge until she shattered with a broken cry, clenching hard around Ronan. He followed with a rough snarl, holding her down through every pulse. They switched without pause. Kael lifted her, turned her to face him, and thrust up into her in one clean motion. His eyes stayed locked on hers the entire time, frost-pale and intense, as if daring the coming ritual to try erasing what he was putting into her body right now. Ronan and Darius flanked them—mouths on her breasts, hands stroking every sensitive place, voices low and possessive. She came again under the combined attention. Kael finished deep inside her moments later. Darius took her last. He bent her forward over the bed, gripped her hips, and drove into her with long, powerful strokes that made the frame creak. Kael and Ronan held her open, kissed her, stroked her c**t, and whispered the same truth against her skin: she was theirs. All three of them. No ritual would change it. When Darius finally came, the four of them collapsed together in a heavy, tangled heap. Selene lay in the center, thoroughly claimed, the scent of her Alphas sunk so deep into her skin that the idea of anyone burning it out felt almost laughable. Kael’s fingers traced the place where her old rejection mark used to live. It was nearly gone. “Five nights until the full moon.” Ronan’s arm locked around her waist. “Then we hit the temple before they finish preparing.” Darius pressed a slow kiss to the back of her neck. “And we remind Thorne what happens when he tries to take what belongs to us.” Outside, the pack prepared for a longer march. Inside, three ruthless Alphas curled tighter around the female at the center of the coming storm, already planning blood and already wanting her again. The replacement had delivered her warning. The real war was about to move north.
