When Lucas returned from his call, the living room was already empty.
She had left still wearing her wet clothes. His coat and shirt had been tossed aside. The small jade Buddha pendant on the table was taken.
But the check was still there.
He chuckled.
Soft body, soft demeanor....
Who would've thought she had such a stubborn streak?
He reached for the check, rubbing it between his fingers. Remembering that kiss, he suddenly felt parched again, heat rising in his throat. The air conditioner was on, but he still felt hot and agitated.
After Nina left the estate, she didn’t go home right away.
Though Victor Walker never showed her real affection, she hadn’t expected him to send her out like some toy.
She wandered aimlessly for a long while before finally returning to the Walker residence.
By then, it was late. The night was filled only with the chirping of cicadas.
Just as she reached the villa’s gate, a beam of headlights flashed in the distance. She squinted from the glare, and when her vision cleared.
Bryan Carter stood less than a hundred meters away.
His face was dark as he walked over.
“Back this late—how many men did you entertain?”
His eyes held mockery, contempt, and disgust.
Nina didn’t want to argue. She turned to leave, but he grabbed her arm.
“Was the wine dripping off another man’s pants that delicious?”
“What’s it to you?”
Nina yanked her arm away from him.
“Sending your own niece to entertain old men—your family really will do anything for money. After cozying up to Lucas Parker, you even go after someone like Mr. Aaron. Nina Walker, you’re downright cheap.”
Hearing that from the man she had loved for years, Nina felt as if knives were stabbing into her chest.
Her nose stung, and her eyes welled up with heat.
Taking a deep breath, she raised her head.
“I’m cheap? Bryan, when you were leading the Parker heiress’s horse, grinning like a sycophant—weren’t you cheap too?”
His face twisted into a dark snarl.
His fists clenched, veins bulging on his forehead. “Say that again!”
“I’m cheap, sure. I’ll sleep with any man…”
“Except you!”
“Nina Walker, you’ll regret this.”
Bryan stormed off.
Tears welled in her eyes, but she held them back and went inside.
Linda had fallen asleep on the sofa and woke up with a start at the sound of the door.
“Nina? Where’s your uncle?”
“My uncle?” Nina sneered. “He’s not home?”
“He said he was picking you up for dinner. Didn’t let me tag along, so I stayed home to wait.” Linda frowned at her. “Why are your clothes wet? Go take a hot shower.”
Nina nodded.
After the shower, Linda made her some ginger tea.
“Nina, drink this before bed, or you’ll catch a cold.”
Nina smiled and nodded, warmed by the gesture.
