Chapter 4My desire to learn carried me from that little house near Abydus to Athens, to Mantinea, searching out knowledge. In Mantinea, I learned of an academy to the south across the waters of the Mediterranean, where scholars taught lessons in math and reading, and skills for careers in public service and the military. More than all of that was the library, rumored to be the largest of its kind in the known world, it was a collection of written words, clay tablets, beaten metal etched with symbols and animal skins, stretched thin and beaten into sheets to be marked with charcoal and plant dyes.
