11 Day’s first thought on waking was that it was exactly a week since Edward had taken him to Konstantinos’s marble workshop. Only one week. In that short period Day’s entire focus had changed. Before Edward’s arrival he had been immersed in his research, putting together the biography of Nikos Elias which had been his intended labour for the summer. The first draft was supposed to be in Maurice’s hands by the end of October. Day hadn’t given it a serious thought since Edward’s death. He heaved himself from the bed, flicked on the iron, and went for a shower. The warmth of the water felt good after the cool of the air-conditioned bedroom.
