Chapter 16Vincent spent the ride to town two days later in a stew of anxious energy. He could not find a comfortable position on the bench, in a carriage that he had, quite literally, fallen asleep in on previous occasions; on this occasion, the edges of the seat dug into his legs and the cushions caused various parts of his anatomy to fall asleep, and through it all he felt a restless tension that drove him to shift position almost constantly, shot through with moments of determination to sit still, until they were broken by the need to move again. Finally, after half a day’s long journey, he felt the shift in road between the country dirt and the city cobblestone, and pulled up the window blind to watch the familiar streets flicker by.
