A World He Wants to Forget

1209 Words
The next two years passed quickly. Daniel completed his studies with distinction and graduated at the top of his class. On graduation day, hundreds of proud families filled the university auditorium. Parents cheered. Cameras flashed. Students celebrated. It was supposed to be one of the happiest days of Grace’s life. And yet, as she sat quietly in the back row wearing her simplest dress, she felt strangely out of place. The people around her wore expensive clothes. Jewelry sparkled under the bright lights. Luxury cars filled the parking lot outside. Grace noticed the difference immediately. But she wasn’t there for them. She was there for her son. The boy she had raised alone. The boy she had fed when she herself was hungry. The boy she had sacrificed everything for. When Daniel’s name was announced as one of the top graduates, tears flooded her eyes. She stood and applauded louder than anyone. “My son,” she whispered proudly. For a brief moment, Daniel looked into the crowd. Their eyes met. Grace smiled. Daniel smiled back. But then he quickly turned away. It was such a small moment that Grace barely noticed. Yet something inside Daniel had changed. And that change was becoming harder to hide. ⸻ After graduation, Daniel received several job offers. The most prestigious came from Harrison Global Holdings, one of the largest business firms in Lagos. The salary was beyond anything he had imagined. The opportunity was extraordinary. Grace cried with joy when he told her. “We did it, Mama.” “No,” she corrected him softly. “You did it.” Daniel shook his head. “You got me here.” Grace smiled. At that moment, everything still felt possible. At that moment, she still believed their bond could never be broken. ⸻ Within a year, Daniel’s career exploded. His intelligence, confidence, and determination impressed everyone around him. He was promoted twice. His income increased dramatically. He moved into a luxury apartment. He began attending exclusive business events. His social circle changed. The people around him changed. Even his habits changed. The young man who once shared a single meal with his mother was now dining in five-star restaurants. The boy who once dreamed of helping his mother was becoming a man consumed by success. ⸻ Sophia remained by his side through it all. Their relationship grew stronger. Soon they became one of the city’s most admired couples. Sophia’s wealthy family approved of Daniel. They admired his ambition. His achievements. His potential. But there was one topic Daniel avoided whenever possible. His past. Whenever conversations drifted toward his childhood, he became uncomfortable. Whenever people asked about his family, his answers became shorter. Vaguer. More distant. Slowly, he began editing parts of his story. Not outright lies. Just omissions. Details left unsaid. The poverty. The hunger. The tiny apartment. His mother’s sacrifices. The things that no longer seemed to fit the image he wanted the world to see. ⸻ Meanwhile, Grace’s life remained much the same. She still worked long hours. She still lived in a small room. She still counted every naira carefully. The difference was that now she expected things to improve. After all, Daniel was successful. She wasn’t asking for luxury. She didn’t want expensive gifts. She only wanted time. Phone calls. Visits. Conversations. But those became increasingly rare. Weeks sometimes passed without hearing his voice. Whenever she called, Daniel sounded distracted. Busy. Rushed. “Sorry, Mama, I’m in a meeting.” “Sorry, Mama, I’ll call later.” “Sorry, Mama, things are hectic.” Grace always understood. Or at least she pretended to. After hanging up, she would sit quietly for hours staring at old photographs. Photographs of a smiling little boy who once promised he would never forget her. ⸻ One Sunday, Grace became ill at work. The dizziness came suddenly. Her vision blurred. Before she knew it, she collapsed. Fortunately, her coworkers helped her. A doctor later informed her that stress, exhaustion, and years of overwork were taking a serious toll on her health. “You need rest,” the doctor said. Grace laughed softly. “Rest costs money.” The doctor frowned. “I’m serious.” “So am I.” Without work, she couldn’t survive. Without work, she couldn’t pay rent. Without work, she couldn’t eat. So she returned to work the very next day. And told no one. Especially not Daniel. She didn’t want to burden him. ⸻ Months later, Sophia invited Daniel to a formal dinner hosted by her parents. It was one of the most important evenings of his life. Business leaders. Politicians. Investors. Influential families. Everyone would be there. Daniel spent days preparing. The event represented another step toward the future he wanted. A future of wealth. Status. Power. A future far removed from the one he came from. During dinner, Sophia’s father raised an interesting question. “So, Daniel.” The table became quiet. “When can we meet your mother?” Daniel froze. For a second, panic flashed across his face. He recovered quickly. “Soon.” Sophia smiled. “I’d love that.” Her father nodded. “Family is important.” Daniel forced a smile. “Of course.” But inside, conflicting emotions battled for control. He loved his mother. Or at least he believed he did. Yet the thought of bringing her into this world made him uncomfortable. He imagined her simple clothes. Her rough hands. Her modest way of speaking. And for the first time, a terrible thought crossed his mind. What if she embarrasses me? The thought shocked him. But it was there. And once such thoughts appear, they rarely disappear easily. ⸻ That night, Daniel couldn’t sleep. He remembered childhood memories. His mother carrying heavy bags. His mother skipping meals. His mother working endless hours. His mother selling her precious jewelry to keep him in school. The memories hurt. Not because he regretted them. But because they reminded him of where he came from. And he was becoming desperate to leave that past behind. ⸻ A few days later, Grace called him. Her voice sounded weak. “Hello, Daniel.” “Mama.” “How are you?” “I’m fine.” They spoke briefly. Then Grace asked a simple question. “When are you coming home?” Silence. Daniel looked at his busy schedule. Meetings. Events. Travel. Sophia. Business opportunities. The truth was he could make time if he wanted. But he didn’t. Not lately. “I’m very busy.” Grace smiled sadly, though he couldn’t see it. “I understand.” “I’ll visit soon.” “Okay.” After the call ended, Grace sat alone in her room. The loneliness felt heavier than ever. For the first time, she wondered whether success had taken her son away from her. ⸻ Across the city, Daniel stood by the window of his luxury apartment. The skyline glittered beneath the night sky. Everything he had once dreamed about was becoming reality. Money. Success. Recognition. Respect. Yet deep inside, something felt wrong. Something felt unfinished. A voice whispered quietly within him. A voice reminding him of promises he once made. Promises he was beginning to forget. Promises to a mother who never forgot hers.
