Chapter 7The afternoon was at its height by the time they finished eating, after which they went upstairs together, each disappearing into their own quarters to unpack and arrange things to their liking. Vincent’s quarters were already mostly in order, since Mrs. Carter and the maids knew how he liked things to be, but Eiji did not reappear until late evening, and then only long enough to drain a cup of soup and give Vincent a distracted smile before taking himself up to bed. Vincent supposed, in addition to the organization of his rooms, Eiji must want some time to think about all they had discussed. He could not hold it against him; he too was grateful for a bit of time to process. It saddened Vincent to know that Eiji had been in such an unfortunate marriage, even for so short a time.
