Maryk returned to the councilor"s house on the mountain. Rose"s scent lingered in the air like a whisper. He inhaled deeply, needing to have this connection—however small it was—to her. Then he swept down the road, following the trail. With each beat of his wings, her perfume grew stronger. He was getting close. He"d find her soon. At the base of the mountain, instead of turning left to head into Montrose, her tracks led him to the right. Toward human lands. His heart thundered in his chest. It was true. She was leaving him. Leaving them both. Crimson bled over his vision and his chest constricted. Screams… from somewhere inside his head… ripped at him. It was coming. That loss of control. That desperation. That… madness. He forced the crimson fury down. He couldn"t let it take him. N
