Chapter Fifty-Four: A New Beginning
Elara's POV
Sunlight streamed through the tall castle windows, warming my face.
For a long moment, I simply lay there.
No pain.
No fear.
No chains holding my heart.
Only peace.
Lunara stretched lazily inside my mind.
"Now this is much better than almost dying."
Vespera laughed.
"I agree. Let's not do that again for at least... a week."
I giggled.
"I'll try."
A soft knock sounded at the door.
Before I could answer, it slowly opened.
Luna Seraphina entered carrying a breakfast tray.
Fresh fruit.
Warm bread.
Tea.
The moment she saw me smiling, tears filled her eyes.
"My little moon..."
I smiled back.
"Good morning... Grandmother."
Her tray nearly slipped from her hands.
She quickly set it down before hurrying across the room.
"Oh..."
She wrapped her arms around me.
"I've waited so long to hear you call me that."
I hugged her tightly.
"It feels nice."
She kissed the top of my head.
"It feels wonderful."
---
A second knock followed.
This time Alpha Alaric stepped inside.
Behind him came King Cassian.
Neither looked like rulers.
They looked like men who hadn't slept.
Cassian smiled sheepishly.
"We may have checked on you..."
He glanced at Alaric.
"...every hour."
Alpha Alaric cleared his throat.
"It wasn't every hour."
Luna Seraphina raised an eyebrow.
"It was every thirty minutes."
Cassian laughed.
"We were worried."
I couldn't help smiling.
"You've only had me back for one day."
Cassian's expression softened.
"And I intend to keep you for the rest of my life."
Emotion tightened my chest.
For eighteen years...
No one had ever worried about me like this.
---
There was another knock.
Draven leaned into the doorway.
"Am I interrupting?"
Cassian looked toward him.
Then smiled.
"No."
"Come in."
Draven carried another tray.
I laughed.
"How much food does everyone think I can eat?"
Alpha Alaric grinned.
"Enough."
"You nearly drained your life force."
"You'll eat."
Luna Seraphina nodded.
"No arguments."
I looked toward Draven.
"Help."
He raised both hands.
"You're on your own."
Everyone laughed.
---
After breakfast...
Alpha Alaric stood.
"I have something to show you."
He led us through the castle.
The halls were lined with portraits.
Former Alphas.
Past Lunas.
Ancient heroes.
Eventually...
We stopped before a pair of enormous wooden doors.
Alpha Alaric pushed them open.
My breath caught.
Weapons covered every wall.
Swords.
Spears.
Axes.
Bows.
Training dummies stood throughout the enormous room.
"This..."
He smiled proudly.
"...is the Royal Training Hall."
Lunara's ears perked.
"Mother trained here."
Vespera looked around in awe.
"Father visited here."
Alpha Alaric walked to the center.
"This is where your mother became one of the greatest warriors our pack has ever known."
He looked at me.
"And now..."
"...it's where your training begins."
---
King Cassian stepped forward.
"Not today."
Everyone looked at him.
He smiled.
"Today she heals."
"Tomorrow..."
He glanced toward Draven.
"...we begin."
Draven nodded respectfully.
"I'll help."
Alpha Alaric smiled.
"I expected nothing less."
Luna Seraphina folded her arms.
"And don't think combat is all you'll be learning."
I blinked.
"It isn't?"
She laughed.
"Oh, sweetheart."
"You'll learn diplomacy."
"Pack law."
"Royal etiquette."
"Ancient languages."
"History."
"Healing."
"Leadership."
King Cassian smiled proudly.
"A Queen must know far more than how to win a battle."
Those words settled deep inside me.
Queen.
The title still felt strange.
---
Suddenly...
The Council Elder entered the training hall.
He carried several ancient scrolls.
His expression was serious.
"Alpha."
"My King."
Everyone turned toward him.
"What is it?" Cassian asked.
The Elder slowly unrolled the oldest scroll.
Its edges were worn with age.
"I've spent the night studying the ancient prophecy."
His eyes found mine.
"I believe we've misunderstood part of it."
Silence filled the room.
"What do you mean?" Alpha Alaric asked.
The Elder pointed to a faded line written in the ancient language.
"The Eclipse Heir..."
He paused.
"...will not stand alone."
Lunara tilted her head.
"Of course not."
Vespera frowned thoughtfully.
"There's more."
The Elder continued.
"When the Moon..."
"...the Blood..."
"...and the Bond become one..."
He looked directly at Draven.
"...two rulers shall rise where history expected only one."
Draven frowned.
"Two?"
The Elder nodded.
"The prophecy never speaks of a Queen alone."
"It speaks of..."
He smiled.
"...an Eclipse Queen..."
"...and an Eclipse King."
The room fell silent.
Draven looked at me.
I looked back at him.
Neither of us spoke.
But somehow...
Our hearts understood.
Far away...
Deep beneath the Hollow Court fortress...
The silver-masked leader stood before an ancient black altar.
He smiled as dark flames rose around it.
"They've read the prophecy..."
He whispered.
"But they still don't know..."
He placed one hand on the altar.
"...what must happen before the Eclipse King and Queen can truly awaken."
The black flames erupted toward the ceiling.
And somewhere in the darkness...
Something ancient...
Opened its eyes.
