Chapter 68: Explanation

None of this makes sense. Why would they abduct me? Why would they abduct my mom?? Is Dimitri behind this? I need to calm down. I close my eyes and do my practice breaths. As I finish I hear a noise. That’s when I notice that Alec is sitting on the couch now, and my mom has her hands on me.

I quickly turn around, jump up, and hug my mom so hard.

She wipes my tears away and walks me over to the chairs that are placed by the couch.

She looks good. Even though she’s been locked up here for months. Her hair is longer now, but she doesn’t look rough or starved. That makes me happier.

I sit down and turn my attention to Alec. My mom sits in the chair next to me and grabs my hand. It gives me a sort of relief having her near me. I have missed her so much!

“I know you have many questions. I cannot answer them all right now, but I can answer a few. Starting with why your mom was abducted.” He pauses and looks at us both. “You see. I’ve been waiting for quite some time for Dimitri to take over. Unfortunately with many outdated rules, some you can’t change. Dimitri needs to have a bride in order to take the thrown. Unfortunately he has never found interest in anyone.”

“But he is engaged? His fiancé came and threatened me!” I yell to interrupt him, but he cut me off putting his hand in the air.

“No. You have been misguided. Camilla is NOT his fiancee. Originally her father and I had discussed the possibility of an arranged marriage. Unfortunately Dimitri found Camilla to be.. unsuitable.” He states. What? So they aren’t engaged? I’m beyond confused.

“So they aren’t engaged?? I’m confused. But wait, why did you abduct my mom and me?” I ask. This is all so confusing.

“Yes. Well Camilla saw a change in him one day and followed him to you.. She sat and listened to you guys talk for hours.. She became livid. So she decided to threaten you because she wanted you to leave him alone. Thinking he’d settle for her.. But that’s not the case.” He pauses. “I need to go back in time to explain why we took your mom. Dimitri has always kind of marched to a different beat than what was expected of him. After he refused the arranged marriage he became angry and distant. All of the pressure to find a bride in order to take over. He began lashing out. He was traveling all over the world killing people. We had to find him, capture him, and lock him up for a while after he killed nearly 200 people within 6 months… Yes we are vampires, and sometimes we do kill people. But even we have rules set against mass casualties. It took 40 of our top warriors to find him and successfully catch him. He killed 10 of our warriors in the process. He was upset and spiraling. Thinking he would never find his one true love. He believed his true love must have been killed or that they will just never meet..” 200 people? He’s a murderer??

“After he was released, he had become calmer. He started to meditate and take walks to clear his head. One day he decided to walk a little farther, when he ran across a human village. Where he found someone he found extremely captivating. You. Once I had found out, I had contacted your mother. I wanted to make an arrangement with her and you. She refused. She did not want you to become a witch or wolf. She wanted you to remain human and protected. I had been working with her for a few months to get something figured out. Some sort of agreement. But she wouldn’t budge. She did not want her baby to be thrown into the world she tried to protect her from. Which is when we realized who your father was. An ally of ours. I had decided to abduct her so that you would have to go live with your father. Which would give you access to this world, our world, and Dimitri. I just wanted to make sure the two spells your mom put up, would be down. So you could get your powers and that you would get a chance to meet Dimitri.” He pauses looking a little ashamed of what he chose but also happy for his son. “The way he felt about you, he was sure it would be felt by you as well. He had been searching for the one for a very long time, and didn’t want to lose you. But I knew that there was no way your mother would allow him access to you.” He says and pausing again, looking rather ashamed. “I do realize what I did was not the best option, or the most respected choice... But I wanted my son to be happy.” He stops and looks down.

“Ok. So you explained why you took my mom. Why did you abduct me?” I ask.

“Well ever since you went back to the human village I have had spies watching you. My spies saw you getting close with an other boy. Which could jeopardize Dimitri’s chance with you.. We have spies everywhere you see. Some of my spies have heard rumors of Camilla sending out hit men to kill you.. When you confronted Dimitri before leaving for the human village about Camilla, he called her out. He told her he has zero interest in her, never has and never will. She did not like being told no. The girl has never been told no before in her entire life.. She feels if she kills you, Dimitri would want to be with her. Which doesn’t make very much sense to me.”’he says shrugging.

I sat and thought for a moment.

“So you kidnapped me because I’ve been spending time with my friend Sam? But also because you don’t want me dead?” I ask trying to fully understand everything he just told me.

“Precisely. I want you safe and alive. Being here increases the odds of this. I know it’s not ideal, but that is why I had this cell remodeled. I was hoping it would make it a little more comfortable for you. I had your mom’s made up too.” He states. .

“Wait. I had visions and every vision she was in a dingy cell with nothing more than a blanket?” I asked confused.

He thought for a second, “Ah! No. Her first cell was the one you speak of. She was in it for a few days. I wasn’t here to speak with her. She kept trying to escape. Once I talked to her, I was able to get her to calm down, and switched her cell.”

I look over at my mom and she just looks so worn out.

“I’ll leave you two to talk. I just wanted to stop in and explain what was going on. I’m hoping by the end of next week you can be released. I just need to get things figured out first. Camilla needs to be dealt with. Unfortunately I am unable to locate Dimitri. He has given my spies a slip, and no one can locate him.” He states.

Dimitri is now missing?

Did Camilla abduct him?

I look up as he shuts the cell.

My mom turns to me, pushing my hair behind my ear. “How have you been? I’ve been so worried about your sister and you. You look like you’ve changed and have grown even just in the last few months.”

I sat for a second. Still processing everything.

“What’s the matter sweetheart? It will all be ok!” She gently says comforting, grabbing my hand.

I rip my hand away and stand up, facing her.

“You lied to us. You kept everything a secret! I mean I get some of it. But you literally made it so part of us was suppressed, I always felt like I was missing something. I just assume it was just my imagination or something. But to find out you are a witch, dad is this wolf leader, which makes Caitlyn and I a mix, and we would have never known. You planned to keep it suppressed so we never would become who we were meant to be?? I know what you did was to protect us, but keeping us from dad?? Keeping part of us hidden?” I pause pacing.. “I just don’t get it. Especially as we were getting closer to being adults. We should have been given the information and the choice..” I was getting so angry. I had missed her and had been so worried about her, I didn’t think about all of the lies and how much it hurt me. It all came flowing out of me like lava coming out of a volcano.

She stood up facing me, but not touching me.

“Honey. I did what I thought was right. I did what I thought would protect you both.. I had people after me.. Bad people… I didn’t want those people coming after you to harm you. I wanted to keep you both safe and protected. Being locked up here, I’ve come to face my choices.. I have come to realize they were not the best..” she pauses, tears flooding her eyes. “I should have had a talk with you guys as you were around 15/16. I should have found a way for your dad to come see you guys. Even if you didn’t know about the wolf part until you were older. We shouldn’t have deprived you guys of that relationship. If and when you become a mother, you will see how much you try to keep your kids safe and protected. Even if sometimes you may have to cross a line you should not.. I hope over time you can come to forgive me and see why I did what I chose to do. I love you and your sister more than you can even fathom.” She states with tears pouring down her face.

I run up and hug her tightly as we both cried.
