Chapter 15 Dead

537 Words
He throws Genevieve onto the couch. Genevieve gasps for air, then holds her belly: "Edward, my belly hurts so much." I don't miss the smile that flashes across her face. "Daddy, she's lying again," I tell Daddy. Daddy just looks at her cold, like she's not the precious one anymore. His look reminds me of before. Before, he was so good to Mommy. I once asked Mommy why she loved Daddy. Mommy said Daddy had been a light in her life, pulled her out of the dark. I didn't understand, but I knew dark was scary. That's why I wanted to sleep with Mommy every night. Later, I asked Mommy more about it. She told me her own parents hadn't loved her. So for years she was hungry, cold. And she had to do so many things, and people bullied her. Daddy got her out of that place, took her to school, made her life different. She said she loved Daddy, and was grateful to him. Hearing this, I just held Mommy, my heart aching. I decided to love Daddy a little more. Not blame him for not being around. And back then I didn't know what being hungry felt like, but later I found out. Thinking about this, I remember the stale bagel and the candle I ate. I rub my little belly, suddenly laugh out loud. Maybe being dead has its good points. No more hunger. No more leg pain. I look back at Daddy. Daddy doesn't seem to care about Genevieve's cries, sits across from her, cold: "Okay, are you done pretending?" Hearing this, Genevieve stops for a few seconds, then says pitifully: "Edward, having a baby is hard work. You don't want me to lose it, do you?" Her words make Daddy's face worse, but he doesn't do anything. For the first time, Edward wonders — does he really want this baby that much? In his mind, the daughter he didn't like pops up. But thinking she's dead, his heart jumps. He pushes the feeling down, looks at Genevieve: "Protect that baby. It's your only chance." Then Daddy leaves the estate. I think he's going home, forget all the bad stuff, follow him happy. "Emma's going home to see Mommy!" But when his car leaves the estate gates, I realize something's wrong. "Daddy, what are you doing? Mommy's still at home!" Even knowing Mommy is dead, seeing her would be good. "Daddy, where are you going?" The car drives farther and farther. Until it's on a parkway with no one around. He slows down, then stops. I think Daddy took a wrong turn, want to tell him home is the other way. But then I hear Daddy say: "Vivienne, I'm coming to find you." My eyes light up: "Daddy, you know where Mommy is!" "Emma wants to find Mommy too!" The car starts the second he finishes. So fast I almost get thrown. The car gets faster and faster, and Daddy's face has a crazy look. "Daddy..." I call him. Suddenly, I think of something. Mommy's dead. If Daddy wants to find her, he has to die too. "Daddy, no!" Realizing this, I yell. The car keeps going, and ahead is the cliff.
