Chapter Five – When the Shadows Follow
The next morning, Annie’s heart thudded as she saw Daniel and Joshua arrive at the gate. She stayed near the stairs, bottle safely in her room, while the tension in the house thickened.
Mrs. Kalie’s eyes immediately locked onto the boys. Her voice cut through the air, sharp and commanding. “Get out of my house. Nowww!”
Clara, quick to act, moved closer to her mother and whispered something softly in her ear. She glanced at Daniel and Joshua with pleading eyes. “Please, Mom…”
For a tense moment, Mrs. Kalie’s gaze flickered between her daughter and the two young men. With a hiss of irritation but no other choice, she stepped aside and left the room, leaving Clara triumphant and Daniel and Joshua inside with Annie.
Clara immediately focused her attention on Joshua. He smiled politely and played along, keeping her occupied and preventing her from following Annie and Daniel.
Annie took Daniel quietly to her room. She held the bottle carefully in her hands and showed it to him. Its surface shimmered faintly, glowing with otherworldly energy. Strange symbols and incantations twisted along the glass, forming and fading as if alive.
Daniel leaned closer, eyes widening. “I’ve never seen anything like this,” he murmured. “It’s… responding to something… or someone. Annie, this isn’t ordinary.”
Annie nodded but didn’t tell anyone else about the bottle. It was their secret. She felt the shadows moving silently around the house dark shapes twisting along walls, slipping under doors, and flickering in mirrors but she only shared this knowledge with Daniel.
After some time, they quietly left her room and went to Mr. Jason’s room, where he was awake, sitting up with his swollen leg propped on pillows. His face was pale, but his eyes were alert.
“Daniel… I know you,” Mr. Jason said quietly, recognition in his voice. “You are Annie’s boyfriend right?”
“Yes, sir,” Daniel replied respectfully. “We’re here greet you sir , sorry about your leg .”
Annie stayed beside Daniel, thanks boy Mr Jason replied Mr. Jason’s gaze softened, then furrowed with unease. “I felt… like someone pushed me on the stairs,” he said, voice low. “It felt the same way your mother… years ago. According to the autopsy, she was pushed. Something is wrong.”
Daniel and Annie nodded seriously, unaware of the shadows creeping silently through the house. Only Annie could see them, twisting along walls and pooling in corners, always watching.
By mid-afternoon, Daniel and Joshua prepared to leave, promising Annie they would continue searching for answers. “We’ll find a way,” Daniel said softly, resting a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “You’re not alone.”
Annie watched them go, clutching the bottle tightly. Around her, the shadows moved silently, stretching across every room. She whispered almost to herself, “I will survive. I will not let them win.”
The darkness was patient, waiting for the night when Annie would have no choice but to confront it.
