Chapter Nine: The Alpha's Promise
Elara's POV
The forest had fallen silent.
No one moved.
No one spoke.
Alpha Ronan's eyes shifted from me...
To Alpha Draven...
Then to the unmistakable bond connecting us.
His shoulders sagged.
"I was too late."
His words were barely above a whisper.
Luna Elena stepped toward me first.
Without hesitation, she wrapped her arms around me.
Tightly.
"I'm so sorry."
The warmth of her embrace almost made me cry again.
"You should never have gone through that alone."
I closed my eyes.
"I didn't know where else to go."
She gently brushed my curls away from my face.
"I looked everywhere for you."
"I know."
And I did.
I had heard her calling my name while I was running.
But I couldn't face anyone.
Not after what happened.
Alpha Ronan looked at me with regret.
"Elara..."
His voice carried the weight of guilt.
"I failed you."
I shook my head.
"No, Alpha."
"You gave me a home."
He looked away.
"A home where you were treated like an omega."
Silence settled over the clearing.
Because he wasn't wrong.
He had never mistreated me himself.
Neither had Luna Elena.
But they hadn't seen everything.
Or perhaps they hadn't realized how bad it had become.
Draven remained beside me.
Close enough that I could feel the warmth of the mate bond.
Far enough that I never felt crowded.
It was... comforting.
His Beta, Ryder, suddenly cleared his throat.
"Alpha."
Draven looked toward him.
"Our warriors have secured the area."
Draven nodded.
"Good."
Then his attention returned to me.
His silver-gray eyes softened.
"You need a healer."
I instinctively took a step back.
"I'm fine."
Lunara immediately snorted inside my head.
"Liar."
Vespera laughed.
"A terrible liar."
I ignored both of them.
Draven's lips twitched.
"You don't have to pretend with me."
"I've spent my whole life pretending."
The words escaped before I could stop them.
Pain flashed across his face.
Not his pain.
Mine.
The mate bond let him feel it.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Draven slowly held out his hand.
Not to pull me.
Not to claim me.
Simply offering.
"If you'll allow it..."
His voice was quiet.
"I'd like to help."
I stared at his hand.
Strong.
Scarred.
Steady.
So different from Kaiden's.
Kaiden had pushed me away.
Draven was waiting for me to choose.
Luna Elena smiled softly.
"The choice is yours, sweetheart."
No one pressured me.
Not Alpha Ronan.
Not Draven.
Not anyone.
For the first time in my life...
The decision belonged to me.
Slowly...
I placed my hand in his.
The mate bond warmed instantly.
A peaceful warmth.
Not overwhelming.
Not demanding.
Safe.
Orion let out a satisfied rumble.
"She's ours."
Lunara answered gently.
"She always was."
Vespera sighed dramatically.
"Finally. The boys are catching up."
I bit back a smile.
Draven noticed.
His smile widened just enough for me to see.
Then Ryder suddenly froze.
His expression changed.
"Alpha..."
Every warrior immediately turned toward him.
"What is it?" Draven asked.
Ryder pointed toward the eastern tree line.
"There."
Dozens of wolves emerged from the shadows.
Nightshade warriors.
At first, I relaxed.
Until I noticed they weren't alone.
Several Alphas from neighboring packs stepped into the clearing behind them.
One by one.
They had all arrived early for Kaiden's Alpha celebration.
Instead...
They had walked into something entirely different.
Every eye settled on me.
Then on the hand I still held with Draven.
Whispers spread immediately.
"Is that her?"
"The rejected mate?"
"No..."
"The new Luna of Nightshade."
One elderly Alpha stepped forward.
His gaze remained fixed on me.
Then he bowed his head.
"Congratulations, Alpha Draven."
The others quickly followed.
One after another.
They weren't congratulating him on becoming stronger.
They were acknowledging me.
For the first time in eighteen years...
No one looked at me as an unwanted omega.
They looked at me with respect.
And standing at the edge of the crowd...
Hidden behind the trees...
Kaiden watched it all unfold.
His fists clenched.
His wolf howled in anguish.
Because the woman he had publicly rejected...
Was now being welcomed by the most powerful pack in the region.
And there was nothing he could do to change it.
