Chapter Twelve – The Covenant of Darkness
The underworld stretched endlessly, an abyss of burning caverns, rivers of molten ash, and towers carved from obsidian stone. Shadows moved on their own, slithering across the jagged walls like living things. It was a place where time stood still, and screams of tortured souls echoed endlessly through the dark halls.
At the heart of this realm sat the Dark One, a towering figure cloaked in fire and mist, his eyes two glowing embers that swallowed light itself. Around him were legions of demon soldiers, armored in black steel, their claws sharp enough to slice stone, their wings carrying the stench of death. They marched in circles, sharpening their weapons, waiting for the command to unleash terror upon the earth.
And standing before this throne of shadows… was Mr. Jason.
But he was no longer the man Annie once called “Father.” His once gentle face was gaunt, his skin pale with streaks of black crawling across his veins. His eyes glowed faintly red, a sign that the dark corruption was consuming him. Each day, his body twisted more, his humanity slipping away as the darkness seeped deeper.
He knelt before the Dark One, his voice trembling yet firm.
“Master… I have done all you commanded. Annie is walking into your trap. Soon, the Kamalar’s light will be extinguished.”
The Dark One leaned forward, his voice like rolling thunder, shaking the black pillars of the underworld.
“Do not underestimate her, Jason. The Kamalar cannot be destroyed by fear or steel. She must be broken. Her spirit must be shattered.”
Jason lowered his head, but within him a storm raged. His lips trembled as he whispered, almost to himself, “Annie… forgive me.”
But the Dark One heard. His laugh was sharp and cruel.
“Your daughter no longer belongs to you. She belongs to me. And when she comes, she will fall just as you have.”
The ground split open, rivers of lava surged, and more demons rose from the pits, shrieking and wielding fiery blades. The army stretched as far as Jason’s eyes could see a storm of darkness preparing for war.
The Dark One’s voice thundered again:
“When the time comes, you will lead them, Jason. You will bring me your daughter’s light… and deliver her to eternal night.”
Jason bowed, a single tear sliding down his cheek. The tear sizzled and vanished into smoke before it could touch the ground. His humanity was dying, but deep within, a small flicker of love for Annie still burned.
Far away, in the realm of men, Mr. John had heard whispers of what was spoken in the underworld. A message carried on the winds of the spirit world reached him: Jason has fallen… the Dark One prepares for war.
John wasted no time. He rushed to Mrs. Abby, who listened with grave silence, and together they went to Mrs. Kalie, the stepmother who had once been cruel but was now bound to the Shadow Hunters’ cause. Their faces grew pale at the news but hope returned when Annie and Daniel arrived.
The room froze. All eyes fell on Daniel as the truth unfolded. The prophecy had spoken: for every Kamalar, there is always a Humayan. And Daniel… was the Humayan.
Gasps filled the air. Mrs. Kalie’s lips trembled. Mrs. Abby’s eyes widened in awe. Even the hardened Shadow Hunters bowed their heads.
Daniel stood tall, his eyes glowing with the spark of the Humayan’s power. And then, across the room, he saw a familiar face.
“Joshua…” Daniel whispered.
His younger brother stepped forward, his face filled with tears. They embraced tightly, a reunion long delayed, a bond reforged in the face of darkness.
For the first time in many years, laughter and hope filled the air. Annie’s presence lit the room. Daniel’s power shook the hearts of the hunters. Mrs. Abby lifted her hands and declared, “The Dark One’s reign is drawing to an end. His shadows will not prevail against this light.”
Every heart present believed it.
The days of the Dark One were numbered.
And in the silence after their rejoicing, thunder rumbled across the skies as if heaven itself was preparing for the final battle.
