Chapter 14:Take Off Your Shirt

934 Words
Nina still caught a cold. When the alarm went off the next morning, her head was heavy with dizziness. She took some medicine and dragged herself to the hospital. From the moment she arrived, she noticed her colleagues were giving her strange looks. Her headache was pounding, so she didn’t think too much of it. After the morning meeting, the department head looked at her. “Nina, come with me to the office.” She sat down in his office. The director studied her. “Nina, is everything okay at home? You’ve been taking a lot of leave lately.” “Some personal matters,” she replied. “You’ve got a cold too… why don’t I give you a few days off to rest?” “It’s just a mild cold. It won’t affect my work.” He cleared his throat. “Nina, you’re a smart girl. When you joined this department, I really wanted to mentor you. But you should understand, we rely on trust in hospital. I didn’t want to get involved in your personal life, but this…” He handed her a phone. On the screen was a photo of her kneeling and licking wine off the floor last night. Nina flushed with shame. “The hospital leadership doesn’t want this affecting our reputation. So…” His expression was strained. Nina smiled faintly. “Don’t worry. I won’t make things difficult for you. I’ll turn in my resignation today.” She remembered Bryan’s warning the night before. She didn’t need to guess who was behind the photo leak. He wouldn’t break off the engagement, and now he wanted to ruin her job too. Crush her, piece by piece. So ruthless. Back in her office, Nina was packing up her things when her phone buzzed. It was Bryan. She answered with a cold “Hello.” “I told you. Don’t regret it.” “I don’t,” she said through gritted teeth. “Good. I’d like to see how long you’ll last before you come begging.” She hung up. As she was leaving the hospital with her box of belongings, a familiar face appeared. “Miss Walker. What a coincidence.” It was Lucan, Lucas Parker’s assistant. “Hello,” Nina replied politely. “So you work here. I see… Are you leaving?” Nina just gave him a faint smile. Lucan, skilled at reading people, didn’t pry further. But his eyes glinted as he said, “Miss Walker, I wonder if I could ask a favor.” “I’m afraid I can’t help much.” “Oh, I think you can.” “What is it?” “I’d like you to examine Mr. Parker.” Nina blinked. She had once thought of seducing Lucas Parker. But after last night, she understood, he wouldn’t allow her to cause him trouble. Throwing herself at him again would just be pathetic. Lucan saw her hesitation and added, “Because of his status, he can’t see just any doctor. We really have no choice.” “You’re a doctor. "You can’t just watch someone suffer, right?” “Our second master’s life… is honestly pretty hard.” Lucas could die? Wasn’t that a bit dramatic? Lucan, thick-skinned, grabbed her file box and headed for the parking lot before she could refuse. She had no choice but to follow him into the car. Lucas Parker was not the type to expose his weaknesses. Only a few people knew he had an old injury, including his private doctor, and a handful of others. “Sorry to trouble you. His doctor is in the capital. I had no other choice. Please keep this confidential,” Lucan said. Nina nodded. “He’s in the bedroom,” Lucan said as they arrived at the villa. Outside, rain drummed softly against the glass. Inside, Lucas lay in bed, covered by a light summer blanket. Even asleep, his chiseled features and taut expression exuded authority. Nina tiptoed to his bedside and reached out to check his forehead for a fever. But the moment her hand made contact,he grabbed her wrist. Before she could react, she was yanked toward him and fell straight onto his chest. She gasped, lifted her head and met eyes with his. They were bloodshot, piercing, and predatory. Even half-awake, he looked like he could devour someone. She was sprawled on top of him, her wrist pinned in place. “What are you doing here?” His voice was hoarse and gravelly. “I came to examine you.” “Oh?” Lucas glanced toward Lucan, who stood not far away, and then gave a subtle nod. Lucan bobbed his head like a chicken pecking rice. Only then did Lucas release her wrist. Nina scrambled to sit up. “I just wanted to check if you had a fever.” “No fever,” Lucas said coldly. “It’s an old injury. Hard to fix.” Since she was here, she couldn’t just walk away. “May I at least take a look? Even if it can’t be cured, I might be able to relieve some of the pain.” Lucas glanced again at Lucan. Lucan pretended to be invisible. Lately, Lucas’s condition had worsened, and Lucan had wanted to find him a doctor for ages—but was always rejected. Just as Lucan was preparing to be thrown out again, he heard Lucas say: “Do I need to take off my shirt?” In that moment, Lucan’s soul left his body. Was this still the cold, ruthless second master he served?
