Chapter 15: Wolves? Giant wolves?

The next 3 hours of the ride were pretty boring and uneventful, until now. I finished my first book when we stopped for lunch and gas. I started my second book, but felt a nagging feeling in my stomach. We had about an hour until we were finally there. I’m not sure what is causing this feeling.. I have never felt this before. I stopped reading. The feeling was overwhelming.

“Lex. Breathe. Breathe. What is going on?” Caitlyn asks her voice filled with worry. Now sitting up and leaning across the car to grab my hand.

“I don’t know. Something just feels.. Off..” I couldn’t say anything when something hits our car. The car starts rolling sideways. What just happened? What is going on? What just hit us?

The car stops rolling when I see both Maverick and Meghan jump out of their seats and out of the car. Thankfully the car landed right side up. Maverick turns back and basically demands, “stay in the car! Do not get out under any circumstances!” And then he was gone. Caitlyn was knocked out. Her head had a gash and some scratches on her face. I hurried up and grabbed her. Pulling her so she was laying across the seat with her head in my lap. I carefully move the hair off of her gash, then I check her pulse. It is strong. Thank goodness..

I felt someone looking at me. So I turn and look. To my right I see this black wolf. Wait. A giant black wolf? That is literally not possible. That thing is huge. And it’s looking at me like it wants to kill me. It starts to growl and run full force at us. I start panting and almost hyperventilating. I had to remind myself to breathe. If Caitlyn were conscious she would be reminding me to breathe..

BREATHE!!!

Just as I thought the thing was going to jump at us, an other wolf runs and tackles it to the ground. This one is also black but has a white patch on its chest. It is bigger than the first wolf. Is this wolf going to kill us? I look out the other window and see multiple wolves all attacking a different one. The one being attacked is a reddish brown color. It is bigger than the others, but had the disadvantage. Next thing I know, I see the giant black one with the white patch jump over the vehicle. Land on the other side, and runs to help the other wolf.. It seems the two are together.

This literally can’t be real. No way there are these giant wolves, wouldn’t we have seen them before? Why were they fighting? Where are Maverick and Meghan? As I was drowning in thoughts I noticed that the two partner wolves start walking back to our vehicle. I start freaking out. Can they get in here? Will they kill us? It seems they killed 10 other giant wolves, so two teenage girls wouldn’t be much of a struggle for them.

I close my eyes as they are right next to the car. Next thing I hear is Maverick on the phone. What???? Where did he come from? I start to freak out, “Maverick, Meghan, hurry up! Get in the car! It isn’t safe out there! There are wild animals out there. Killing and fighting each other. Get in the car before they see you!” They weren’t even trying to get in the car. They looked at each other and Maverick turned his back to the car. What?? Do they not understand what I just said? Do they not realize there is danger out there???

“Lex?” Caitlyn weakly says.

I look down and she has her eyes half open. She looks so rough and weak right now. I can’t believe this just happened.

I move her hair off her face again, and just hold her tight.

At that point Maverick and Meghan get in.

“What was that? What just happened? Why didn’t you get in? It is beyond dangerous out there!! Those monsters could have came back for you!” I began shrieking.

They just looked at each other and ignored me. Somehow the car still worked, why were they ignoring me?

“Lex, please breathe. What is going on?” Caitlyn asked, trying to sit up, but I was holding her too tight for her to move.

“There were all these giant wolves. They were fighting. At the end of the fight the two bigger ones were coming to the car. I closed my eyes thinking we were about to die. Then I could hear Maverick’s voice. He was on the phone. I started yelling for them to get inside. I didn’t want them to be attacked, but they ignored me. And now they are ignoring me still. Why are you guys not answering me?!?!” I then yelled.

“I’m sorry. Your father has forbade us from disclosing any information. He wishes to speak with you on all matters, when we arrive. Which will be in 40 minutes or less.” Meghan answered. This is the first time she has spoke, and she has an accent.

Why couldn’t they talk to us? Why did we have to wait? My heart is still going in overdrive after what we just saw. That was terrifying. Is this something they see a lot out here? So they are just used to it? I don’t understand. Also how did those two wolves just disappear into thin air? Where were Maverick and Meghan at? After they left the vehicle I didn’t see them again until Maverick was on the phone. None of this was making any sense!

I let out a huff. Caitlyn slowly sat up. I could see Maverick glancing in the rear view mirror when she did. Probably because she was groaning so loudly. She had unbuckled just before the accident. Which was my fault she was unbuckled, and now she’s hurt.

“Alexis, it’s not your fault. You didn’t cause the accident. I am not mad at you. I am just hurting. I hope I didn’t bleed all over the interior… Blood never comes out. I am glad I have this red sweater on. Can’t even see any blood on it.” She chuckles. Always trying to make light of any situation. I still feel horrible. She grabs my hand and sits back against her seat with her head laying back.

“Don’t go back to sleep. You could have a concussion.” I stated. She sat up into more of a seated position, over the comfortable position she had just moved to. We sat in silence the rest of the ride.

Soon we started to go through a forest. It is beautiful, I love greenery and nature. It made me relax a little. Then we started to drive on this rock road, driving in through the forest. It is very bumpy. I started worrying about Caitlyn. As I was about to say something the road we are driving on turned to a paved road. There are some cute houses all around. Then I see a pond out my window with some trees near it. At the end of the road there is this ginormous building, or maybe a house? It was huge! Almost like a castle, but not quite.

It is made of grey stone and looks to be 4 stories tall, and it is long too. It has what looks to be a garden and a greenhouse on one side. Maverick pulls up outside the huge place. There are a few stairs up to the set of black double doors.

“Ok we are here. We will escort you to your father’s office.” Maverick states as he gets out of the car. He opens Caitlyn’s door, and I open my own. As we got out he helped Caitlyn wobble around the car. I put my arm around her waist and we both take a deep breath.

The great unknown is behind those double doors.
