6 The SeaJet ‘World Champion’, leaving Naxos for Athens, was particularly busy. Day was not surprised. It was Sunday afternoon and the two o’clock sailing was the last of the fast crossings of the day. Not only tourists but Athenians were heading to the mainland. Many of Day’s fellow passengers looked reluctant to be returning to the heavy heat of the capital with the prospect of work the next day. Day, too, felt grim. He suffered from the heat at the best of times, and the wait on the concrete port had been unendurable. On top of that he was not comfortable in a crowd or on board ship.
