Chapter Fifty-Seven: The Eclipse Guardian
Elara's POV
The training grounds slowly emptied.
The warriors returned to their duties, but I noticed something different.
They looked at me differently now.
Not with fear.
Not with pity.
With respect.
It felt... strange.
For so long, I had been invisible.
Now everyone seemed to know my name.
Lunara smiled.
"You've earned it."
Vespera nodded.
"Not because of your power."
"Because of your heart."
---
The Keeper remained standing in the center of the arena.
His silver and crimson eyes never left me.
"Walk with me."
I glanced toward my family.
King Cassian nodded.
"You'll be safe."
Alpha Alaric smiled.
"Listen carefully."
"He's forgotten more than most of us will ever know."
Draven stepped beside me.
"I'll come too."
The Keeper smiled.
"No."
Draven frowned.
"No?"
"There are lessons she must hear alone."
Draven looked at me.
"If you want me to stay..."
I smiled softly.
"I'll be okay."
He gently squeezed my hand.
"I know."
Orion spoke through our mate bond.
"We'll be waiting."
Lunara answered warmly.
"Thank you."
It was the first time Orion and Lunara had spoken directly.
The bond between them was growing.
---
The Keeper led me deep into the forest.
The farther we walked...
The quieter everything became.
Eventually we reached a peaceful lake surrounded by ancient white trees.
The water reflected the morning sky perfectly.
No wind disturbed its surface.
"It is beautiful."
The Keeper nodded.
"This place existed before wolves."
"Before vampires."
"Before kingdoms."
I looked around in amazement.
"What is it?"
He smiled.
"The Lake of Reflection."
He pointed toward the still water.
"It reveals truth."
---
He motioned for me to kneel.
I did.
"Close your eyes."
I obeyed.
"Call to Lunara."
"I'm here."
"Now Vespera."
"Always."
The Keeper's voice remained calm.
"Do not call them separately."
"Call yourselves."
Confused, I frowned.
"What?"
"You still think of yourself as three."
He gently tapped my chest.
"You are one."
His words settled deep inside me.
I took a slow breath.
"I am Elara."
"I am Lunara."
"I am Vespera."
"We are one soul."
The lake began glowing.
Silver ripples spread across the water.
Crimson light answered from beneath the surface.
The two colors slowly merged.
The Keeper smiled proudly.
"Better."
---
Suddenly...
The lake became completely black.
A violent headache struck me.
I gasped.
Images flooded my mind.
An enormous throne room.
A silver crown.
A black crown.
Two figures standing together beneath an eclipse.
One wore armor of moonlight.
The other carried a sword burning with crimson fire.
I couldn't see their faces.
Only their hands.
Clasped together.
Then...
Everything changed.
The throne room burned.
Bodies covered the floor.
A woman's scream echoed through the darkness.
A baby cried.
Then...
The silver-masked man.
Holding a black spear.
The vision shattered.
I fell forward onto my hands.
Breathing hard.
"What..."
"What was that?"
The Keeper helped me stand.
"A memory."
"My memory?"
He shook his head.
"No."
"The Eclipse's."
I stared at him.
"The Eclipse remembers every generation."
---
He walked to the edge of the lake.
"For centuries..."
"The Eclipse protected balance."
"It never chose wolves."
"It never chose vampires."
"It chose both."
He looked back at me.
"That is why you exist."
"Not to rule."
"But to unite."
Lunara nodded proudly.
"Mother believed that."
Vespera smiled.
"Father too."
---
The Keeper suddenly became serious.
"There is one thing you must never do."
I looked at him.
"What?"
"Never force the Eclipse."
"It is alive."
"If you command it..."
"It will consume you."
"But if you trust it..."
"It will protect you."
I remembered collapsing after the battle.
"I forced it."
"You did."
"And it nearly killed you."
I lowered my head.
"I'm sorry."
He smiled kindly.
"That is why we train."
---
Suddenly...
A howl echoed through the forest.
Not a warning.
A desperate cry.
I immediately recognized the voice.
Orion.
Draven.
I looked toward the castle.
"Something's wrong."
The Keeper's expression darkened.
"Go."
I didn't hesitate.
Silver and crimson energy surged around my feet.
Without thinking...
I ran.
The trees became blurs.
The wind rushed past me.
I had never moved this fast before.
Not even during the battle.
The Keeper watched me disappear through the forest.
A small smile crossed his face.
"Excellent."
"The Eclipse is beginning to trust her."
---
Back at Shadowmoon Castle...
Draven stood in the courtyard with Alpha Alaric and King Cassian.
All three looked toward the forest.
A young scout dropped to one knee.
"Alpha!"
"What happened?" Draven demanded.
The scout struggled to catch his breath.
"We found tracks."
"Whose tracks?"
The scout swallowed.
"There were three prisoners."
He looked directly at King Cassian.
"One escaped."
Cassian frowned.
"And the others?"
"The Hollow Court took them."
Draven's expression hardened.
"Who escaped?"
The scout answered.
"A young wolf."
"He identified himself as..."
The gates burst open.
A battered young man stumbled into the courtyard.
Bruised.
Bloody.
Barely able to stand.
He lifted his head.
His eyes searched desperately through the crowd.
Then...
They found me as I ran into the courtyard.
His voice cracked.
"Elara..."
I froze.
My heart skipped.
"Kaiden?"
The entire courtyard fell silent.
